LG G Pro 2 Review | First Impressions from MWC 2014
News from TrustedReviews:

Big Screen, Big Phone: Big ambitions?

The LG G Pro 2 is a large-screen phone. Its display is 5.9 inches across, slightly larger than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3′s one and a good half inch bigger than its predecessor the LG Optimus G Pro’s display. We took a look at this giant mobile at MWC 2014, where it was first shown off.

LG G Pro 2 – Design and Screen

The ‘Pro’ title may make you assume the LG G Pro 2 has some professional applications the LG G2 lacks, but they’re fundamentally quite similar phones. This one is simply bigger.

A key thing to note is that the LG G Pro 2 does no…………… continues on TrustedReviews

AT&T LG G Flex Review – Gotta Be Mobile
News from AT&T LG G Flex Review – Gotta Be Mobile:

In a crowded space dominated by black, white, and silver boxes, LG is showing that there is still innovation left in the smartphone world in the form of the G Flex. Touting a curved display, and one that could bend and handle a little bit of abusive force, along with a self-healing back cover that whisks away small scratches, is the G Flex just another pretty face with some nice curves or does LG have enough muscle to flex?

Mobileworld: LG plans smartwatch, Nokia’s low cost smartphone and Sony’s HD …
News from Belfast Telegraph:

LG Electronics has said it will launch a computerised wristwatch later this year, entering a nascent market where Samsung, Sony and smaller companies such as Pebble are already jostling for dominance.

Park Jong-seok, president of LG’s mobile communications division, said early smartwatch models failed to demonstrate why consumers should buy them. He said LG’s strategy is not to release a half-baked product but, like other smartwatches, the LG smartwatch will be paired with a smartphone.

The South Korean company announced its smartwatch plans at a mobile industry fair in Barcelona, Spain. Mr Park made his comments during a pre-announcement briefing last week.

LG was a late comer in both smartphones and tablets…………… continues on Belfast Telegraph

LG’s first Firefox phone

LG’s first Firefox phone
News from CNET:

Created: 02/23/2014

Video description: MWC gave us a chance to check out LG’s first attempt at a Firefox OS device.

I’m Jessica Dolcourt with CNET here at Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona looking at a bunch of Firefox OS phones. This one is the LG Fireweb. It was announced and launched in one market, Brazil, and that was in October, but this is the first time we’re seeing it. This is LG’s first Firefox phone. It runs version 1.1 of the operating system. It has a 4-inch screen with a pretty low resolution of 480 x 320 pixels. However the camera on the back is pretty hot for Firefox phones. It’s 5 megapixels and there’s a flash. The device looks kind of cool. On the back LG has actually gone to the effort to put some sort of holographic checkerboard so it sort of shimmers a little bit when you move it in the light. The phone is compact, easy to hold in one hand, easy to operate and I also like that it has this physical button here at the bottom which makes it much easier to get home. The other thing I will say is that this is running on a 1 gigahertz Qualcomm processor under the hood so it’s not a very fast phone and your data speeds are really gonna determine how fast it is to use. I’m Jessica Dolcourt for CNET taking a First Look at the LG Fireweb.

LG G2 mini: First impressions from MWC 2014
News from TrustedReviews:

LG G2 mini shows that size does matter

The LG G2 mini is small in name but not so in stature.

The spinoff handset follows in the footsteps of the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and HTC One mini – borrowing the branding of a flagship Android phone while moving to a smaller footprint and reduced spec.

Unlike the rival ‘minis’, however – both of which are 4.3-inches in size – the LG G2 mini is still a bit of a beast. Its 4.7-inch display is parallel in size to the flagship HTC One, but down on the 5.2-inch LG G2.

With UK pricing and availability still to be announced, I had a play with the LG G2 mini at MWC 201…………… continues on TrustedReviews

Microsoft announces new Windows Phone partners, including Lenovo and LG

Microsoft announces new Windows Phone partners, including Lenovo and LG
News from ZDNet:

Summary: Microsoft is poised to become a Windows Phone manufacturer in its own right, but is still managing to add new partners to its roster.

In spite of becoming a Windows Phone maker in its own right via its purchase of Nokia’s handset business, Microsoft is still managing to add new Windows Phone partners to its roster.

