LG sells 10 million Optimus L-Series phones, stays semi-humble with success
News from Engadget:

Although the Optimus G and its Nexus 4 cousin are clearly the darlings of LG’s mobile lineup, that isn’t precluding the Korean company from crowing about a milestone for its more pedestrian Optimus L-Series smartphones. The company has officially passed 10 million sales of L-Series phones spread across the entire line, ranging from the tiny L3 through to the extra-large L9. LG only makes a partial attempt at keeping itself grounded, though. While it’s quick to acknowledge that 10 million is a “modest” amoun…………… continues on Engadget

LG Explains Reason Behind Nexus 4 Shortage
News from Hot Hardware:

Google may have pulled the biggest prank of the year by launching its much coveted Nexus 4 smartphone, only to tease buyers with a shortage of inventory and long wait times for the lucky few who managed to place an order. Could it really be that Google and LG simply failed to anticipate the demand a powerful and pure Android phone would elicit? In a word, yes.

In a few more words, LG told CNet’s U.K. division that it’s having trouble meeting demand because the smartphone is wildly popular.

“[The Nexus 4] had proven extremely popular, and as such retailers have been met with huge demand,” said Andy Coughlin, head of mobile at LG U.K. “We are working closely with Google to ensure that those who wish to purchase a handset are able to do so.”

LG isn’t solely to blame. Coughlin explained that LG supplies product quantities based on retailers’ forecasts, a notion that insinuates Google didn’t fully anticipate how popular the Nexus 4 would be. That’s a…………… continues on Hot Hardware

LG announced on Wednesday that it has sold more than 1 million Optimus LTE handsets. A version of the device landed in the United States as the Nitro HD on AT&T, although it’s unclear if that phone is figured into the count. “The combination of LTE connectivity with LG’s True HD IPS display has resonated with the public regarding the potential of LTE technology,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. LG said it sold 600,000 Optimus LTE units during the first three months the phone was available. The company also sold 8,500 units in Japan on the phone’s launch day. The Optimus LTE features a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720-pixel True HD IPS display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera. LG’s full press release follows after the break.

LG has announced its intent to option $ 945 million worth of stock in order to supply funds to its flailing smartphone division. As a result, LG’s stock value dropped 14 percent, based on shareholder’s concerns that the optioning would dilute their shares’ value.

LG’s mobile phone division has not done well for a good amount of time, as it has posted losses for six consecutive quarters. The Korean company faces stiff competition from its hometown rival Samsung, as well as other smartphone makers like Apple and HTC. LG has lost nearly 1 trillion KRW (US$ 887million) in its handset division over the last six quarters.

“The rights offering is aimed at securing ample resources required to improve competitiveness of our core businesses… We’ll continue to invest in our core businesses including smartphones, to regain our initiative,” said LG.

LG’s Telecom Unit Said to Seek to Borrow About $ 200 Million
News from Bloomberg:

LG Uplus Corp. (032640), formerly known as LG Telecom, may seek a loan for about $ 200 million, according to four people familiar with the matter.

The South Korean telecommunications and mobile phone operator, controlled by LG Group, has held discussions with banks for a two to three-year facility, said three of the people, who asked not to be identified because the details are private. The facility may be a loan-style floating rate note, a type of offshore loan typically arranged for Korean borrowers, they said.

Kim Sung Hyun, vice president and head of financing, didn’t deny discussions with banks had taken place when contacted by mobile phone at his office in Seoul. However he said the company had no need for U.S…………… continues on Bloomberg
