According to a recently released study conducted by International Data Corporation (IDC), Google’s Android OS controlled the most market share in the smartphone industry for the second quarter of 2012. IDC’s survey found that Android claims 68.1% of world market share, with Apple coming in second with 16.9% and RIM coming in a distant third with 4.8%. When you lump Google and Apple together, the two dominate all other OS’s with a commanding 85% of smartphone market share.

Android continues to fire on all cylinders. The market was entreated to several flagship models from Android’s handset partners, prices were well within reach to meet multiple budgetary needs, and the user experience from both Google and its handset partners boosted Android smartphones’ utility far beyond simple telephony.

According to the study, Android’s continued dominance was attributed to smartphone manufacturer Samsung, who accounted for 44% of all Android smartphones shipped in the second quarter of 2012.
