LG’s webOS-powered smart TV set to debut at CES 2014
News from Ars Technica:

LG’s Google-TV powered set—lots to do, no good way to accomplish it.

LG is set to unveil a new smart TV powered by webOS at CES next week, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Up until now, LG has powered its line of smart TVs with Google TV; this new TV will be LG’s first webOS product following the operating system’s acquisition from Hewlett-Packard in February.

LG makes Knock a standard feature on its smart phones

LG makes Knock a standard feature on its smart phones
News from CNET UK:

The LG G2 is quite a phone, with a ridiculously powerful chip, and great battery life. But it also debuted a new feature for LG — you could wake up the handset just by double-tapping the screen. Well you’ll soon be able to do the same with all of LG’s smart phones, as the company has announced it’s making it a standard feature.

The LG L Series II will be the first range of handsets to get the ‘Knock’ feature retroactively through a maintenance release, starting in January. Is this the end of buttons as we know them?

As well as the LG G2, Knock (formerly known as KnockON) featured on LG’s G Pad 8.3 tablet, and the G Flex curved sm…………… continues on CNET UK

LG G2: One of the Best Android Phones in the Market?

LG G2: One of the Best Android Phones in the Market?
News from Gizmodo India:

What is it?
The latest flagship Android smartphone from LG that attempts to change the way we hit the buttons on a smartphone.

Who is it for?
Like all flagship phones, LG G2 costs a premium but if you are looking for options in the Android world, the G2 is right there amongst the top. If you don’t mind the general brand perception, it’s a great option on the table.

Hardware
The LG G2 reinvents the traditional hardware design of smartphones. The volume rocker and power button are unusually placed at the rear of the phone rather on the edges. LG points at the observation that most users rest their index finger at the back while holding the phone. The claim is interesting and the attempt is brave, but the user experience is awkward. In most cases, I could never hit the intended button on first try. Maybe it grows on you over time. However, credit goes to LG to design the buttons in such a way that it is extremely unlikely that these buttons will be clicked accidently when the device is laid flat.

LG G2 features an incredible 5.2-inch 1080p IPS display with one of the thinnest bezels. The edge-to-edge experience is impressive, and the colors are bright and vivid. Even with its size, the G2 fits nicely in the hand and in a pocket, or maybe it’s us getting used to large-size…………… continues on Gizmodo India

When is My Android Phone Getting the Android 4.4 “Kit Kat” Update?

When is My Android Phone Getting the Android 4.4 “Kit Kat” Update?
News from Droid Life:

In the past, we have done our best to track the update situation for most of Verizon’s phones whenever a new major version of Android is released. We did it with both Ice Cream Sandwich and then Jelly Bean. Since Android 4.4 “Kit Kat” has been available for almost two months and has rolled out to a number of devices, it seemed like the perfect time to get a post going. We are going to do things a little different this time, though.

In the past, we stuck to a list of Verizon’s top devices for a number of reasons. But now that we’re seeing people jump to prepaid, T-Mobile, and other carriers quite regularly here at DL, we are expanding the list with Kit Kat. As devices from the four major carriers see updates to Kit Kat, we will add them to this list to hopefully create the ultimate collection of Android 4.4 updates. That’s a lofty g…………… continues on Droid Life

LG G3 smartphone, G Arch smartwatch, and G Health fitness band rumored for …
News from Digital Trends:

An anonymous source speaking to the Korea Herald has revealed a little about LG’s wearable technology plans, along with some news on the LG G3 smartphone. Apparently, the LG G3 – an unofficial name for the G2’s successor – will feature a fingerprint scanner, and the firm will introduce both a smartwatch and a fitness tracker alongside it.

The fingerprint scanner won’t be the only headline feature on the G3 either, if the report is accurate. The new phone could be the firm’s first to use its Quad HD resolution screen, which provides a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution, and run Android 4.4 KitKat as standard. This all sounds reasonable, but it’s also said the G3 will be powered by a 2.2GHz octa-core processor.

This isn’t quite so likely. At the moment, there are only two octa-core processors worth mentioning,

LG G3 rumored to carry Quad-HD display, octa-core chipset
News from Phandroid.com:

Good things come in multiples of four, or that must be LG’s line of thinking based on the latest spec rumors for the LG G3. The G3, which naturally would be the followup to the recently launched G2, could feature a major upgrade in hardware compared to LG’s current flagship (and nearly every other smartphone on the market).

According to ZDNet’s Korean branch, LG is building a handset that will feature a QHD display and octa-core processor. The chipset is said to be under development in-house under the LG Odin name. The phone might also feature a 16MP camera.

The QHD display, which is of an unknown size, is not to be confused with previous qHD displays. Note the capitalization. The upper-case Q stands for ‘quad’ and features a resolution of 2560 x 1440.

The LG G3 is expected to launch sometime in 2014, but exact details haven’t been pinned down. No word on if LG will continue to locate the volume rocker and power button on the back of the phone.

