Samsung building a foldable phone, LG on transparent screens

Samsung building a foldable phone, LG on transparent screens
News from GSMArena.com:

Samsung is releasing the occasional flip smartphone, but those are niche products with limited availability and appeal. A Samsung official revealed that the company has a plant to leverage its bendable display technology to create foldable phones.

The official did not provide any more info though if a foldable, flip phone like form factor can be used to provide a large screen in a compact body. While that may sound futuristic, we may see it as early as next year.

The new flexible screen tech has four phases: curved, bent, foldable and rollable. The first two are already a reality, the third one is coming soon while the last one holds promise of displays that are stored like roller blinds.

LG Display has its flexible screens too, though its focus is elsewhere – the company is experimenting with transparent displays. Those will enable augmented reality displays without the need for Google Glass style wearables.

LG already has a promotional prototype ready, however, “it will take some time” until the factories are ready for mass production. The tech is already is some products like luxury cars (for heads-up displays) and refrigerators (to let you see what’s inside while showing ads too).

Anyway, there’s one transparent display phone that we can think of, the

A higher-end LG G4 Note will launch with a metal body, not the LG G4 [RUMOR]
News from Phandroid.com:

It was a little over 2 weeks ago we got a good look at the LG G4 in a few alleged press shots of the device. Like a slightly smaller version of the LG G Flex 2, the phone featured a curved LED display while keeping to LG’s current design language. One of the more interesting parts about rumors of the device is that it would it would feature a metal body — a first for LG on their flagship line. We’re not talking about that faux metal finish of the LG G3 either.

It was an interesting prospect and while plastic definitely has its merits, consumers really seem to have taken a liking to the premium fe…………… continues on Phandroid.com

Metallic Nexus 2015 Phone On Release Date Hinted By Alleged LG G4 Note …
News from International Business Times AU:

If Google plans to go metal for its Nexus 2015 smartphone then the base-model for the device is likely the phablet LG G4 Note. Reports from South Korea indicate that the supersized phone will be wrapped in metal.

According to G4Games, pointing to Korean-language ZDNet Korea as source, LG flagships will flash premium build and designs starting on the second half of 2015. But as the upcoming LG G4 is scheduled to touchdown anytime starting April this year, the device clad in metal is essentially ruled out.

So the best candidate to become the repurposed Nexus 2015 phone, replacing the Motorola Nexus 6, is the rumoured LG phablet that for now goes by the name LG G4 Note. That is if Google will indeed renew its partnership with the South Korean firm for this year’s Nexus smartphone project.

Earlier, reports came out that Google engineers have visited manufacturing facilities owned by LG, sparking assumptions that the next Nexus will again come from the Nexus 4 and 5 maker. Prior to this suggestion, the Internet search giant was reportedly looking on the possibility of collaborating with Huawei for a China-centric Nexus device.

LG G4 to be ‘radically different,’ phone more powerful than the G series in …
News from 9 to 5 Google:

A couple reports out of Korea today highlight some of LG’s plans for the relatively near future, including a statement (via Korea Times) from the company’s mobile chief Cho Jun-ho suggesting that the upcoming LG G4 is going to be “radically different” than its predecessor. The device will reportedly feature a “metal-mixtured” body and sport the company’s LG UX 4.0, which Cho says will be announced sometime before the new phone.

Also, LG also reportedly has a completely new device series in the works (via Korea Herald), featuring more powerful specs than the current top-of-the-line G series…

As for the LG G4, it’s not just going to be aesthetically different as LG’s mobile head says that the company has interest in building some of its own internals for the device. Specifically, LG wants to no longer be dependent on Qualcomm, a leading provider of smartphone systems-on-a-chip, and has reportedly “spent millions of dollars to develop processors at its logic-chip research lab.”

Android 5.0 Lollipop Update for Samsung Galaxy S5, Note 4, LG G3, Xperia Z3 …
News from Christian Post:

By Liezl Dunuan , Christian Post Contributor

March 3, 2015|1:37 pm

Google/Twitter/Image

After Google unveiled the latest version of the Android mobile operating system Lollipop in June 2014, smartphone and tablet users on Android have been asking if and when they will get an update on their phones.