New to the Windows Phone OEM list are Foxconn, Gionee, JSR, Karbonn, Lava (Xolo), Lenovo, LG, Longcheer and ZTE, according to Microsoft officials. (I’m not sure why ZTE is listed as new, given they were a previous Windows Phone partner.) They will supplement the existing Windows Phone partners — HTC, Samsung and Huawei — according to company officials who shared the updated list at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) show in Barcelona on February 23.

Microsoft execs didn’t say when these new partners would be bringing new handsets or designs to market. Nor did company execs say much about Windows Phone 8.1 (codenamed “Blue”), beyond mentioning that “a compelling new update for Windows Phone” is on its way to market.

[MWC 2014] Hands-On With The LG G2 Mini: Why Does This Phone Exist?
News from Android Police:

Following in the footsteps of Samsung, HTC, and Sony, LG has announced a “mini” version of their G2 flagship, and they’re showing the phone off here in Barcelona. The G2 Mini uses a smaller screen than the 5.2-inch G2, but it’s also got considerably weaker hardware.

At 4.7 inches, there’s nothing really “Mini” about this device, but you’ll definitely notice the lower resolution on the LCD (960×540). The hardware inside is also less than inspiring, with just 1GB of RAM serving the 1.4Ghz quad-core Snapdragon 400. Around back you’ll find an 8 megapixel camera hanging out above LG’s now-standard rear power and volume controls. Storage is 8GB plus an open MicroSD card slot, and the removable battery is a respectable 2440mAh. The display phones were running Android 4.4.2.

The 2014 Mobile World Congress trade show, the biggest of the year for mobile news, kicks off next Monday, Feb. 24 in Barcelona, Spain. The show is always full of surprises: it’s where we hear about new device announcements, new technology coming into the mobile space, fresh apps and more. Nearly everyone in the mobile industry flocks to Barcelona this time of year for that reason and, in addition to boatloads of of jamón, there’s more news in just one week than in most of the year combined.

It’s where we expect to see all kinds of devices, from flagships to prototypes, that eventually filter their way down to carriers around the globe, and it’s often our first time to…………… continues on MWC 2014: What to Expect From Samsung, Nokia, Sony, LG And More – TechnoBuffalo

The LG phablet, a phone-tablet

The LG phablet, a phone-tablet
News from Mail & Guardian Online:

LG has entered the phone-tablet arena as it introduces its 5.5″ G-Pro Lite, which combines a big screen and a stylus with slightly more modest specs.

LG’s G-Pro Lite combines a big screen and a stylus with slightly more modest specs. (Reuters)

When Samsung released their Note phablet, the concept of a phone big enough to be a tablet didn’t exist. Fast forward three phablet generations and the concept is exploding. Not everyone needs a high-end phablet, so enter the LG G-Pro Lite – launched at the start of February – a 5.5-inch device that combines a big screen and a stylus with slightly more modest specs. The LG G2 was probably my favourite phone of 2013 and I’m an LG fan, so the G-Pro Lite had a lot of expectations to meet when I reviewed the device.

Hardware
We’re talking a 5.5″ 540×960 pixel screen (it’s certainly not full HD, but does the job) coupled with a dual core processor, eight megapixel rear camera, built-in stylus and a 3000mAh battery. In layman’s terms: big screen, big battery, combined with a decent camera and processor.

On the outside, we have the standard three Android buttons on the front of the screen; with “Home” being a physical button, along with “Power” and “Volume” buttons around the side. Just above the
“Volume” buttons is another key that turns on Q-Memo. This app a…………… continues on Mail & Guardian Online

LG L90 packs quad-core and Android KitKat

Wednesday, February 19th, 2014

LG L90 packs quad-core and Android KitKat
News from CNET:

LG’s phone-crafting factories have cranked out yet another smart phone — this one’s a mid-range, mid-size mobile running the latest version of Android.

The L90 is the fanciest of LG’s third-generation L Series mobiles, and can be seen on the far-left in the image above. L Series phones aren’t quite as bleeding-edge as the high-end G Series mobiles, but should have a more reasonable price tag to match.

The L90 doesn’t skimp on power, with a 1.2GHz quad-core chip humming away under the hood. As the only of LG’s new L Series mobiles to feature a four-core processor, this should make the L90 feel speedy to use, and capable of the odd graphically intensive game. Fingers crossed.

The display measures 4.7 inches on the diagonal, and sports a reasonable 960×540 pixel resolution. If you’re not a fan of palm-filling 5-inch-plus mobiles, this more modestly sized phone could appeal.

