Review: LG’s G Flex 2 makes me wish all big phones were curved – The Next Web

Review: LG’s G Flex 2 makes me wish all big phones were curved – The Next Web
News from Review: LG’s G Flex 2 makes me wish all big phones were curved – The Next Web:

LG showed off its engineering muscles with the original G Flex, but didn’t quite succeed at showing us why the world needs a curved phone.

While we saw some boons to the curve, the unwieldly size, low resolution, middling software and disappointing camera meant it wasn’t the holistic tour-de-force it could have been. It was more marketing gimmick and cool tech demo than something you’d want to call your everyday phone.

A year and half later, enter the G Flex 2. Not to spoil the review, but it’s better in every way. It’s smaller, looks better and has a much better camera. Where the G Flex was an interesting tech demo, the G Flex 2 is just a good phone – one that may just stand up to the best of the Android contenders.

LG Looks to Avoid Apple’s Shadow, Dribbles Out News of G4 Flagship Phone
News from Re/code:

Let’s face it, no matter how good LG’s upcoming G4 is, it is going to have trouble getting noticed in a market dominated by Apple and Samsung.

Making matters worse is that both Samsung and HTC have already launched this year’s flagship models with the Galaxy S6 and HTC One M9 both hitting the U.S. market this month.

So props to LG for trying an approach different from the big-bang rollout favored by its larger rivals. Instead, LG is employing one of its favorite methods: Tease your own launch with nuggets of news.

While the official G4 announcement isn’t planned until April 28, LG has already had separate releases touting the 5.5-inch screen that will be on the device and changes the company is making to its software interface. LG also announced a program to give 4,000 consumers a month-long test drive of the new phone.

That’s in addition to teaser videos and other attempts at buzz generation.

Glance at your notifications with a down swipe on the lock screen

The G Flex 2 has a new feature called Glance view. Holding your finger on the display, and then swiping down will show weather, time, and notifications. It’s a nifty feature that allows you to preview more information. It’s good for checking notifications, but some will find that it’s just as easy to preview notifications with knock on. For those who are new to LG phones, knock on involves double tapping on your phone to get quick access to the lock screen.

LG teases a look at the new LG G4 software
News from TechRadar:

If you’re counting down the days until the 28 April unveiling of the LG G4 flagship, then you’ll be interested in a new teaser video launched by the firm. It shows the LG UX 4.0 interface you can expect to see on the version of Android Lollipop shipping with the phone.

According to Google Translate’s take on LG’s Korean blurb, the new software is going to be “smarter” and more “human-centred”. You can see for yourself in the video, but it looks like Material Design features heavily, with bright and bold colours throughout.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge vs LG G Flex 2

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge vs LG G Flex 2
News from TechRadar:

Smartphones have reached the point where designs are more iterative than innovative. While the look and feel changes only slightly on new models each year, manufacturers haven’t done much to wow consumers beyond the traditional rectangular slab of glass, metal and plastic.

LG attempted to shake things up last year with first G Flex, a 6-inch smartphone with a curved display and slightly flexible frame, and Samsung soon followed with their own take on this concept, courtesy of the Galaxy Note Edge, a phablet-sized model featuring a display that wraps around the right side.

These Korean tech titans wasted no time announcing all-new versions of these devices for 2015, and we sat down with both in an effort to determine whether curved and flexible displays actually enhance the experience or are little more than a marketing gimmick.

Just look at those curves

LG G Flex 2 Now Available From Sprint For $ 200 On Contract, $ 504 Outright, Or …
News from Tech Times:

LG G Flex 2 has finally hit U.S. shores. The incredibly bendy and self-healing phone is available exclusively from Sprint.

Get your back pockets ready for a new curved phone experience. LG’s G Flex 2 curved screen smartphones are finally available from Sprint for a contract price of just $ 200.

Sprint will also offer the top-of-the-line smartphone in Platinum Silver and the exclusive “Volcano Red” color.

Although the incredibly bendy and self-healing phone (from minor scratches at least) already debuted in its homeland of South Korea last month, March 13 marked the phone’s launch on U.S. shores.

The phone is only available with Sprint at this time and the mobile carrier offers several options for the unique curved screen phone

First, you can opt to buy the phone outright for $ 504, plus taxes, without a contract.

If that sounds a bit too hefty for your budget, you can also opt for Sprint’s Easy Pay installment plan, which breaks down payments into 24 monthly drops of $ 21. Incidentally, that’s the

LG G4 looks set to be even bigger than we expected
News from TechRadar:

A new rumour about the upcoming LG G4 claims that it will come with a 5.6-inch screen, placing it firmly in the phablet category.

The new leak comes from the @OnLeaks twitter account, which is generally well regarded for its tips on smartphones that have yet to be released.

Although the LG G4 could see a big increase in screen real estate compared to the LG G3, another rumour suggests that LG will release an even bigger handset, possibly called the LG G4 Note, later this year with a 5.8-inch display and its own stylus.

2015 is turning out to be a good year for tech manufacturers and techies as new devices have been released to great fanfare at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada on January and at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week.

