LG’s latest phone and smartwatch coming in May
News from Hindustan Times:

The company has confirmed a product launch event for May 27 that will take place in six different cities — San Francisco, New York, London, Seoul, Singapore and Istanbul — over the course of two days, due to the time differences between the regions.

LG is trying to build suspense as to what to expect from the events. It is simply using the tag line “To be simple is to be Great” a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson, on the invitations. However, in its latest earnings report, published this week, it says that it is planning to launch its latest flagship smartphone (the LG G3) in the first (rather than second) half of 2014.

Recent leaks suggest the handset will have a 2K (QHD) display, a monster camera and new levels of personalization and customization when it comes to the interface. Also expect it to match or better the Samsung Galaxy S5 in terms of internal specifications, and it could even boast some sort of biometric sensor, most likely a fingerprint scanner.

LG, Olive to reduce presence in low-end phone segment [Hardware] [Times of India]
News from TMCnet:

(Times of India Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) NEW DELHI: LG India, the country’s largest consumer durables maker, will sell less of low-cost mobile handsets as a falling rupee threatens the viability of the category.

“The category is not giving us margins. So, we will have minimum presence in the low-cost segment and focus more on the premium category,” LG India MD Soon Kwon said. LG will now focus on handsets priced Rs 4,000 upwards.

Domestic handset maker Olive Mobiles, too, will cut its presence in the sub- Rs2,000 category because the rupee’s record 15% fall against the US dollar this year has made imports costlier and sales of low-margin, massmarket products unviable.

Most mobile phone companies, including LG and Olive, import handset for the Indian market. Kwon said that the industry will see a shift towards smartphones next year and companies not present in the higher-end category may have to e…………… continues on TMCnet
