LG posts a small profit for 2012, phone division doing okay
News from GSMArena.com:

LG announced its financial results for the final quarter of 2012 and for the full year. The company ended up with a small net profit, due to a big fine from the European Commission over the CRT price fixing scandal.

That aside, the company saw its full year revenue drop 6% year over year, but operating profit went from $ 342 million in 2011 to $ 1.01 billion in 2012. However, net profit was only $ 80.8 million as LG was fined €295 million (around $ 400 million), which accounts for a lot of the difference.

Anyway, LG’s phone business brought in $ 2.58 billion in revenues in Q4 2012, up both year over year and quarter on quarter. During that quarter, LG shipped 15.4 million phones, over half of which were smartphones.

Demand for LTE-enabled smartphones (like the Optimus G and Optimus Vu II) and 3G smartphones (like the Nexus 4 and the L Series phones) was strong. In fact, with LTE networks launching in more and more markets (especially Europe), LG plans to focus on LTE-capable phones and launch a successor to the Optimus G, the L Series and start a new F series of mass market LTE-enabled phones.

LG’s mobile division saw a decrease in revenue for the full year 2012, but the operating profit was in the black (the division posted an operating loss in 2011).

The TV business did very well– it posted record sales of 9.3 million uni…………… continues on GSMArena.com

News from PC Magazine:

By Alex Colon

Most people look to MetroPCS for a good deal, and you’re not going to find a better one than the $ 199 LG Spirit 4G. It’s a fast, powerful phone, with a thin design and a killer price tag. It isn’t quite as good as the Samsung Galaxy S III, but it also costs less than half the price. It’s the best deal you can get on a MetroPCS LTE smartphone right now.

LG Electronics Posts 3rd-Quarter Profit on Phone Earnings
News from Businessweek:

LG Electronics Inc. (066570), South Korea’s second-largest mobile-phone maker, returned to profit in the third quarter on earnings from handset sales.

Net income was 157.1 billion won in the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with a loss of 413.9 billion won a year earlier, Seoul-based LG said in a statement today. The average of 22 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg was for a profit of 158.6 billion won.

The company is counting on its Optimus line of smartphones running Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system to compete with Apple Inc.’s iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy devices, while cutting production of cheaper basic phones. LG also seeks to capitalize on demand for computer-like TVs and other appliances to fuel growth.

“They are improving,” Lim Dori, a Seoul-based analyst at Shinyoung Securities Co., said by phone before today’s announcement. “The handset business is steadily getting back on track. In home appliances, LG is competitive, widening their lead over smaller rivals.”

Galaxy phones drive Samsung to record profit again
News from San Francisco Chronicle:

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Samsung, the world’s largest technology firm by revenue, reported another record-high quarterly profit as customers flocked to Galaxy smartphones amid the absence of competitors, which helped the South Korean firm outdo rivals even at one of the most challenging times for the global tech industry.

Samsung Electronics Co. said Friday its net profit reached a record-high of 5.2 trillion won ($ 4.5 billion) in the three months ending in June, a 48 percent jump from a year earlier.

But the bottom line was lower than a median market consensus of 5.6 trillion won based on a poll of seven analysts by Yonhap Infomax.

Its second-quarter operating profit spiked 79 percent over a year earlier to 6.7 trillion won and its revenue rose 21 percent to 47.6 trillion won, matching Samsung’s guidance released earli…………… continues on San Francisco Chronicle

LG sells 13.1m phones in Q2 ’12, 44% were smartphones
News from SlashGear:

We know you’re excited about all these financial results, so we’ll just keep them coming. LG has managed a healthy profit overall for the second quarter, up 46% compared to the same period last year, but its cellphone business took a hit. That caused an overall decline in revenues too compared to last year, down by 10.6% to $ 11.16 billion. LG’s cellphone business may not be looking good, but its home entertainment section is looking better than ever.

LG sold 13.1 million phones worldwide in the second quarter, with 44% of those being smartphones, up from 36% last quarter thanks to strong LTE handset deployment. Revenues were down 27.5% year-on-year at $ 2.01 billion, resulting in a loss of $ 49.48 million for that section of the company. LG notes that it plans to rollout further LTE-enabled phones in the second half of the year across the United States and Europe that should bolster its smartphone numbers.

