The LG G3 is coming, and here’s what we know so far
News from Geek:

Android By Russell Holly May. 9, 2014 2:31 pm

It may not have the marketshare that Samsung has or the cult following that HTC has, but LG’s smartphones have a history of bringing something special to the market with every release. The LG G2 was a quirky smartphone that focused on being blindingly fast, and weirdly put the volume and power buttons on the back. With the launch of the successor to this flagship expected soon, there’s been no shortage of leaks to paint a picture of what’s to come. Fortunately for LG, everything we’ve seen so far has been very impressive.

LG is continuing the trend of including bleeding edge hardware in the G3, which is great news for anyone interested in making sure their phone can handle anything over the next two years of app releases. LG has recently announced the intent to mass produce 1440×2560 AH-IPS LCD displays for smart…………… continues on Geek

LG Overtakes Apple as #2 US Handset Manufacturer; Samsung Passes Apple …
News from Tom’s Hardware Guide:

Samsung remains leading phone maker in America.

For the first time in a year, LG has overtaken Apple in the U.S. handset market to become the region’s second largest phone manufacturer.

According to statistics from Counterpoint Research, LG phones accounted for 13 percent of the U.S. handset market in December, which is one percent more than Apple.

Samsung remained the U.S. market leader with a 33 percent share of the market. Google’s Motorola and HTC came fourth and fifth with nine and eight percent, respectively.

While it’s unclear which LG devices propelled the company’s sales during the busy holiday month, it recently said that its Optimus G smartphone has sold over one million units. A spokesperson for the firm told Yonhap News: “Optimus G and our other latest smartphones gained popularity in the North American market.”

The Google Nexus 4, which is produced by LG, also could have contributed, des…………… continues on Tom’s Hardware Guide

The checkered, slow history of Android handset updates

The checkered, slow history of Android handset updates
News from Ars Technica:

Warner Bros. / Aurich Lawson

If power Android users can agree on one thing, it’s that Google, carriers, and smartphone manufacturers are maybe not the best at executing on Android OS updates. Things were going great in the early days when there was only the one flagship Android phone, but as more companies and carriers got involved the update situation fell apart. Google tried to intervene with the Android Update Alliance, which resulted in exactly zero improvements to update timeliness.

For those interested in getting the latest and greatest OS update the second it’s announced, these delays are a known negative of the Android platform. The growing history of OS releases shows all carriers and smartphone manufacturers drag their feet in the application of updates—but some carriers, some manufacturers, and some combinations thereof are marginally better than others at getting updates to their phones.

To see how well all of these companies have been doing, we took a selection of the hig…………… continues on Ars Technica

DNP LG Optimus L9 review An entrylevel steal

Just when we thought LG was done with its Optimus L-series for the year, the Korean company surprised us with the LG Optimus L9, which replaces the Optimus L7 at the low-end range. The L-series devices are positioned as LG’s stylish yet affordable line of entry- to mid-level phones, so they definitely don’t compare to the company’s quad-core offerings like the 4X HD or the

Average User Rating
News from CNET:

Outside its upcoming lineup of high-end phones such as the Nexus 4 and the Optimus G, LG has had a long history of creating decent and reliable, if somewhat unremarkable, midrange handsets.

The LG Venice is no exception. It’s a variant of the unlocked LG Optimus L7 and the LG Splendor on U.S. Cellular, but it delivers the same specs (such as the 4.3-inch screen, the 1GHz CPU, and the 5-megapixel camera) on the prepaid Boost Mobile network.

At $ 219.99, the device is the priciest 3G phone in Boost’s lineup. But you do get a lot of bang for your buck due to its svelte design, swift and smooth processor, and bright display. In addition, for a limited time, users who purchase the Venice will also receive…………… continues on CNET

LG to resurrect the slide-out Qwerty with LS860 Cayenne handset
News from Pocket-lint.com:

24 May 2012 13:04 GMT / By Danny Brogan

An image (albeit blurry) and specs of an LG phone have emerged with what’s clearly a slide-out Qwerty keyboard.