The earliest to get the updates were the Nexus devices with HTC and Motorola sometime November 2014. Google is leaving it to the phone manufacturers to schedule their releases for their own devices and several reports have come out to try and consolidate information about Lollipop updates.

One such report is found in Digital Trends, and it tries to round up updated news, tidbits and rumors about Lollipop releases on the major smartphone brands.

It starts the round up with information about Samsung phones. According to the report, Galaxy S5 owners in the US started getting the updates starting early February, for those who are on the Verizon network, which should be completed by the end of February. T-Mobile S5 owners got theirs in mid-February. For S5 owners in Europe, they will be receiving their updates soon, the schedule being dependent on how fast the networks approve the new firmware. LG G Flex 2 Is The World’s Fastest Phone, Annihilates Samsung’s Note 4 and …
News from Forbes:

On Wednesday I picked up my review sample of the LG G Flex 2. This is the second time I’ve used the phone, the first was at a pre-brief meeting in Las Vegas for CES. My initial reaction to the phone was “wow”. The reason for that was because I had used the original G Flex, and really liked it, despite it being somewhat impractical in size. But the new phone, it’s much improved, and it has far wider consumer appeal too.

But I’m not here today to fully review the phone, I need to spend longer with it first. What I have done is spend a little time with benchmarking app to see just how fast this phone is. I am, it has to be said, rather against benchmarks because I think they don’t express any real-world facts. But the G Flex 2 is the first phone with the controversial Snapdragon 810 system-on-a-chip, and I wanted to have a look into the overheating issue, and see how well it performs.

From what I’ve seen,  according to the benchmarking tools I used. In every test (with one minor 64bit hiccup) the phone beats both the Note 4 and Galaxy S5 as well as, with 3DMark, the iPhone 6.

News from LG G Flex2 review: This is what the original should have been – Engadget:

“They’re a gimmick. They’re a terrible idea. They’re not going anywhere.”

Naysayers have been doing their thing since the notion of a curved smartphone made the leap from a nutty concept to bona fide market fad, and they’re not going to stop any time soon. Neither are LG and Samsung, for that matter, who squared off in late 2013 with — what else? — a pair of curved phones. Neither the G Flex nor the Galaxy Round were critical or commercial hits, but they made great stepping stones as both companies tried to convince the world that curved phones were the next big thing. Now LG’s back for another shot at flexible-phone glory. The new

LG G Flex 2 upgrades the curved phone, but it’s on the slow side – Mashable

LG G Flex 2 upgrades the curved phone, but it’s on the slow side – Mashable
News from LG G Flex 2 upgrades the curved phone, but it’s on the slow side – Mashable:

What’s This?

It looks like curved phones are here to stay. The first curved phones debuted in 2013, a product of flexible displays and the desperation of smartphone manufacturers to differentiate. The LG G Flex was among them.

It was also a gigantic underpowered beast of a phone, and although its curved screen could turn heads, it couldn’t turn a so-so device into a good one. The curve arguably provided some advantages, but it was hard to see them through the clumsy overall experience.

Smartphones will look the same for years, says LG
News from TechRadar:

LG may have bent over backwards to bring the world flexible smartphones, but when it comes to further innovation on current form factors, the Korean manufacturer shrugs off any notion that something cool is on the immediate horizon.

TrustedReviews today published curious comments from an LG executive that shed light on why new handsets like the LG G Flex 2 might be about as cool as smartphones get for the time being.

LG Director of Corporate Communications Ken Hong summed up the dilemma by proclaiming, “I don’t think we can do much with form factor beyond this at this moment,” adding “the design of phones is restricted by the technology of our component suppliers.”