The other part of LG that helped offset the loss in the cellphone division was Home Appliances. Revenues increased to $ 2.50 billion, resulting in a third fold increase in profit to $ 143.23 million. That’s all thanks to a dive…………… continues on SlashGear

* TV division profit more than doubled to 216 bln won

* Cellphone division swings to a 59 bln won loss

* Shares end down 2.1 pct, underperform wider market

By Miyoung Kim

SEOUL, July 25 (Reuters) – LG Electronics Inc, the world’s No.2 TV maker, said on Wednesday quarterly profit more than doubled on a jump in TV sales but its cellphone business swung to a worrying loss, squeezed by growing competition from Apple and Samsung as well as low-cost producers in China.

Its cellphone division, which accounts for around one-fifth of sales and has drawn comparisons with struggling rivals like Nokia, faces further uphill battles with a widely expected launch of a new iPhone from Apple and robust sales for Samsung’s new Galaxy smartphone.

“LG’s mobile phone business will remain its biggest concern — under the most optimistic scenario, it will probably only make a very small profit for the current quarter,” said Kevin Lee, an analy…………… continues on Reuters

LG has been turning a corner of late, getting its mobile division out of a six-quarter-long rut.

Today’s Q2 report outlines a 46 percent increase in net profits year-over-year at $ 138 million, though phone sales continue to be an obstacle.

Overall revenues went up from last quarter, but are still down from a year ago. The handset division in particular had an operating loss of $ 49.5 million, which has a lot to do with the decline in feature phone sales. Smartphone sales, on the other hand, rose to 44 percent of all units sold, which is up from Q1′s 36 percent.

It’s not expected that LG compete directly with the iPhone, but the company…………… continues on TechCrunch

Galaxy phones power Samsung to record $ 5.15 billion profit
News from Baltimore Sun:

SEOUL (Reuters) – Samsung Electronics posted a record $ 5.2 billion quarterly profit as it shifted over 20,000 Galaxy smartphones an hour in January-March, outselling Apple’s iPhone in a duel for the lucrative high end of the mobile industry.

Chairman Lee Kun-hee’s South Korean group, whose $ 190 billion market value is 11 times that of Japanese rival Sony Corp, sold 93.5 million handsets in the first quarter – more than one in every four sold around the world – according to Strategy Analytics. That included 44.5 million smartphones, giving it a 30.6 percent share of the high-end market. Apple’s sales of 35.1 million iPhones gave it a 24.1 percent share.

LG Electronics Profit Beats Estimates on TVs, Mobiles

Wednesday, April 25th, 2012

LG Electronics Profit Beats Estimates on TVs, Mobiles
News from BusinessWeek:

LG Electronics Inc. (066570), the world’s second-largest television maker, reported first-quarter profit that exceeded analyst estimates as TV and smartphone sales led earnings gains at its main businesses.

The company had net income of 242.5 billion won ($ 213 million) in the three months ended March 31, compared with a loss of 15.8 billion won a year earlier, Seoul-based LG said in a statement today. The average of 20 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg was for a profit of 181.9 billion won.

Profit at LG’s home-entertainment unit was boosted by sales of high-end TVs featuring 3-D screens and Web-based services, while new devices using Google Inc.’s Android software helped the mobile-phone business return to profit. LG is racing to introduce new smartphones and TVs to narrow the gap with Samsung Electronics Co. (005930) and recover market-share losses in mobile phones to its South Korean competitor and Apple Inc.

“The TV side is improving a lot, nearly showing the best profitability ever, as their product mix is getting better,” Kim Ji San, a Seoul-based analyst at Kiwoom Securities Co., said by phone. “Investors have been the most worried about the mobile business, but profit is widening there, as well.”

LG fell 1.3 percent to 77,700 won at the close of trading in Seoul, after rising as much as 2.3 percent, while the ben…………… continues on BusinessWeek
