LG announces second quarter April-June 2012 financial results

Staff Report

KARACHI: LG Electronics (LG) reported a 46 percent increase in net profits for the second quarter of 2012 versus the same period a year ago. Despite the continuing recessionary conditions, LG’s operating profit in the most recent quarter increased significantly year-over-year.

Stronger performance in home entertainment and home appliances compared to the second quarter last year helped offset profit declines in LG’s mobile business.

Due to a combination of more premium products, strategic focus on developing markets and aggressive cost reductions, second-quarter net profit increased 46 percent year-over-year to $ 138.02 million while operating profit more than doubled to $ 302.95 million from the same period last year. Revenues, while 5.2 percent higher than in the first quarter, declined from last year’s second quarter by 10.6 percent to $ 11.16 billion due to declining feature phone sales and weak demand for IT products.

LG Home Entertainment Company posted significantly improved operating profit in the quarter compared to the same period in 2011. Due in large part to an increase in sales of more premium products and improved supply chain management, operating profit more than doubled to $ 187.5 million year-over-…………… continues on Pakistan Daily Times

LG set to regain lost glory in mobile phone market?
News from telecomlead.com:

Telecom Lead India: LG Electronics has been lagging behind in the mobile phone market, due to lack of aggressive approach.

The recent mobile phone market share report from IDC suggests that LG has become the fifth largest mobile phone vendor in the world based on volume shipments.

Samsung, once its close competitor has now grown by leap and bounds to become the leading phone manufacturer in the world.

LG Electronics’phone division plunged in the second quarter of 2012 and its smartphone sales were down more than 28 percent year-over-year to KRW 2.29 billion.

Giveaway: LG Nitro HD for AT&T

Giveaway: LG Nitro HD for AT&T
News from myGLOSS:

My dad isn’t really the captain of the technology super highway (in fact, his current phone probably wouldn’t even qualify him for a seat on the technology train) – and for that reason, a fun souped-up and yet easy-to-navigate new phone seems the ideal Father’s Day gift for him.

The LG Nitro HD for AT&T is the third smartphone to tap into AT&T’s emerging 4G LTE network one of the first to feature a 720p display.

Lets face it, we DO judge a book by its cover, and that’s a pretty dazzling display to speak of.

The Nitro HD is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), tri-band HSPA+ 21 (850/1900/2100 MHz), and dual-band LTE (700/1700 MHz) device. It also has 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

It also has a 8-megapixel camera on its back can capture video at 1080p, can ride on the 4G LTE network, and comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

…and as a great Father’s Day gift idea, we have one to give away! So, why doe YOUR dad need this phone for Father’s Day? (And if you think YOU are the guy who needs it, that’s fine too!). Tweet…………… continues on myGLOSS

Yuhnke Commentary: ‘Green’ smartphone offers big features without a big price
News from ABC15.com (KNXV-TV):

PHOENIX – Not every smartphone has to break the bank at $ 200 or more. Many of us simply don’t want to spend that kind of cash. Sprint just launched two new 4G LTE phones, one of them is the LG Viper 4G LTE that sells for $ 99.99. Not only is it a solid smartphone but it also packs a punch without breaking the bank.

The Viper has a fairly impressive list of specifications. It has a nice 4” touch screen. I like this size even though it pales in comparison to some of the giant screens we’re seeing in high-end smartphones. It has a 1.2 Ghz dual-core processor, a 5 Megapixel rear camera, a VGA front-facing camera for video calls and a built-in NFC chip. Near Field Communications means the phone can scan embedded NFC chips and be used with Google Wallet to make wireless payments at various businesses. It’s a cool feature that we’ll be seeing a lot more of in the future.

The Viper runs Google Android 2.3. This is a bit of a disappointment. The latest version, 4.0, was released at the end of 2011. Sprint confirmed to me that the Viper will get a free upgrade to 4.0 although a date is not set.  2.3 is just fine but 4.0 is the latest and greatest. Hopefully you don’t mind waiting a few months.

As mentioned earlier, the Viper is one of Sprint’s first 4G LTE smartphones. Problem is, Spri…………… continues on ABC15.com (KNXV-TV)

LG Spectrum Review: Head-To-Head With The Nitro HD And Galaxy Nexus

The LG Spectrum isn’t necessarily my favorite phone. It’s got pretty nice specs and a killer screen, but there’s something to be said about the way a phone draws you in from across the room. I don’t mean to get all romantic or dramatic about it, but it’s still true: appearance matters. Windows Phones have that engaging, compelling live tile interface. The iPhone has its stunning design and piano black shine. Motorola’s Razr has that crazy thin profile, and Samsung has the ultimate combo in the form of its Galaxy series: giant, gorgeous screens with beautiful design.

LG doesn’t really have that, and this is particularly apparent on the Spectrum. I’…………… continues on TechCrunch

Review: LG Optimus Sol E730
News from Times of India:

NEW DELHI: LG was the first one to come with a dual-core phone ( LG Optimus 2X), a 3D phone (Optimus 3D) and a phone with super bright yet energy efficient display ( Optimus Black). Continuing the tradition, they have launched the Optimus Sol, the first phone to feature an Ultra AMOLED display.

The 3.8-inch ultra amoled display on the front is very impressive and stands neck to neck with Samsung’ Super AMOLED display. It outputs rich colors with outstanding black levels and top-notch clarity. Even under direct sunlight, content is clearly readable and visible on the screen.