Two of the most anticipated devices are LG’s G Flex 2 and the Samsung Galaxy S6. The G Flex 2 made its debut at CES 2015, and many were impressed with its ability to bend and flex just like its predecessor, but the phone features a lot of improvements on the previous model.

Meanwhile, the Samsung Galaxy S6 launched at the 2015 MWC, and Samsung’s new flagship phone underwent a dramatic—and welcome—change in design and has amazing specs that could firmly place it on top of every best smartphone of the year lists.

Here, we compare the two handsets.

Design:
The LG G Flex 2 is lighter, thinner, and more flexible than its predecessor. Pushing down on the phone will cause it to flatten, but as soon as any weight or pressure is off the device, it springs back into its curved shape right away. The phone has a self-heali…………… continues on Christian Post

Galaxy S6, HTC One M9, and LG G Flex 2: MWC’s Flagship Phones

Galaxy S6, HTC One M9, and LG G Flex 2: MWC’s Flagship Phones
News from PC Magazine:

At Mobile World Congress this week, I’ve had the chance to spend a little time the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, the HTC One M9, and the LG G Flex 2 – the three currently phones vying to be the top of the Android phone market.

The Samsung and HTC phones were announced at the show, and while the LG one was announced at CES, it hasn’t shipped yet. All three are being marketed as “flagship” phones – the ones with the best screens, processors, build quality – and of course, the highest price tags. And while we’re seeing three great phones, each with its own great characteristics, together they prove the adage that you can’t please everyone: each has its own strengths and weaknesses.

The Galaxy S6 has received a lot of attention for the big change in design from the previous Galaxy S5, swapping out the pla…………… continues on PC Magazine

LG preps ‘radically different’ G4 and a whole new flagship line
News from TechRadar:

LG has been showing off a few phones at MWC this year, but the top-end LG G4 hasn’t been spotted. According to the company’s mobile chief Cho Juno, the handset is going to be “radically different” to anything that’s come before – both inside and outside.

The Korea Times reports a MWC interview with Juno in which he describes a phone that’s a leap forward from the G3. It will feature a metal rather than polycarbonate casing, a major overhaul of its software design, and an improved user experience to boot.

“We will announce LG UX 4.0 before announcing the LG G4,” Cho told reporters. “I think it is simply the best and the issue is how to best fit the new UX system into the G4 smartphone.”

We’re expecting to see the LG G4 at some point over the next couple of months.

New Nexus phone might have separate LG and Huawei models, suggests report
News from Stuff Magazine:

It may be some time before we know anything: the Motorola-made Nexus 6 just released in October, and it seems unlikely that we’ll see another model before autumn. And whatever comes of this, it’s unlikely to be called the “Nexus 7,” seeing as Google and Asus already released a pair of tablets under that name. It’ll be time to finally shake up the naming scheme, it seems.

Splitting the annual Nexus release between two different handsets would be new, but there’s sense to be made here. After all, the Nexus 6 opted to be big and expensive, while previous Nexus phones aimed to deliver flagship quality at more approachable prices. Having a pricey flagship and a less-equipped contemporary would potentially appease more consumers.

LG G Flex 2 Review: Innovative And Powerful But With Some Flaws

LG G Flex 2 Review: Innovative And Powerful But With Some Flaws
News from Forbes:

The first LG G Flex 2 was an interesting phone. Seen by most people as just a gimmick its curved design and “self-healing” case was an interesting move for LG. I have to say though, not only did I love the first generation Flex, I also appreciate the fact that LG tries to do things a bit differently.

The second Flex is another interesting phone, and I’m pleased to say that LG has really tried to address some of the complaints I had about the first generation model. The screen is a new model, with a much improved resolution of 1080×1920. That gives the handset a more high-end look, although it falls short of some of the other flagships with their quad-HD resolutions.

For me, the big question about the G Flex 2 is how good it is as a phone. The curve, scratch resistance and bendability is really a secondary issue.

You can bend it

Let’s be honest, who cares if you can bend a phone. There is no one who needs to bend a phone – beyond those who made iPhone 6 bendgate videos – and it’s unlikely to appeal on this basis. What is perhaps relevant is that the bendability of the G Flex 2 means that it does actually make for a pretty rugged phone. Put it in any pocket, sit on it, and it will almost certainly survive.

LG’s G Flex 2 is an odd idea, but…………… continues on Forbes

LG’s Four New Phones, Premium Features at a Medium Price
News from Small Business Trends:

Very soon, some major smartphone manufacturers are going to release new models of their flagship devices.

LG is getting a jump on them by announcing four new LG phones. And the company is hoping to attract customers with some mid-range price tags on those phones.

The company says that the Magna, Spirit, Leon, and Joy smartphones will be officially unveiled at the upcoming Mobile World Congress conference. That’s where a few other companies are expected to make a splash with new devices.

LG offers a sneak peak at its new LG phones ahead of MWC. While others go high-end, the company is banking on an audience with a restricted budget.

Juno Cho, LG’s president and CEO, says in a statement on the company’s website:

“For millions of consumers around the world, the deciding factor on which smartphone to buy isn’t how fast or how big it is but how balanced it is. With our new mid-range smartphones, more and more customers will be looking to LG for their next handsets.”
