OMG! Texting pays big 4 Rhinelander teen
News from Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Texting. An annoying (when someone else is doing it) and sometimes dangerous habit? Or a way to pay for college and impress your friends?

For Austin Wierschke, it turned out to be the latter. The Rhinelander 17-year-old has won the LG U.S. National Texting Championship two years in a row, each time taking home $ 50,000.

“I was watching MTV one day, and I saw an ad for the competition and that’s how I entered,” Austin told me. We had an old-school telephone conversation rather than texting.

The annual contest, which began in 2007, draws more than 500,000 entries, according to sponsor LG Electronics. The speedy texters are narrowed down at various tiers of the competition over a few months until the elite dozen finalists are invited to New York for the championship. Austin won last year and again this month, making him the Michael Phelps of texting and the only repeat winner.

“I’m actually not too sure what makes my thumbs abnormally fast,” he said. “People would notice it and say, ‘Why are you so fast at texting?’ I’d be like, ‘I don’t know. Why aren’t you?’ “

Young people in particular seem to be texting always and everywhere. Math and reading scores aren’t that great in this country, but texting competence is off the charts.

“I think any teenager I would talk to from my high school, they charge their phone at night and they unp…………… continues on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

LG hits 5 million LTE smartphones sold
News from DigitalJournal.com:

South Korean phone manufacturer, LG has announced this evening that it has sold 5 million LTE handsets worldwide. Over 1 million handsets were sold in July alone.

LG’s wildly popular Optimus LTE phone was the most popular of LG’s line, with just over 2 million units sold.

LG currently sells more than 10 LTE devices across several markets, including Japan, US, Europe and Asia. Company executives optimistically expect its growth rate to continue to increase.

LG’s Mobile Communications CEO Jong-seok Park was quoted saying:

“Sales of global LTE smartphones are expected to increase ten-fold this year from last year. With that in mind, we are planning to introduce an even more impressive LTE lineup in the next several months second to none.”

Gartner is currently reporting that LG is number 5 in smartphone sales, holding a 3.4 percent marketshare in the second quarter of 2012.

LG Optimus L7: iPrimus Gets First Aussie Dibs
News from Lifehacker Australia:

We’ve known that LG’s Optimus L7 phone was coming to Australia since Mobile World Congress back in February. Somewhat surprisingly, the first carrier to officially announce LG’s 4.3-inch Ice Cream Sandwich phone isn’t one of the big three telcos, but internet service provider iPrimus.

iPrimus is offering the Optimus L7 on its $ 39 ‘No Worries’ plan, which offers unlimited Australian calls and texts and 2GB data a month over a 24-month contract. iPrimus uses the Optus network, and includes that network’s usual “no data charges for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and even MySpace” option. That’s a reasonable deal, though it’s worth noting that since Mobicity already has the L7 on offer unlocked for $ 259, you could easily sign up for a month-to-month plan with a more generous data offering and not be tied down for two years.

Fast-fingered Clermont teen to compete in texting championship in New York
News from Orlando Sentinel:

4:14 p.m. EST, August 6, 2012|By Jon Busdeker, Orlando Sentinel

While texting, Clermont teen Olivia Fagan can type three letters per second.

Just how fast is that? During a text-off with a Sentinel reporter, Olivia, 16, finished the familiar phrase “The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog,” which uses every letter of the alphabet, in a little more than seven seconds.

The slow-fingered Sentinel reporter made it to the word “fox.”

This week, Olivia, 16, and her nimble digits will be in New York City to compete in the sixth annual U.S. National Texting Championship, sponsored by phone maker LG. She’s one of 11 contestants — and the only one from Florida — who will face off Wednesday in a series of texting challenges that test speed, accuracy and dexterity to determine the fastest thumbs in the land.

“It’s really just one way to pay homage to the texters out there,” said LG representative Carl Brown.

He couldn’t talk about the different events at this year’s finals, but in previous years, participants were put through a…………… continues on Orlando Sentinel

HTC rumored to launch 5″ phone with 1080p display
News from Android Community:

With both Samsung and LG already having smartphones with screens large enough to be considered “phablets” it is time for HTC to join them. New reports today from DigiTimes states they are working on just that. A 5-inch smartphone with a competition beating 1080p resolution display and more.

With Samsung getting ready to announce their new Galaxy Note 2 at the end of August, aiming for a September/October launch. Now we are hearing HTC wants to crash their party, and the next iPhone by launching their own impressive 5-inch smartphone. Rumor has it that HTC’s prepared a 5-inch 1920 x 1080p resolution screen. However, it’s being reported at 1794 x 1080 leading us to believe it will feature all on-screen navigation buttons and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Pair a 5-inch screen with a resolution the bests every current smartphone with Qualcomm’s new quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor and you’ll have a real winner here. Hopefully that is what HTC is aiming for. Their tablet market has been lacking, but hopefully this…………… continues on Android Community
