LG has launched a new flip phone, its first in the last 7 years, the Wine Smart. Its arch-rival and fellow South Korean firm Samsung has in the interim released numerous flip phones, such as the SM-G9098, W789, W2014 and the Galaxy Golden.

The LG Wine Smart (LG-F480) is particularly targeted at elderly users, says LG, and is being promoted as a mid-tier offering for the Korean market.

LG’s Wine Smart is an Android flip phone for the messaging elderly

LG G Flex review: World’s first curved smartphone is in good shape
News from The National:

When the regional manager of LG first demonstrated the G Flex phone, he did so with a bang, quite literally. Casually placing the phone screen side down, he punched it with great force, to show just how flexible and durable it was, while unintentionally showing that the world’s first curved phone can also be used as a weapon.

Despite the spectacle, it still did not occur to me why anyone would need a curved phone, but after a week with the device it became clear.

If you like carrying your phone in the back pocket of your jeans, the G Flex slips in comfortably, without bulging out or poking into your posterior when you sit. It really is quite ergonomic when it comes to this aspect and given its ability to withstand a Korean punch, it should also withstand your weight.

As smartphones are becoming increasingly larger in size, those with smaller heads are struggling to be heard when making phone calls. A friend of mine who recently switched to the Nokia Lumia 1520 has resorted to…………… continues on The National

LG’s 5-5inch Gx launched in Korea

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

LG’s 5-5inch Gx launched in Korea
News from CNET Australia:

A new 5.5-inch LG smartphone has been launched in Korea. The Gx transplants the specs and features from the 5.2-inch G2 into a 5.5-inch shell.

The LG Gx was first leaked in some promotional documents, but that rumour has quickly become reality. The Gx was launched in Korea yesterday and features most of the same hardware as the slightly smaller G2.

A quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 13-megapixel camera, 32GB of internal storage, 2GB of RAM and a big 3,140mAh battery are all largely in line with rumours and with LG’s existing G2. The new phone’s larger 5.5-inch display is a 1920×1080 pixel one, translating into a pixel density of 400ppi.

Running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, the Gx has some LG-only features like Knock On, which wakes the phone after two taps on the screen in quick succession. A series of LG accessories can be bought to suit the Gx like the company’s QuickWindow case, which has a flip cover with a transparent area for notifications.

For now, the LG Gx is a Korean-only launch, but an international version with Australian 4G band support may be on its way.

A Nexus 8, more or less: LG’s G Pad 8.3 Google Play edition reviewed
News from Ars Technica:

Enlarge / LG’s G Pad 8.3, now in a stock-Android Google Play edition.

Andrew Cunningham

To date, Google has kept its lineup of Nexus phones and tablets pretty simple. There’s a phone, a small tablet, and a big tablet. Only one device in each category is offered for sale at any given time. The wider Android ecosystem is more diverse than that, though, and the operating system’s biggest power users demand more choices. Different form factors, bigger screens, and SD card slots are all common requests. The problem is that non-Nexus devices that support these features lack the clean, “stock” Android of the Nexus lineup, and they rarely get prompt operating system updates.

LG Optimus 4X HD to Be Launched in Canada Next Month

LG Optimus 4X HD to Be Launched in Canada Next Month
News from Eastern Morning Herald:

Once upon a time, LG boasted of having the “phone to have” – the dual-core Optimus 2X. It was unique in an era of single-core phones, just as the HTC One X was when it became the first phone with quad-core power in a dual-core-dominated market.

Well, the One X is now a few months old, and Samsung’s Galaxy S3 has become an international hit thanks in part to its quad-core Exynos CPU. LG’s a little behind the times, but it’s not too late to ride the trend, as proven by the Optimus 4X HD.

The LG Optimus 4X HD was first launched in Europe late in June, and last month it debuted in many parts of Asia. Unfortunately, it hasn’t seen the light of day in North America. Canadians, though, have something to prepare for in September – Mobile Syrup reported this week that the device will be arriving in Canada in about a month from now.

LG 55LM6700 Review: Feature-Filled HDTV Is Frustrating
News from PCWorld:

LG Electronics 55LM6700 55-Inch 3D LED HDTV Review, by Lincoln Spector August 2, 2012

I had heard so many good things about LG’s latest 3D HDTVs that I couldn’t wait to try one myself. The 55-inch LG 55LM6700 (estimated $ 1650 street price as of 7/30/2012) is one of the company’s new midrange LED edge-lit sets, offering a 120Hz refresh rate, passive-glasses 3D viewing, an impressive range of connected features, and a motion-controlled remote. It’s also a pretty set to look at even when it’s turned off, with a thin silver bezel that acts as an ultraslim frame for an edge-to-edge picture.

Alas, what I found when I reviewed the 55LM6700 was unexceptional image quality and a revolutionary remote control that caused more problems than it solved. I was left disappointed.

Lab Tests: Picture, Sound, and Energy Consumption

The five judges in the PC World Labs’ image quality tests found that the 55LM6700 displayed good but not great pictures. In particular, the set had problems when those pictures moved quickly. In our motion test, in which a blueprint pans horizontally across the screen, the image was, in the words of one judge, “as clear as mud.” In my c…………… continues on PCWorld

LG Spectrum 2 renders spotted?
News from Ubergizmo:

While we’ve heard that the original LG Spectrum will be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich soon, it might not be the only upgrade to the phone; it looks like LG has plans to replace it with a newer device. The folks over at Techno Buffalo have managed to get their hands on what appears to be a render of a new LG phone – the LG Spectrum 2. Considering that the original Spectrum only came out earlier this year, it seems a bit strange that the OEM is releasing a sequel to the phone.

The LG Spectrum 2 is said to feature a 4.7″ True HD IPS display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera, NFC capabilities, Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, Verizon 4G LTE connectivity, international GSM and UMTS support for global roaming. No word on a price yet, but I can’t imagine LG Spectrum owners being too pleased at this news if it turns out to be true.

Optimus 4X HD will be the first quad core phone from LG and will compete directly with the likes of HTC One X and Huawei Ascend D Quad( it is yet to be launched), which are also powered by quad core processors.
