SEOUL (Reuters) – South Korea’s LG Electronics unveiled a revamped version of its large-screen smartphone G Pro on Thursday, hoping it will help propel the company to the No. 3 spot in global smartphone sales this year.

LG Electronics, currently ranked No. 4, is seeking to move past Huawei Technologies Co Ltd as well as Lenovo Group which recently agreed to buy Google Inc’s Motorola handset division for $ 2.9 billion. The deal, if approved by regulators, would catapult Lenovo from No. 5 to No. 3 – a threat that LG Electronics executives shrugged off.

LG G Flex phone has stylish curves, but what’s the point?
News from Salt Lake Tribune:

Tech » A good Android phone with all the features, but also a curved screen that adds nothing.

Sometimes a technological advancement is made and the people who created it have no idea what to do with it.

That may be the case with new flexible LCD display screens. For years, engineers have been perfecting LCD screens that can bend and roll, which they believe might be useful in a number of applications. Samsung and LG, for example, introduced last month at the annual Consumer Electronics Show gigantic TVs that at the push of a button can go from flat to slightly curved. Why they would do that, I don’t have a clue.

LG is also shrinking its flagship phone: G2 Mini to launch later this month
News from Engadget:

Blazing a trail set by the likes of Samsung, HTC and Sony, LG is set to become the latest phone maker to release a smaller version of its flagship smartphone. In an image shared on its Facebook page, LG has given us a first look the new G2 Mini, which is set to make its big debut on February 24th at this year’s Mobile World Congress. While LG isn’t disclosing any specs right now, the teaser image does show that the Mini will retain the same unique backside as

LG may shrink its G2 flagship phone by a half inch, call it a Mini
News from Digital Trends:

A smaller LG G2 keeps becoming more plausible. In December last year, rumors spread of an LG G2 Mini smartphone, where the 5.2-inch G2’s screen would be shrunk by half an inch, while the phone would retain an HD resolution and Snapdragon 800 processing power. Although hardly tiny, a 4.7-inch display would make it smaller than the device on which it’s based, therefore qualifying as “mini” in LG’s world.

However, a subsequent report talked about an LG phone with the model number D410, which had a less-than-exciting 960 x 540 pixel resolution, and a Snapdragon 400 processor. If this was the G2 Mini, that spec would bring it closer to Samsung’s Galaxy S4 Mini. Would the G2 Mini turn out to be a bit dull, or is the D410 a completely different device? As neither phone made an official appearance during CES, we’ve yet to get an answer.

LG targeting 40percent smartphone growth
News from The Nation:

South Korean tech giant LG aims to expand its smartphone business by at least 40 per cent this year.

LG Electronics (Thailand)’s Product Group head of Mobile Communications, Anuphun Bhakdisuparit, said LG’s mobile business strategy for 2014 is to focus on innovation leadership to create the ultimate user experience and further strengthen its innovation leadership in the global smart-phone industry.

“The company aims to grow its smart-phone business at least 40 per cent this year,” he said.

LG started to become active in smart-phone marketing in Thailand last year with its flagship product, LG G2, targeting the high-end market. The company has been successful in this market segment globally, and in the Thai market as well.

Anuphun said the company’s 2014 strategy, therefore, is to keep on focusing on the high-end market segment with the launch of its latest device, the LG G Flex, which is the world’s first curved-screen smart phone.

“We see constant growth in the smart-phone segment, especially in premium smart phones. This year, LG will continue to develop innovations that will enhance the lives of consumers, while releasing phone functions that truly fulfill the needs of users.

“The first model is the LG G Flex, which comes with a 6-inch HD POLED curved screen with ergonomic design that offers perf…………… continues on The Nation

LG G Flex: A Poor Start for Curved Phones

LG G Flex: A Poor Start for Curved Phones
News from Mashable:

What’s This?

Image: Mashable, Christina Ascani

As the first phone with a curved screen to go on sale in the U.S., the LG G Flex commands attention. It screams, both as an object and as a new kind of device, “Hey, look at me!” Once you do, the implied follow-up is, “Do you like what you see?”

Uh, kinda? I’ve spent a lot of time with many different smartphones over the past few years, and never once have I thought, “You know what this phone needs? A curved screen.”

I have, however, occasionally longed for a bendable phone that I could fold up into a sugar-cube-size device. That would truly be amazing (not to mention useful) and curved phones are a stepping stone toward that magical future. Some variation of that vision is probably why LG reportedly

Moto G, LG G Flex and Micromax Bolt A37: Week’s important launches
News from India Today:

India Today Online  New Delhi, February 9, 2014 | UPDATED 11:17 IST

The week that went by has been an eventful one in the Indian mobile market as three important phones were launched during the week, each of which is meant for three different segments.

While the LG G Flex, carrying a whopping price Rs 69,999, is a premium handset aimed at people with deep pockets, the recently launched Motorola’s Moto G for Rs 12,499 is a budget phone having the backing of a reputed brand. The Moto G has been into the limelight since its announcement a few months ago. As it has hit the Indian market now, the pure Android phone is selling like hot cakes with Flipkart running out of the stocks within few hours of its launch. Another phone that made it to the market is Mircomax Bold A37. The Micromax Bolt A37 is priced at Rs. 3,999. This affordable smartphone is from the Indian handset maker and is aimed at entry level customers. With this price, the company is offering 3-G support and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

LG G Flex

The LG G Flex is a top-level smartphone that comes with a ‘real’ curved screen. It is also flexible as when it is pushed against its curves, the LG G Flex flattens. And when the pressure is removed, the phone reverts to original curved shape.

