With the G3, LG finally makes a phone that can take on Samsung & Apple (review)
News from VentureBeat:

You have to admire LG’s tenacity.

It doesn’t have the money and marketing clout of Samsung, its South Korean electronics sibling. And outside of TVs and home appliances, it’s struggled to establish itself as a premium consumer-electronics brand.

But LG is undoubtedly the Android phone maker most deserving of a “most improved” award, given its dramatic progress over the past few years. It went from creating middling devices in Android’s early years to becoming Google’s trusted partner for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 phones, which are notable for offering a pure Android experience.

Now we have the G3, LG’s third G-series flagship phone. And it’s a winner.

We’ll be discussing how deep linking can grow your mobile business at MobileBeat in San Francisco on July 8-9.

Smartwatch Advances: Close Look at LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live and Gear 2
News from NDTV:

New Android wristwatches from Samsung and LG make a few evolutionary advances, though I won’t be rushing out to buy either.

Samsung’s Gear Live and LG’s G Watch are good products and will appeal to those who like to be among the first to own new gadgets.

The watches serve as pedometers and let you catch up on email, texts and Facebook notifications while your phone is in your pocket or charging in the bedroom. Even with the phone in your hand, you can check messages on the watch and keep playing video on the phone.

Both smartwatches try to keep things simple through voice commands rather than touch. They use Google’s Android Wear system, which I reviewed earlier.

LG, Motorola, Android and Windows Phone gain market share as Apple falls in …
News from SmartCompany.com.au:

LG, Motorola, Google Android and Windows Phone all gained market share in major smartphone markets, while Apple lost ground, according to new Kantar WorldPanel figures.

The figures show Android represents 58.5% of the Australian smartphone market in the quarter to February, within the margin of error of the 58.8% share it claimed for the same quarter last year.

Interestingly, BlackBerry gained some ground in the Australian market, albeit off a low base, growing from 0.4% a year earlier.

Windows Phone also grew in Australia, increasing from 3.5% to 5%. Meanwhile, Apple saw its Australian market share drop from 34.8% to 33.9%.

Globally, Android reported market share gains in Germany (71.9% to 75.7%), France (61.9% to 67.7%), Italy (58.5% to 67.6%), the US (51.1% to 55%), China (71% to 80.3%) and Japan (43.7% to 44.8%). The only declines were in Britain (58.3% to 54%) and Span (92% to 88%).

Meanwhile, Windows Phone gained market share in Germany (5.4% to 7.5%), Britain (6.7%), France (6.3% to 8.3%), Italy (11.9% to 16.1%), Spain (4.5% to 6.3%) and the US (4.1% to 5.3%).

Rumor: LG hopes to catch up to Apple with fingerprint sensor in next-gen …
News from Apple Insider:

LG Electronics is reportedly testing a prototype version of the next generation of its flagship G-series smartphones that will allegedly include a swipe-based fingerprint sensor, countering the Touch ID capability of Apple’s iPhone 5s.

The so-called “G3″ from LG is said to currently be in testing, according to a report published this week by The Korea Herald. The next-generation Android handset is reportedly expected to debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, scheduled for February of 2014.

However, unlike Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor embedded in the iPhone 5s home button, which allows a user to simply place their finger on the scanner, LG’s method “would likely come as a swipe fingerprint sensor,” the report said. That would suggest that LG has been unable to replicate the patented, unique

LG G2 starts getting Android 4.4 Kitkat
News from AndroidPIT.com:

Earlier this month, LG announced on its Korean sites that owners of the LG G2 in South Korea would be getting Android 4.4 Kitkat sometime this month. It seems as if that some time is now because the new operating system from Google is being sent over the air to owners of the G2 in South Korea. One report coming out of South Korea says that the carrier KT is sending the update out sequentially, although it did not mention if this was being done from purchase date, cell phone model number or some other piece of data. The Kitkat update comes at about 637 megabytes.

Owners of the phone in the Great White North are expected to have the update at some point during the first quarter of the coming year.

The handset is one of the most powerful ones out this year and is right up there in terms of performance with the HTC One, the Nexus 5, and the Samsung Galaxy S4. There is also some speculation that a mini version of the phon…………… continues on AndroidPIT.com

LG Overtakes Apple as #2 US Handset Manufacturer; Samsung Passes Apple …
News from Tom’s Hardware Guide:

Samsung remains leading phone maker in America.

For the first time in a year, LG has overtaken Apple in the U.S. handset market to become the region’s second largest phone manufacturer.

According to statistics from Counterpoint Research, LG phones accounted for 13 percent of the U.S. handset market in December, which is one percent more than Apple.

Samsung remained the U.S. market leader with a 33 percent share of the market. Google’s Motorola and HTC came fourth and fifth with nine and eight percent, respectively.