Adding to the good things of the phone is its multimedia performance. Superb audio output in the headphones as well as in voice calls. The video player played a 720p HD file without any glitch as well. Moreover, the rear 5MP camera took surprisingly remarkable shots – both in day light and indoors. Even the videos (720p HD in MP4 format) recorded from the camera are impressive.

LG Nitro HD, from AT&T, review [Video]
News from Los Angeles Times:

The LG Nitro HD reminds me a lot of the Samsung Galaxy S II, and if you’ve ever seen the two smartphones, I’m sure you’ll agree.

The two phones could be mistaken for twins, sitting side-by-side with 4.5-inch touchscreens, and similarly designed plastic backs with 8-megapixel cameras sitting rear-center.

However, aside from the outside looks, the overall experience of using the two phones is quite different and it’s on the software side where LG comes up short with the Nitro HD.

The Nitro HD is one of a new wave of smartphones (along with handsets like the HTC Rezound and upcoming Samsung continues on Los Angeles Times

LG Nitro HD Review

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

LG Nitro HD Review
News from TechSpot:

The new LG Nitro HD represents the company’s premier Android smartphone in the United States. Without a doubt, it has a stellar spec sheet that includes 4G LTE data (AT&T), a 4.5-inch 720p HD resolution display, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, and a 1080p HD video-capable 8 megapixel camera. It’s also fairly thin, light, and attractive.

The Nitro HD should fear no other device when it comes to specifications.

But when it comes to real world performance, not all of its specs live up to user expectations. Yes, LTE data transfers are mind-blowingly fast, and the 720p display is drop-dead gorgeous. The 8 megapixel camera takes some of the best shots I’ve seen on a smartphone, too. But the phone is not without issues. Lag on a dual-core 1.5GHz processor equipped phone is not something I understand, and three hours of talk time from a massive battery is no easier to comprehend…………… continues on TechSpot

LG P940 phone gets benchmarked, is the Prada K2 ready to turn heads?
News from Engadget:

LG and Prada may have already renewed their wedding vows, but it’s been pretty quiet on the designer phone front. However, a stream of benchmark results have surfaced over at Antutu, revealing an LG phone with a 1GHz CPU running Android Gingerbread — version 2.3.7 to be precise. The handset is labelled up as the P940, suggesting that this could well be the fruits of labor from the fashion-phonemaker collaboration — aka the Prada K2. A device with the same codename has already paid a visit to the FCC, although it kept quiet on the hardware specifics, not revealing much more than a clutch of GPRS and HSPA radios. LG Nitro Super Smart Phone Suffers Super Flaw

LG Nitro Super Smart Phone Suffers Super Flaw
News from LifeGoesStrong:

We have a soft spot in our heart for our first new technologies: Our first slow clunky computer that was a revelation at the time, what with its massive 20 megabyte memory. Our first VCR – we could actually record stuff off TV! And, remember how much we loved Pong?

We’re going to look back at 2011 with a similar tech nostalgia as we recall how quaint the first 4G LTE smart phones were, what with their speedy Web surfing and their awful battery life. In particular, we’ll ponder the wondrous but flawed LG Nitro, which just went on sale this week from AT&T for $ 250 with a two-year contract.

Nitro is a nearly breakthrough smart phone. Running Android 4.3 Gingerbread, it features a klieg-light bright 4.5-inch LCD screen, is powered by a robust 1.5 GHz processor, snaps sharp and colorful 8 MP digital photos a full high-definition 1920 x 1080 pixel v…………… continues on LifeGoesStrong

More survey participants own this model than any other phone, and an unusually high proportion of them praised its durability, ease-of-use, design, and camera quality in our 2011 Reliability and Service survey. HTC phones scored well in those areas, too. But readers had little good to say about LG and Samsung phones, finding fault with their phones’ ease of use and with features such as design, touchscreen responsiveness, and overall speed.

Highlighted in the first three charts below are our survey participants’ ratings of smartphone manufacturers in three general areas: reliability, ease of use, and features. News from CNET:

LG Nitro HD

Cast your mind back to a profoundly great LG phone from 2011. Are you drawing a blank? Exactly. LG has released more than just a handful of Android phones in 2011, but the phone maker has never produced a carrier’s alpha Android handset. The LG Nitro HD for AT&T is its first creation in a long time that comes close (very close), with high-end specs that rival and arguably best Samsung’s top-of-the-line Galaxy S II Skyrocket.

First, there’s the support for 4G LTE, which rides on HSPA+ if you’re not in an LTE area. This is AT&T’s third phone to have it, after the Skyrocket and the HTC Vivid<…………… continues on CNET

This year has been the year of the superphone, but LG seems to have missed the memo the first time around, offering some solid Android handsets, but very little to cut into Samsung, HTC, and Motorola’s Android dominance.

LG Nitro HD Review: You Win Some, You Lose Some

LG Nitro HD Review: You Win Some, You Lose Some
News from TechCrunch:

Short Version

I find myself looking at the Nitro HD with mixed feelings. In some ways, it’s exactly what I’ve been asking for from LG, and in others it simply brings about disappointment. The software, in particular, failed to impress me. Hopefully a much more clogged 4G LTE network from AT&T (compared to the like, seven people that are using it now) will still find a way to outweigh the lag on what should be a high-end Android handset.

Features:

  • 4.5-inch 1280×720 “True HD” IH-IPS display
  • Dual-core 1.5GHz processor
  • Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread
