As you know we like to keep our readers here on Phones Review right up to date with all the latest news regarding the various Android firmware updates. Recently a growing number of handsets are beginning to see later versions of the Android JB update, and today we now have news that the LG Optimus G has begun receiving the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update, but we still have no solid information on the release date for the Optimus G2.

LG is looking to make more of a presence in the Android world lately, as besides the Nexus 4 the company released its flagship Optimus G smartphone towards the end of last year. Now if you are the owner of the handset we have some good news for you as according to the Android Authority the company has announced the release of the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for the Optimus G.

The update has kicked off in South Korea and should see the software rolling out to other regions in the coming days and weeks, but just like any new software release on the platform certain carriers can hold the firmware up.

After LG’s James Fisher took the stage during their CES press event and mentioned that the Nexus 4 was the “first of many” products that they are working on with Google, the tech world immediately started trying to figure out exactly what he meant. Are there really going to be multiple LG Nexus device in the near future? If so, when? At Mobile World Congress in February? Later in the year? 

Also, what about the Nexus 4? It has now been completely sold out for almost a month with no signs of a return. The phone is new enough that we can’t actually see Google deciding to push the phone aside for something newer. However, the IBTimes is reporting that LG has alleged halted production on the device to make way for upcoming handsets. MWC is always a popular spot for phone manufacturers to show off their latest goodies, but LG’s Fisher also mentioned they have other “tier-one premium” handsets in various screen sizes to release throughout the year.

Custom ROMs have given us the opportunity to enjoy the latest Android OS on our mobile phones. With independent developers creating ported or custom ROMs, we have enjoyed the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on our Android phones that still haven’t received the official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. 

XDA Developers member Rashed97 shares a CyanogenMod 10 ROM, based on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean, with three lucky phones: the LG Optimus One P500, the LG Phoenix P505, and the LG Thrive P506. Although reported to work on these Android phones, the ROM still faces some broken features such as the following:

  • Camera
  • Google Now
  • Boot animation turns on and off

Android fragmentation, what Android fragmentation? Oh, there it is. Sony and LG are surprising few but disappointing plenty with confirmation that several devices apiece won’t be getting new versions of the OS. For Sony, it’s the Xperia arc S and Xperia mini pro which have reached the end of the update line, with no chance of an official Jelly Bean release. However, the news is arguably even worse for some LG users, who still aren’t even on Ice Cream Sandwich.
