LG announces 4 new phones ahead of Mobile World Congress, the G4 isn’t one …
News from PC Pro:

LG may well be unleasing its new flagship smartphone, the LG G4, at Mobile World Congress, but ahead of the March show it’s announced that it’ll be launching four new mid-range smartphones.

Known as the Magna, Spirit, Leon and Joy, LG’s new smartphones build on “LG’s design language to bring optimised performance and effortless user experience to a broader range of consumers,” says an LG press release. PR-speak aside, this means these four new phones, available in both 4G and 3G versions, will be built to premium specifications, but offered at affordable prices.

The Magna features a 5in HD display with 294ppi, a 1.2GHz Quad-core processor, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, 8GB of internal storage, and 1GB of RAM. It comes with a 2,540mAh removable battery, placing it in a similar range to the upcoming Samsung S6 in terms of capacity. It’s also the largest of the four new phones on offe…………… continues on PC Pro

Microsoft announces new Windows Phone partners, including Lenovo and LG

Microsoft announces new Windows Phone partners, including Lenovo and LG
News from ZDNet:

Summary: Microsoft is poised to become a Windows Phone manufacturer in its own right, but is still managing to add new partners to its roster.

In spite of becoming a Windows Phone maker in its own right via its purchase of Nokia’s handset business, Microsoft is still managing to add new Windows Phone partners to its roster.

New to the Windows Phone OEM list are Foxconn, Gionee, JSR, Karbonn, Lava (Xolo), Lenovo, LG, Longcheer and ZTE, according to Microsoft officials. (I’m not sure why ZTE is listed as new, given they were a previous Windows Phone partner.) They will supplement the existing Windows Phone partners — HTC, Samsung and Huawei — according to company officials who shared the updated list at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) show in Barcelona on February 23.

Microsoft execs didn’t say when these new partners would be bringing new handsets or designs to market. Nor did company execs say much about Windows Phone 8.1 (codenamed “Blue”), beyond mentioning that “a compelling new update for Windows Phone” is on its way to market.

[MWC 2014] Hands-On With The LG G2 Mini: Why Does This Phone Exist?
News from Android Police:

Following in the footsteps of Samsung, HTC, and Sony, LG has announced a “mini” version of their G2 flagship, and they’re showing the phone off here in Barcelona. The G2 Mini uses a smaller screen than the 5.2-inch G2, but it’s also got considerably weaker hardware.

At 4.7 inches, there’s nothing really “Mini” about this device, but you’ll definitely notice the lower resolution on the LCD (960×540). The hardware inside is also less than inspiring, with just 1GB of RAM serving the 1.4Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400. Around back you’ll find an 8 megapixel camera hanging out above LG’s now-standard rear power and volume controls. Storage is 8GB plus an open MicroSD card slot, and the removable battery is a respectable 2440mAh. The display phones were running Android 4.4.2.

G Flex: At CES, LG announces curved-screen smartphone for US this spring
News from Washington Post:

LAS VEGAS — LG was showing off its curves at its CES press conference Monday, promising new televisions and a smartphone with screens that curl in at the ends.

The company said that its flexible, curved smartphone, the LG G Flex, will hit the U.S. market on three of the four major carriers — AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile — in the second quarter of 2014. And while it would be easy to dismiss the curved screen as a gimmick, LG executives were adamant that they were not just “innovating for innovation’s sake.”

LG: Flexible phones are the ‘future of the industry’
News from TrustedReviews:

Following the recent launch of the LG G Flex, the Korean manufactuer has suggested that bendable handsets are here to stay, claiming that flexible phones are “the future of the industry.”

With the LG G Flex having landed late last year as the world’s first consumer available flexible phone, boasting a vertical bend that can be straightened when pressure is applied, LG has now suggested that it expects the technology to become a future industry standard.

“Do we see flexible phones as the future of the industry? The quick answer is yes,” Frank Lee, LG’s Head of Mobile Communications said speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews.

Suggesting that the LG G Flex could be the first of many flexible phones, not only from LG itself but the wider industry, he added: “For so long we have accepted the current form factor and there have been a lot of critics where people have been asking the questions of what’s next. This is just a glimpse of what could be.”

SingTel announces LTE plans for mobile phones
News from CNET:

The HTC One XL demonstrating the speed it can achieve on SingTel’s LTE network. It’s high now because there are very few LTE customers at the moment.
(Credit: John Chan/CNET Asia)

Singapore operator SingTel has announced LTE, or 4G, plans for mobile phones, making it the first telco in the city-state to do so. The company has previously introduced commercial LTE plans, but that was specifically for data use with USB dongles on computers.

LTE stands for long-term evolution of 3G and offers much higher data transfers compared with the 3.5G (HSPA) speeds most commonly used now. The theoretical speed of LTE is 75Mbps, more than three times faster than HSPA, which tops out at 21Mbps in Singapore.

SingTel expects to provide between 3.4 and 12Mbps download speeds when the network is loaded with more customers on 4G plans.