LG G Flex: Curved phone avoids getting gimmicky

LG G Flex: Curved phone avoids getting gimmicky
News from Chicago Daily Herald:

By Hayley Tsukayama, The Washington Post

It would have been so easy for the LG G Flex, available on AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile this week, to be just a collection of gimmicks. And while it’s not a phone suited for a majority of people — its $ 300 price tag alone cuts most folks out — it is a surprisingly good option for the growing number of folks who want a phone-tablet hybrid.

What saves this phone from being ridiculous? Mainly that all of its crazy features do exactly what they’re supposed to do.

Take that curved screen, for example. The screen bows away from the user, a shape that actually does cut down on glare from indoor lights and sunlight. Watching any kind of video on the phone is a great experience. At short distances, the slight curling at the edges does make the phone feel more immersive — the main selling point LG and others are using for curved TVs. The screen itself hits most of the high points: big, bright and responsive. On the negative side, the display quality is not as good — it’s not “retina” quality, for example — and images can appear blurry at times. The camera, a 13 MP sensor, is also just average, and not a standout feature on a phone that one might assume would place a high premium on good quality images.

As a trade-off, however, the screen doesn’t…………… continues on Chicago Daily Herald

LG G Flex (T-Mobile): Full Review – LAPTOP Magazine

LG G Flex (T-Mobile): Full Review – LAPTOP Magazine
News from LG G Flex (T-Mobile): Full Review – LAPTOP Magazine:

Who says curved displays are only for TVs? With its G Flex smartphone, LG wants to put rounded displays right in the palm of your hand. The handset features a 6-inch 720p screen that’s curved along its horizontal axis, which LG says can boost viewing angles while making the phone more comfortable to hold. The G Flex also sports a “self-healing” polymer back panel capable of resisting scratches and scrapes. T-Mobile is selling the G Flex for $ 28 per month for 24 months, which is slightly cheaper than the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3 ($ 29 per month). But is the G Flex’s curvy design worth the price?

LG G Flex curved phone in shops today
News from CNET UK:

The LG G Flex is flaunting its curves and finally slinking into shops today. The curved smart phone has been available to order for a while, and it’s available from today to take home.

Unlocked Mobiles is selling the bendy, flexy G Flex to take home now, if you have a spare £635 for the SIM-free phone.

Meanwhile high street phone shop Carphone Warehouse is offering the Flex with a contract from Orange, T-Mobile, O2 or 4G EE. It starts at £49, as long as you’re willing to cough up a whopping £59 per month.

The cheapest monthly fee is £16.99 from Orange, but that involves paying out a still eye-watering £449 for the phone.

Unusually, EE has had samples of the phone for you to play with in selected EE shops since before Christmas, which is an interesting way to promote a phone as flat-out weird as the G Flex.

The Flex phone is curved so it curls intriguingly around your face as you chat. That’s in contrast to the

India’s costliest Android phone goes official

The model had been unveiled in the country in December last year, and is the first smartphone in the market to have a curved display. It has been available for the past couple of days via online stores in the country.

LG G Flex deep-dive review: The curious case of the curved phone
News from Computerworld:

Review

February 4, 2014 06:30 AM ET

Computerworld - Does “different” automatically mean “better”? That’s the question I keep coming back to every time I use one of LG’s recent Android devices.

The company’s been trying fervently to stand out from the pack, first by moving the volume and power buttons to the back of its phones and now, with the new LG G Flex, by adding a curved shape into its design. But do those qualities meaningfully enhance the user experience? Or are they just different for the sake of being different?

LG’s rendering of the G Flex; the phone’s curve is actually far more subtle than this image suggests.

I’ve been living with the G Flex for the past week to find out. All hype aside…………… continues on Computerworld

LG G Flex Review
News from Are Curved Displays Really the Future? – TechnoBuffalo:

At first I was really excited to use the G Flex camera because I think LG did a fantastic job on that front with the G2. Then I learned that, while the G Flex has a 13-megapixel shooter,  it lacks the optical image stabilization found on the G2 and other phones such as the Lumia 1020. Shots in daylight of snow falling look crisp, as do others that I took inside of a train station.

However, another shot at dusk while walking came out super blurry. Of course it did, since I was moving, but that’s the benefit of OIS – it helps stabilize shots while you’re moving around and can’t hold the phone still. The single LED flash did alright in low-light situations, too, but it wasn’t noteworthy in any way. The phone is capable of recognizing if you’re taking a selfie and your face is in the shot, and it works really well. Simply dig into the camera’s settings, turn on face detection, and then aim for a selfie. The LED light on the back panel turns green when your face is in focus. There are plenty of other modes that work well, too, including burst mode, HDR, panorama, VR panorama, dual camera and more.

As I mentioned earlier, photos looked grainier on the phone than they do in real life, largely because of the plastic used for the screen. Once I uploaded a few to Google+, they actually looked clearer than they did on the phone.
Of note: the camera defaults to a…………… continues on Are Curved Displays Really the Future? – TechnoBuffalo
