Sony Xperia Z tablet and LG Optimus Pro G phone unveiled
News from BBC News:

Sony’s new tablet shares the water resistant facility offered by its flagship handset

Sony has unveiled what it says is the thinnest tablet computer of its kind.

The Android-powered Xperia Z is 0.27in (6.9mm)-thick. That is 0.01in thinner than Apple’s iPad Mini despite featuring a bigger 10.1in screen.

It coincides with news that LG is releasing a 5in handset – the Optimus G Pro – making it the latest to offer the so-called “phablet” form factor.

Both devices have only been confirmed for release in Japan, but more details are expected next month.

Mobile World Congress is being held in Barcelona from 25 to 28 February and is a popular time to announce global launches of new smart devices.

Samsung has already said it would show off a new 8in version of its Galaxy Note tablet family at the event.

Beyond being thin, Sony’s new tablet can also lay claim to being the lightest for its size.

LG May Release Windows Phone 8 Device in 2013
News from Eastern Morning Herald:

LG’s recent flagships and pseudo-flagships have all been Android-powered devices – the Optimus G, the Nexus 4, and even slightly older phones such as the Optimus Vu. With the Optimus G and Nexus 4 currently enjoying a great deal of success and a lot of press coverage, it would stand to reason that LG would have no need for Windows Phone at this point.

However, a new rumor suggests that LG is working on a handset that would see the Korean company make a return to Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system.

Despite releasing the Windows Phone 7-powered Optimus 7 and Optimus 7Q in 2010, LG wasn’t one of the OEMs selected by Microsoft to release its first batch of Windows Phone 8 handsets. Now, times may be changing, according to the Korea Times. The report quoted an unnamed LG executive in saying that LG “will release quite a number of new Optimus devices this year”, with some of these new smartphones to run on Windows Phone 8 and not Android.

This is the same source that had suggested that LG will be unveiling a…………… continues on Eastern Morning Herald

LG’s 5.5 inch 1080p flagship phone, the Optimus G2, will be unveiled at CES
News from Android Authority:

Yesterday we filed a report saying LG’s 5.5 inch 1080p flagship phone for 2013 was going to be announced at Mobile World Congress in February and that it would start shipping during the same month. That rumor came from a Korean website called ETNews. Today, courtesy of DigiTimes, we have some more rumors about this device. They say it’s going to be called the Optimus G2, it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Prime MSM8974, and most importantly, they say it’s going to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show next week.

The story goes on, saying that Sony will announce the Xperia Z on January 7th, and that said phone will have the same specs as HTC’s Butterfly/DNA, except it’ll feature a better camera. Huawei will show off the D2, which uses the company’s own quad core chip, and a 6.1 inch tablet device called the Ascend Mate. We already know quite a bit about the Mate, but we…………… continues on Android Authority

LG Said to Make New Google Nexus Phone to Be Unveiled This Month
News from Businessweek:

LG Electronics Inc. (066570) is developing a Nexus smartphone for Google (GOOG) Inc., becoming the third manufacturer to build phones for the U.S. company, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

The device, to be shown this month, is based on LG’s Optimus G model, said the person, who declined to be identified because the project isn’t public.

For LG, its first Nexus project would deepen a partnership with Google as the Seoul-based company tries to compete with Samsung Electronics Co. Google has previously developed phones with Samsung and HTC Corp. (2498) to help maintain the dominance of its mobile operating system against Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone.

Jinny Lee, a Seoul-based spokeswoman for LG, and Shari Yoder Doherty, a spokeswoman for Google, declined to comment.

Why is LG such a failure in the mobile phone business and can they turn things …
News from Unwired View:

LG is a company that I love to beat up, not because they don’t have any talented engineers, but because they consistently fail to make full use of resources that they have. The company’s business strategy, as far as I and the rest of the world can tell, is to clone everything Samsung makes as quickly as humanly possible and hope for the best. The most recent example of this type of behavior is the LG Vu, a 5 inch 4:3 smartphone/tablet hybrid with a stylus that was clearly inspired by the Galaxy Note.

Forgetting about specific phone models for a second, let’s talk about some hard data. At the end of the first quarter of 2012, LG lost their position as the fourth largest handset maker to…………… continues on Unwired View

Mystery LG Windows Phone smiles for the camera, may be unveiled next week
News from Unwired View:

So far, LG has been notably absent from the Windows Phone Mango area of the smartphone space. The only exception being the oddly-named Jil Sander Mobile, which was just a redesigned Optimus 7 from yesteryear anyway.

But that will soon change, it seems. The Korean company may launch two new Windows Phones in the near future. One of them will be the Fantasy, leaked last month, and the other may be this little puppy over here:

LG Optimus Sol ‘affordable 1 GHz Android’ finally unveiled

LG Optimus Sol ‘affordable 1 GHz Android’ finally unveiled
News from TechRadar UK:

LG has finally taken the wraps off its poorly-hidden Optimus Sol, complete with Android 2.3.

If the news of the Korean giant actually managing to bring a handset to market with the latest version of Android isn’t enough to get you busting out the early morning bubbly (we know you all have it) then get this: it’s got an OLED screen too.

That’s right – LG has finally brought a phone out using the next-gen screen technology, despite proclaiming less than a month ago that “OLED displays are not suitable in terms of picture quality, response time, energy consumption and contrast ratios”.

Anyway – onto the good stuff: the LG Optimus Sol is being touted as one of the cheapest phones with 1GHz processor around, so it will be interesting to see how much it will cost when its gets its September UK release date.

ET Review: LG Optimus 3D P920 with eye-popping visuals
News from Economic Times:
NEW DELHI: For some people, 3D is just a gimmick that is worth little more than the odd look. It definitely has no place on a mobile phone. LG, however, thinks differently. The new Optimus 3D is not really the first 3D phone – the Spice M-67 offered 3D without glasses almost a year ago -but it certainly is the most muscular handheld device we have seen offering 3D. It is bulky (11.9mm thick) and at a hefty 168 grams, is not the lightest phone in town. Although built mainly of plastic, it feels solid to hold.

The front is dominated by the large 4.3 inch display with four touch keys for menu, home, back and search. On the left side are HDMI and micro USB ports and on the right is the volume rocker and a key which many might assume is a camera key, but is actually the key that lets in the 3D magic. A 3.5 mm audio jack and the screen/power on-off button are on the top of the phone. On the back is the dual 5.0-megapixel camera module with a single LED flash.

Hit that 3D button and y…………… continues on Economic Times