To take advantage of the new 4G plans, SingTel will be offering three LTE-enabled handsets. They are the HTC One XL, LG Optimus True HD LTE and Samsung Galaxy SII (S2) LTE. These will be available on June 5, when the LTE data plans…………… continues on CNET

LG announces Optimus LTE2, coming to Korea mid-May with True HD IPS and 2GB RAM

LG announces Optimus LTE2, coming to Korea mid-May with True HD IPS and 2GB RAM
News from Engadget:

Unlike today’s other phone announcement, we can’t say we were expecting to see LG come out with something of its own — and it’s a bit of a doozy, at that. Samsung’s Korean rival decided not to let the Galaxy S III have the full spotlight for long, officially unleashing the Optimus LTE2. The mind-blowing portion of the spec sheet is its inclusion of 2GB RAM, a milestone we haven’t yet seen in a smartphone. Additionally, the LTE2 will feature the company’s “True HD IPS” display, WPC-backed wireless charging capabilities, Android 4.0 and a 2,150mAh battery that LG claims will increase the battery life by an astounding 40 percent. We haven’t received word on which CPU will be used, though we’re hopeful that a quad-core beast (or Krait, perhaps?) will complement the astounding amount of RAM. The LTE2 is due to land on at least three carriers in Korea sometime in mid-May, but we haven’t heard any pricing or additional country availability at this time. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more. In the meantime, check out LG’s Flickr pag…………… continues on Engadget

LG Denies Plans to Abandon Windows Phone
News from PC Magazine:

LG this week denied that it will abandon the Windows Phone platform, though it did concede that its primary focus is Android devices.

“No, we are not giving up on Windows Phone,” an LG spokesman said in an email. “Although we don’t have another Windows device in the pipeline at this moment, that is simply because demand for Android devices is so strong.”

“We’ve maintained since the beginning that LG will support whatever operating system consumers want but at the moment, our priority is to get our Android devices to a level where we feel we’ve covered all the bases, to use an American analogy,” the spokesman continued.

News of LG abandoning Windows Phone made the rounds yesterday after a report in the Korea Herald said that LG was “taking a step back from Windows phones.”

The report also said that Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer would meet with LG’s Koo Bon-joon during the Seoul Digital Forum on May 22.

The LG spokesman said the Korea Herald was taking things out of context and likened the publication t…………… continues on PC Magazine

MCV Announces Expanded Rollout, LG Phone Demo

MCV Announces Expanded Rollout, LG Phone Demo
News from Twice:

By Joseph Palenchar — TWICE, 4/16/2012

Las Vegas – The Mobile Content Venture (MCV) came to the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention here to announce an expanded rollout for this year’s launch of Dyle Mobile TV service and demonstrate new Dyle consumer devices, including a prototype LG smartphone.

MCV, a consortium of TV broadcasters, plans sometime this year to launch over-the-air mobile-TV service with at least two previously disclosed devices incorporating the ATSC A/153 Mobile DTV standard. One is a Samsung-made Android Gingerbread smartphone operating on the MetroPCS cellular network. The other is a Belkin dongle that plugs into the 30-pin connector of Apple’s iPhones and iPads. Both devices use an app to select local Dyle stations and view electronic program guides (EPGs).

MCV is at the show demonstrating the LG, Samsung and Belkin devices along with an Elgato dongle for iPhones and iPads, but to date, MCV has confirmed only that the Samsung-MetroPCS phone and the Belkin dongle will be available this year.

LG’s prototype device is an Android Gingerbread-based smartphone based on the company’s Optimus Vu platform. Like the Samsung-MetroPCS phone, it uses a Dyle TV app developed by MobiTV. The LG phone also features 5-inch diagonal high-definition screen.

LG Rumor Reflex (Sprint)
News from CNET:

Psst…have you heard the news? The LG Rumor is back, and this time it’s called the Rumor Reflex. With a slightly bumped up camera, sleeker design, new touch screen, and a more expansive keyboard, the Reflex is a welcomed face-lift. Although it doesn’t come with all the high-tech specs of a smartphone, it’s a handset that can do the basics reliably and with no fuss.

The device is available on Sprint’s 3G network for $ 29.99 after you sign a two-year contract and send in a mail-in $ 50 rebate. If you don’t want to commit yourself at all, this device is also available on Boost Mobile’s network for $ 79.99.

Design
The LG Rumor Reflex measures 4.2 inches tall, 2.1 inches wide, and is 0.6 inch thick. It weighs 4.7 ounces, which is light for a phone that has a physical keyboard. Though that keyboard also makes it thick, the Rumor Reflex has a petite build and it fits compactly in my hand. Also, it easily slipped into my clutch, and into my jeans pocket.

Front and center is a 3-inch WQVGA capacitive touch screen. Its resolution is only 400×240 pixels and it can display only 262,000 colors, so it’s not the crispest or most vibrant display out there. Videos and games are pixelated and images, like its set of default wallpaper, are grainy. On…………… continues on CNET

Although available only for the Korean market, LG adds two more phones to its growing list of new devices announced before MWC 2012.

With all the new phones being announced from LG, we’re wondering if the company is going to have any surprises left to show at Mobile World Congress.

Tech Talk Review: LG Spectrum
News from KWCH:

(WICHITA, Kan.) — The LG Spectrum has a lot of things going for it, but a few things going against it. It’s a sleek, cool looking phone and has all the cool features you probably are now expecting from an Android enabled device. But the things holding it back keep me from smiling wildly.

The phone has a very nice 4.5 inch HD quality screen and illuminating home buttons on the bottom. The default lay-out of the home screens were a pleasant surprise over other phones I’ve tested. With one screen dedicated strictly to media stored on it and others for weather and other widgets.

The phone I tested runs on the Verizon network, and usually Verizon has terrific call quality. But people I called complained about hearing background noise and sometimes were having trouble hearing me.

The phone ships with Android’s Gingerbread OS. This puzzled me because Ice Cream Sandwich is now available on quite a few phones. Even though the phone is supposed to compatible for an upgrade, not every Android app is compatible. The only reason I can think this phone is not shipping with ICS is because not all of the kinks with the OS have been worked out yet.