In fact, even a device like the G Flex 2 is ultimately hindered by how fast suppliers can…………… continues on TechRadar

Phone Comparisons: LG G Flex 2 vs Xiaomi Mi4 FDD-LTE
News from Android Headlines – Android News:

Do we have a good one for you today – the new LG G Flex 2 goes up against the newest revamp of the Xiaomi Mi4…the FDD-LTE model.  Both smartphones offer up a solid build quality and feel great in your hand.  The Xiaomi Mi4 uses a full metal frame and trim with a plastic back, while the LG G Flex 2 has a curved body, battery and display with an improved self-healing back.  The young Xiaomi has already overtaken Samsung as the number one brand of smartphones in China, so they will soon be a force to be reckoned with in the US when they start marketing a smartphone with all US 4G LTE channels.

These two devices do not have very much in common – they both come with 16GB of internal storage, but only the G Flex 2 has room for expansion, although Xiaomi does promise a 64GB version is coming soon.  Both main cameras use a 13MP sensor and a dual LED flash, but then they part their ways.  The batteries are almost identical in size and they both have the usual suspects of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a microUSB port for charging and data transfer, an FM Radio and IR Blaster – both LG and Xiaomi also make HDTVs.

LG will turn every new G3 phone into a VR headset, free of charge
News from Christian Science Monitor:

Care for a virtual reality headset with your new smart phone?

That’s what LG is promising. The Korean tech company is the latest to jump in on the virtual reality craze, offering customers a free VR for G3 virtual reality headset when they purchase an LG G3 smart phone. The plastic headset uses the G3 as its screen, holding the phone close to your eyes to pull off the VR effect. Though the device won’t offer too much innovation-wise, it indicates the coming surge of virtual reality headsets, led by the hype around Oculus Rift and Microsoft’s HoloLens.

The device is partly thanks to Google. The VR for G3 headset is based off downloadable DIY virtual reality head…………… continues on Christian Science Monitor

LG G2 vs LG G3: why give up on a good flagship smartphone?
News from Geek Snack:

The LG G2 is a rather old phone compared to what we have on the market right now. That doesn’t mean that it is outdated, as the LG G2 remains one of the best and one of the favorite flagships of many Android fans around the globe. The handset was launched in September 2013, and since then we’ve seen a lot from the South Korean company, most notably the LG G2’s successor, the LG G3. These two flagships quickly became crowd favorites, and the original model has held its spot as a such for a long time. There still are thousands of LG G2 owners out there who are completely in love with the phone, and they swear it performs just as well as other flagships launched in 2014. Now the purpose of this comparison is to see what the company did to upgrade the LG G2, and how the LG G3 might be worth the upgrade.

We’re going to look at design a bit, but mainly we will be focusing on display quality, battery life and average performance. What anybody should keep in mind is that both battery life and performance depend very much on the user. That means that if a phone will last 3 days with me and has spotless performance in my hands, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will behave the same way for you. Each person chooses to use their ph…………… continues on Geek Snack

LG G4 Rumors Continue, Many Excited for New Phone!

Monday, February 9th, 2015

LG G4 Rumors Continue, Many Excited for New Phone!
News from Air Herald:

The LG G4 is looking more and more interesting. Although LG hasn’t officially announced the phone yet, we are getting peak after peak of the device because it appears to be going through the certification process at many agencies. The LG H811 has been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, which says that the smartphone has been Wi-Fi certified.

The LG H811 is speculated to be the LG G4 for AT&T. Sometimes wireless carriers get slightly different versions of phones, which could be the case here with the LG G4. The latest rumors point the phone to having either a 1440p or 3K (2880×1620) 5.5-inch display. One reason the rumors could be conflicting is that LG could be offering multiple versions of the LG G4 to different carriers. Last year they were one of the first smartphone manufacturers to come to the market with a 1440p screen, so they could be looking to do it again with a 3K screen and the LG G4.

As far as a release date goes, the LG G4 may make an appearance at the MWC, but we wouldn’t get our hopes up. It is more likely that the device is launched in May similar to the LG G3 last year. The LG G3 ended up being one of the best smartphones of last year. It came in at a lower price point than a majority of the other 1440p phones, and had better specs too. The phone was well received by reviewers, but it hasn’t so…………… continues on Air Herald
