Review: LG’s G Flex smartphone is a preview of the future

Review: LG’s G Flex smartphone is a preview of the future
News from Los Angeles Times:

The LG G Flex isn’t available in the United States, but it could be a preview of what’s to come in the world of smartphones.

That’s because the futuristic devices features two technologies we haven’t seen before: a curved screen and a self-healing coat.

The LG G Flex is one of the first two commercially available curved-screen smartphones. The phone’s massive 6-inch screen curves slightly from its top edge down to the bottom. If you lay it on a table, the top and bottom stick up ever so slightly.

To make the curved screen, LG used a plastic organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, technology. This kind of screen has been heavily talked about in the tech industry since late last year because of what they could mean for smartphones.

OLED screens are flexible, which means phone makers could potentially come up with new shapes and screen designs for their devices. And because OLED screens are made of plastic, these displays are supposed to be more durable than the glass smartphone screens we have today.

Watch LG’s new flexible phone heal itself after a knife scratch
News from The Verge:

When LG announced its curved smartphone, the G Flex, it boasted that the handset was coated with a “self-healing” material and even compared it to Wolverine from X-Men. LG later released a promotional video showing off the tech in action, but it’s only now that someone has put the company’s claims to the test. In YouTube personality / video producer Marques Brownlee’s hands-on with the device, he checks out the self-healing coating with a number of tests.

First up is a set of keys, which Brownlee creates some light scratches with. As you’ll see in the video, the LG G Flex essentially “heals” the scratches made. It doesn’t completely remove them, but apparently makes the marks almost invisible to the naked eye. He then carves out a deeper scratch using a knife, which “half heals,” appearing far less visible than it would on a regular phone.

Brownlee has what seems like a sound theory for why the results weren’t perfect, though. LG’s promotional clip was film…………… continues on The Verge

Preview: LG Optimus LTE2
News from ARNnet:

The LG Optimus LTE2 will initially launch in Korea next month.

The LG Optimus LTE2 is the first smartphone to include 2GB of RAM.

LG was the first smartphone manufacturer to produce a phone with a dual-core processor — the Optimus 2X — and was also first with a quad-core powered smartphone, the Optimus 4X HD. It has now switched the focus from processor to RAM with the LTE2. Obviously, the “2″ in the LTE2 name refers to its 2GB of RAM.

RAM aside, the biggest attraction of the LG Optimus LTE2 appears to be 4G LTE connectivity. LG hasn’t finalised specifications for the device, which is currently only scheduled to launch in Korea. However, if it does launch in Australia it will most definitely work on Telstra’s 1800MHz 4G LTE network.

The LG Optimus LTE2 is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. The dual-core processor includes an integrated LTE chip on board. Most users shouldn’t notice a speed difference between a dual-core smartphone and a quad-core one during r…………… continues on ARNnet

Suspects distract restaurant employee, steal cellphones
News from The Times and Democrat:

T&D Staff Report The Times and Democrat | Posted: Saturday, May 26, 2012 10:15 am |

EUTAWVILLE — Three men managed to distract an employee of China Town restaurant on Old Number Six Highway in Eutawville long enough to steal an iPhone and an LG phone on May 22.

According to Eutawville Police Chief Wesley Cook, the theft occurred around 1 p.m. The employee told Cook the trio entered the store and placed an order, then told her they didn’t have any money.

When the employee went to alert the manager in the kitchen, two of the men left the restaurant.

The remaining man asked the employee about the order he had placed, and she told him he could not get any food unless he paid for it.

He then left the store, the report said.

About an hour later, the employee realized her two cellphones were gone.

She reviewed surveillance video from the security cameras and noticed one of the men went behind the counter and grabbed the cellphones while she was in the kitchen talking to the manager.

Cook also reviewed the video, then asked around t…………… continues on The Times and Democrat

LG Optimus 3D Max
News from CNET:

In a world full of cheap gimmicks, it seems easy to slap on the 3D moniker in order to compensate for a product that isn’t up to par. (Remember that Justin Bieber movie, “Never Say Never”? Exactly.)

But in the case of the LG Optimus 3D Max, the successor to 2011′s LG Optimus 3D, the 3D feature may actually be the device’s downfall instead of its saving grace. Everything else about the handset is perfectly adequate — it has a decent 5-megapixel camera and a zippy 1.2GHz dual-core processor, and it’s NFC-enabled. Its biggest setback, however, is its 3D feature, which still has a few kinks to work out and bogs the phone down when connected to a data network.

Introduced in February at Mobile World Congress and launched about a month ago in Europe, the Optimus 3D Max is going for about $ 635 unlocked. But you won’t find the 3D Max in the States yet, and there’s no word on the carrier, pricing, or release date. So until it makes its way across the ocean, we’ll just have to get our 3D action someplace else.

Design

The LG Optimus 3D Max measures 4.99 inches tall and 2.65 inches wide. At 0.38 inch thick, it’s thinner than the o…………… continues on CNET

LG Optimus L5 Android phone (preview)
News from PC World Magazine:

LG’s Optimus L5 is the mid-range model in the company’s new L-Style range of Android phones, which focus mainly on a stylish design. Unfortunately, the Optimus L5′s display has an incredibly low resolution despite its large 4in screen size, which would make it very hard to recommend.

  • Expert Rating

  • User Rating

Pros

  • Attractive looking design
  • “Floating” screen

Cons

  • Low res screen
  • Below average specs
  • No Australian details

Bottom Line

The LG Optimus L5 may have a stylish look, but a very low screen resolution and below average specifications certainly don’t appear to do it any favours. Ultim…………… continues on PC World Magazine

LG Nitro HD 4G Phone Makes Best Display List from Experts
News from Mobile bloom News:

In a listing of the best non-iPhone displays on smartphones at CNET, the LG Nitro HD made the list with its exceptional high-def performance.  In fact, the experts at CNET even felt that the LG Nitro HD has a lot of the critical components to enable it to compete seriously with its rivals.  This is not a praise commonly heard by LG when experts speak of its handsets, making the LG Nitro HD easily one of LG’s premiere handset offerings.  It seems that LG has finally gotten into the game swinging with their new smartphone that is considered able to hang with the big boys.

News from PC World Magazine:

Is it a large smartphone or a small tablet? Officially, LG says its new Optimus Vu is a big smartphone. A very big one. With a huge 5in screen and an odd design that’s extremely wide, the Optimus Vu will go head-to-head against the Samsung Galaxy Note in 2012.

Preview: Google+ Mobile
News from InformationWeek:

BYTE — It’s bad form to roll out a new service without some kind of mobile app available. As expected, Google rolled out a mobile app with its beta of the Google+ social network — an app for the Android platform. BYTE took a long look.

Google was wise to launch this app along with its limited-use service. The service will need debugging from every direction before a mass rollout. I tried out the Android application on two different phones–a stock LG Optimus T running Android 2.2 and a rooted Motorola Cliq XT running CyanogenMod 7.0.3 (Android 2.3.3).

Excepting an issue with photos I’ll discuss below, the app ran smoothly on both phones. Here’s the main menu for the Google + app for Android. It’s clean and simple.

On launch, the app presents your choice of Stream, Huddle, Photos, Circles or User Profile — each selectable via a large icon.

The Stream view is a miniaturized version of the full website. Here you find tools at top for adding a…………… continues on InformationWeek
