Smartphones to overtake traditional cell phones, become the new ‘standard’
News from The Star-Ledger – NJ.com:

It’s finally about to happen.

Sometime in the next few months, the number of smart phones across the country will overtake the number of traditional cell phones, marking a monumental tipping point for the wireless industry.

Now, less than two years later, that percentage has doubled, to 40 percent of the estimated 270 million cell phones in the United States.

What is expected to tip the balance as early as next month, Entner said, are the consumers who are buying new devices. Nearly three-quarters of all cell phones being sold right now are smart phones, he said……………. continues on The Star-Ledger – NJ.com

Samsung, LG Extend Dominance of North American Cell Phone Market
News from The Chosun Ilbo:

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics have dominated the North American cell phone market for the 12th straight quarter since overtaking former market leader Motorola in the third quarter of 2008, U.S. market researcher Strategy Analytics said on Friday.

Samsung sold 13.8 million phones in the second quarter of this year, up 1.2 million from the previous three months, and its share rose 1.2 percentage points to 28.2 percent. Meanwhile, LG kept a grip on second place with sales of 9.3 million to assume a 19 percent share.

LG posted the largest growth among cell phone manufacturers in the quarter, shifting 1.5 million more units than from January to March.

Apple was the third most popular choice in the region with sales of 6.3 million iPhones, but it emerged as the top seller of smartphones as these accounted for all of its sales figures. HTC was fourth with 5.4 million units, followed by Motorola with 3.7 million.