While it’s unclear which LG devices propelled the company’s sales during the busy holiday month, it recently said that its Optimus G smartphone has sold over one million units. A spokesperson for the firm told Yonhap News: “Optimus G and our other latest smartphones gained popularity in the North American market.”

The Google Nexus 4, which is produced by LG, also could have contributed, des…………… continues on Tom’s Hardware Guide

Report: LG moves ahead of Apple to secure runner-up spot in US phone market
News from Android Authority:

Welcome to the Android era, where the top 2 spots in the U.S. handset market are held by proponents of Google’s mobile OS, Samsung and LG. Validating LG’s surge in North America is the latest report from Counterpoint Research, which highlights LG’s takeover of the spot that once belonged to Apple – though the race was pretty close.

According to the Hong Kong-based research firm, Samsung was number one in December of last year by grabbing 33% of the market share.  Coming in at second and third place – as mentioned – were LG and Apple with 13% and 12%, respectively. Completing the top 5 list were Motorola, 9%, and HTC, 8%.

It’s worth to note that Counterpoint’s report lumped both smartphones and feature phones together. LG may have a lead in the overall handset market in the U.S., but Apple is likely to have sold more smartphones.

Nevertheless, LG has stepped up its game big time against Samsung and the rest of the competition. The Korean recently announced that it’s sold 1 million units of the flagship Optimus G across North America, while the L-series smartphones have sold to the tune of

LG joins the 5-inch 1080p party with Optimus G Pro
News from The Verge:

Sure, the Optimus G is a great phone, but wouldn’t it be better with one of LG’s new 5-inch 1080p displays? Today, Japanese carrier NTT Docomo is unveiling the Optimus G Pro, a bigger, beefier device that aims to compete with the new crop of HD phones from the likes of Sony and HTC. And on the surface, it’s an improvement — the bigger screen has a much higher pixel density (440 ppi) than the old 4.7-incher (312 ppi), and is impressively bright and sharp. That said, the display is no longer the standout feature that it would have been just a month or two ago, and by the time the Optimus G Pro launches there will be plenty of other options on the market if huge, high-res screens are your thing.

After Google’s UK director called supply of its Nexus 4 “scarce and erratic” from LG, rumors have begun to suggest that LG may have cut orders to focus on future devices of their own. While those rumors are unconfirmed, what we do have now is an LG exec mentioning to a Korean publication that production is proceeding as planned and a denial that there are any supply issues.

Clearly, this exec hasn’t taken a spin through the Google Play store or any other retail outlet that sells the device across the globe. Apple consulted Samsung, LG phones before iPhone release: documents

Apple consulted Samsung, LG phones before iPhone release: documents
News from Korea Times:

Apple Inc. consulted the designs of mobile phones made by Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc., documents showed Wednesday, giving a new twist to the high-stakes patent war between the world’s two biggest smartphone makers.

Samsung and Apple have been embroiled in patent lawsuits spanning four continents as part of efforts to dominate the US$ 219 billion global smartphone market. While courtroom battles are still in process, an Aug. 24 jury verdict in the United States dealt a blow to the South Korean firm by ordering a $ 1.05 billion payment for damages.

According to the 3GSM Congress Trade Show Report compiled in February 2006 ahead of the official release of the iPhone in 2007, Apple compared the size and design of its iPhone prototype with Samsung’s UltraSmart F700 and LG’s Prada phones.

The document analyzes around 30 handsets designed by handset manufacturers including Samsung, LG, HTC and Nokia. Of the analyzed models, the UltraSmart F700 and the Prada phones were the only models that are compared side-by-side with the iPhone.

The 2.8-inch Samsung phone and the 3-inch LG phone have smaller displays and thicker designs than the 3.5-inch iPhone. Both models, however, have a rectangular design with rounded corners, which was a key issue in the design patent infringement claims lodged by Apple.

LG Motion 4G review (MetroPCS)
News from CNET:

As the saying goes, it’s not the size of the dog in the fight that matters, but the size of the fight in the dog. Fortunately for MetroPCS, one of its latest handset, the LG Motion 4G, has a lot of bite.

Not only is this petite device 4G LTE-enabled, but it also has a swift 1.2GHz dual-core processor and runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. In addition, its 5-megapixel camera has 1080p HD recording capabilities.

The most noteworthy feature about the handset, however, is its plan. MetroPCS released the phone in conjunction with its promotional $ 55 a month, unlimited talk, texting, and data plan. And, since the phone itself costs a reasonable $ 99 after a mail-in rebate, this phone is ideal for a penny-pinching, commitment-free user.

Design
The LG Motion 4G is compact and small, measuring 4.37 inches tall, 2.39 inches wide, and 0.45 inch thick. It weighs 4.8 ounces and it fits in my petite hands comfortably. I could easily toss it in a small clutch or bag, and it fits well in the front or back pockets of my jeans. Though it doesn’t have the most luxurious feel, with its all plastic exterior, it does feel sturdy and dense.