The phone is said to be the LG LS860, which is being referred to within LG’s inner circle as the “Cayenne”, and sports a 5-row Qwerty keyboard.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen an LG sliding Qwerty device, with it now concentrating on the more fashionable touchscreen models, though the design used to be a mainstay in the Korean manufacturer’s portfolio – remember the LG KS360?

The specs are few and far between, but what we can decipher is that it will run o…………… continues on Pocket-lint.com

Report: LG handset recovery in question

Sunday, March 25th, 2012

Report: LG handset recovery in question
News from Mobile Business Briefing:

An analyst firm questioned the sales performance of LG Electronics due to doubts over the performance of its handset unit, shortly after the company saw its mobile business return to the black on the back of smartphone growth, Bloomberg reported.

According to an analyst with Mirae Asset Securities, the handset maker is counting on LTE devices to power its growth, with several devices supporting this technology announced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress last month. However, Lee Soon Hak said that “market expectations of the company’s LTE phone sales need to be lowered,” citing weak demand in North America.

While LG lost its number three position in the handset market to Apple, with aggressive Chinese vendor ZTE close behind, the company’s mobile unit recently moved into profit after a prolonged period of losses.  At this time it cited “strong premium smartphone sales from the Optimus LTE and solid sales growth from existing smartphone models.”

The company has said that its emphasis moving forward is on smartphones, “especially on LTE.”

LG Drops as Analyst Says Phone Sales May Miss Estimates
News from BusinessWeek:

LG Electronics Inc. (066570), overtaken by Apple Inc. as the world’s third-biggest handset maker, fell the most in a month in Seoul trading after Mirae Asset Securities Co. said the company’s phone sales may miss estimates.

LG dropped as much as 4 percent, the biggest intraday decline since Feb. 23. It traded 2.2 percent lower at 88,000 won as of 2:18 p.m., while South Korea’s benchmark Kospi index gained 0.1 percent.

The handset maker is counting on devices running on faster networks using long-term evolution, or LTE, technology to revive phone sales. Demand for LTE devices in North America, the biggest market, isn’t rising as fast as expected and may not pick up until the second half of this year because of limited coverage, said Lee Soon Hak, a Mirae analyst in Seoul.

“Market expectations of the company’s LTE-phone sales need to be lowered,” Lee, who kept his rating on the stock at hold, wrote in a report distributed after the close of trading yesterday. The analyst didn’t provide figures.

LG’s handset shipments dropped 25 percent to 88.1 million units in 2011, lagging behind the 93.2 million for Apple, according to IDC Corp., a Framingham, Massachusetts-based research company. Nokia Oyj shipped the largest number of phones, followed by Samsung Electronics Co., the IDC data show.

LG mulling phone partnerships
News from Times of India:

LAS VEGAS: LG Electronics Inc is engaged in talks with various parties on possible partnerships, the head of LG’s mobile business said, as the world’s No.3 handset maker seeks to turn around its struggling handset operation.

The South Korean firm, however, remains committed to its mobile business and does not have any plan to ditch the loss-making operation, Park Jong-seok, chief executive of LG’s mobile communications business, told Reuters.

“We are always talking to other businesses and companies (on alliances and deals). We’re looking into almost every alliance that the mobile industry can think of,” Park said in an interview.

“Some of the talks are quite active…but one thing that does not change is that LG is very committed to the mobile business… Our recent rights offering was mainly aimed at investing in handsets, and that proves it.”

LG recently made a near $ 1 billion cash call mainly to prop up its floundering handset business after the operation reported a loss of nearly the same amount over the last six consecutive quarters.

Its slow pace of recovery prompted talk that LG may have to restructure the business amid a series of alliances in the sector.

A new LG handset with a rather unique form factor has been spied in London this week. The unnamed device features a sliding QWERTY keyboard with a secondary display nestled halfway between the keys. Pocket-lint indicates that the Android smart phone was used as part of a demonstration by Orange and Kineto Wireless who were discussing the carrier’s Signal Boost technology.

According to Pocket-lint, the screen provides eight shortcuts to applications with six already accounted for. The other two would presumably left for the user to decide. Unfortunately, they did not get enough time to see if the second di…………… continues on CNET
