LG’s new smartphone goes official, the LG Optimus EX. The new Android smartphone is packed with NVIDIA’s upgraded 1.2GHz Tegra 2 chip, making the Optimus EX the first to ship with the new upgraded Tegra 2. The new processor will now allow the device to play 1080p video, which is one of the compelling features of Samsung’s popular Galaxy S II Android smartphone.

Aside from the upped processor, the new LG Optimus EX features the company’s 700-nit IPS screen or NOVA technology, the same display feature used by the LG Marquee/Optimus Black phone. The display is 4-inch only, with a screen resolution of 480 × 800.

Other features of the phone are a full 1GB of RAM, 5-megapixel primary camera (no LED flash), a front-facing camera, and the phone is powered by 1500 mAh battery, the same battery used by the LG G2x of T-Mobile USA.

“Customers with qualifying Windows Phones — HTC HD7S, HTC Surround, LG Quantum and Samsung Focus — will receive notices when the update is ready for download,” an AT&T spokesman said. “Since the update will occur in stages, customers will receive the notices on a rolling schedule with different phones being updated at different times.”

The Dallas, Texas-based carrier said Samsung Focus devices running on hardware revision 1.3 will get the update on September 27, but owners with version 1.4 will receive an upgrade later in October.

“There’s a lot to look forward to,” a Microsoft spokesperson said. “We are excited to share more very soon.”