LG has packed in 1GB of RAM, as well as an 8-megapixel rear camera. A camera’s megapixel-count is rarely an indicator of photo quality though, so stay tuned until we can give the L90′s snapper the full review treatment.

Often mid-range phones don’t get treated to the latest version of Android, so we’re happy to see the L90 is running Android 4.4 KiKat right from the outset. KitKat is the most advanced edition of Google…………… continues on CNET

LG G2 Mini packs in quad-core and KitKat, but cuts some crucial corners
News from CNET:

LG’s new G2 Mini comes in black, white, red and gold.

(Credit: LG)

Most smartphone makers seem to have got the message that we don’t all want 5-inch-plus monster mobiles. But where some have taken it to heart, producing smaller phones with all the power of their big-boned brethren, others are making low-power ‘mini’ variants that are frankly disappointing.

LG looks like it’s plumping for the latter strategy with the G2 Mini, a compact 4.7-inch Android phone with all the glitzy style of the admirable G2 — but much less impressive hardware.

Its screen ekes out a fairly meager 960×540 pixels over those 4.7 inches, for a density of 234 pixels per inch. That’s nowhere near the retina quality of the best screens on the market.

Where the G2 packs a mighty 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 80…………… continues on CNET

LG considering fingerprint or iris scanning authentication for LG G3 flagship …
News from Pocket-lint.com:

LG has hinted that the LG G3 flagship smartphone will come with some form of biometric scanner for user authentication. This could be in the form of a fingerprint scanner, as currently used by Apple for the iPhone 5S or the HTC One Max, or iris scanning technology, rumoured to be implemented on the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Speaking during the South Korean press conference held to launch the LG G Pro 2, LG executives confirmed they are “considering all possibilities” when it comes to eye-recognition or fingerprint scanning security software for its next device.

It also told the Korean arm of ZDnet that the company’s latest phone, the LG G Pro 2, should not be considered a rival to the forthcoming flagship smartphone from Samsung, even though that is expected to launch soon – during MWC in Barcelona at the end of February – and will therefore battle for market share in several markets around the world.

LG Confirms Its G Pro 2 Flagship Phablet, Yet Another Phone That’s Mostly Screen

LG Confirms Its G Pro 2 Flagship Phablet, Yet Another Phone That’s Mostly Screen
News from TechCrunch:

Say hello to the G Pro 2, LG’s new flagship smartphone — leaked aplenty up to now but officially confirmed today by the mobile maker. The Android 4.4 KitKat powered 4G quad-core device packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.26 GHz processor, 3GB of memory and a 13MP rear camera with an optical image stabilization feature to support better snapping.

It’s (yet) another high end smartphone that’s practically all screen, with LG inflating the size of the pane vs last year’s model — bumping it up from the 5.5 inches of the Optimus G Pro to a 5.9 inch full HD pane.

That screen is clasped on two sides by an extra slim bezel of just 3.3mm, with LG touting “an industry-leading screen-to-frame ratio of 77.2 percent”, showing how marginal form factor design parameters have become if makers are shouting about squeezing more screen onto the slab.

Definitions of how large a screen a smartphone must have to qualify for ‘phablet’ status vary — and are likely themselves moving goal posts as more and more smartphon…………… continues on TechCrunch

A Week With The LG G Flex
News from TechCrunch:

Most of the reviews of the LG G Flex have already gone up, but since the phone is slowly percolating out in the U.S., I thought I’d give it a full week of use to see just what the fuss was about. If you watched our Fly or Die, below, you’ll know that I’m excited by the phone but consider it a novelty, and it may be too pricey for most users. However, as a peek at things to come, it was quite fascinating. This week reinforced that opinion.

The phone, if you’ll recall, is a 6-inch phablet with a curved, 1,280 x 720 pixel OLED screen. It runs a 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 with Android 4.2.2 on board. It has an HD rear camera and no external storage.

This is not about how the phone performs. It works quite capably in most situations and offered amazing battery life – I saw three days of moderate use until I ran down the battery. While your results may vary – I didn’t use this as my primary email device, for example – the Flex’s huge 3,500mAh and low-power processor worked well together. While video watching will put a bit of a dent in the phone, I would still recommend this device on battery performance alone.

The real gimmick, however, is the curved screen. First, at six inches, thi…………… continues on TechCrunch