Rumor: LG hopes to catch up to Apple with fingerprint sensor in next-gen …
News from Apple Insider:

LG Electronics is reportedly testing a prototype version of the next generation of its flagship G-series smartphones that will allegedly include a swipe-based fingerprint sensor, countering the Touch ID capability of Apple’s iPhone 5s.

The so-called “G3″ from LG is said to currently be in testing, according to a report published this week by The Korea Herald. The next-generation Android handset is reportedly expected to debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, scheduled for February of 2014.

However, unlike Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor embedded in the iPhone 5s home button, which allows a user to simply place their finger on the scanner, LG’s method “would likely come as a swipe fingerprint sensor,” the report said. That would suggest that LG has been unable to replicate the patented, unique

LG G2 starts getting Android 4.4 Kitkat
News from AndroidPIT.com:

Earlier this month, LG announced on its Korean sites that owners of the LG G2 in South Korea would be getting Android 4.4 Kitkat sometime this month. It seems as if that some time is now because the new operating system from Google is being sent over the air to owners of the G2 in South Korea. One report coming out of South Korea says that the carrier KT is sending the update out sequentially, although it did not mention if this was being done from purchase date, cell phone model number or some other piece of data. The Kitkat update comes at about 637 megabytes.

Owners of the phone in the Great White North are expected to have the update at some point during the first quarter of the coming year.

The handset is one of the most powerful ones out this year and is right up there in terms of performance with the HTC One, the Nexus 5, and the Samsung Galaxy S4. There is also some speculation that a mini version of the phon…………… continues on AndroidPIT.com

LG Rumored To Release LG G3 Smartphone In MWC 2014 Along With Smart …
News from International Business Times:

LG Electronics (KRX:066570) is rumored to be testing a prototype for the successor of its LG G2 smartphone that is expected to arrive with a smart watch as early as February.

According to a new report from The Korea Herald on Wednesday, the new handset, dubbed the LG G3, will feature a fingerprint sensor similar to the iPhone 5s Touch ID-style fingerprint-recognition technology. Except that the G3′s sensor would be activated by a swipe while iPhone users tap on the Home button to get in.

“LG has recently made a decision to adopt the fingerprint scanner on the upcoming G3, the successor of the G2, and is conducting a series of tests for the product,” an anonymous official told the publication.

The report said that the upcoming LG G3 smartphone will include Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) latest Android 4.4 KitKat mobile operating system, a 2.2 GHz octa-core processor and a Quad HD display.

According to the official, more smartphone makers will follow Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) footprint to roll out smartphones with fingerprint-scanning features next year. Apple, on the other hand, is expected to incorporate fingerprint scanners on a broader range of its products includi…………… continues on International Business Times

When you walk into your house, what’s the first thing you usually do?  Turn on the lights, check the air conditioner or heater to see if the temperature is a comfortable one, or maybe just go have a snack out of the fridge?  Any one of these things can now be done from the comfort of your phone, no matter where you go if you’re using a smart connected appliance.  LG has been a big player in the smart appliance realm, and has come out with some pretty interesting and downright cool things, like this NFC powered microwave oven.  LG has an app for that oven specifically, and while they’d certainly prefer you to use said app on their newest phone, the LG G2, it thankfully works on any Android powered phone out there.  Now LG is partnering up with popular messaging app LINE so that you can perform even the most menial of tasks r…………… continues on Aviation Record

LG to match Samsung with 2K resolution on upcoming G3 smartphone
News from BGR:

It looks like LG’s next-generation flagship phone for 2014 might have something a bit more impressive to tout than buttons on the back of the device. According to a report from ZDNet Korea, LG may have leaked the specs of its next generation flagship phone, the LG G3. It is rumored to have a 1,440 x 2,560-pixel quad HD display. Quad HD is another name for 2K resolution, which refers to a display that has a horizontal resolution (or vertical resolution, in the case of smartphones) of more than 2,000 pixels. The rumor does not specify how large the display will be, but LG showed off a new 5.5-inch quad HD display this August. ZDNet Korea’s report also says that the G3 will feature a 16-megapixel rear camera and an eight-core processor. The G3 isn’t expected to launch until the second half of 2014.

Top 5 Android Phones of 2013

Top 5 Android Phones of 2013
News from Droid Life:

At the end of each year, it’s easy to find ourselves both looking back at all that happened over the past 12 months, trying to reflect on it, and then looking forward to what’s ahead. The “what’s ahead” is about to hit us with a right-cross in a couple of weeks when CES arrives, so I’d say that I’m still very much in the reflection stage at this point. Which brings me to this post and my thoughts on the top 5 Android phones of the year.

The year 2013 was filled with the most incredible smartphones the world has ever seen. 1080p displays became a standard (for the most part), cameras grew increasingly better, battery life is now measured in days instead of hours, customization was introduced, and prices may have started to decline across the board. Phone manufacturers also seem to have figured out winning formulas for the most part in terms of hardware, but only one still has the marketing side (or budget) on lock. All of that helped shape this list.

And speaking of this list, it is 100% my opinion, an opinion I hope you are open to disagreeing with in the comments below. The whole point here is to spark conversation, so let’s get to it.

Rise of the ‘phoneix’: LG’s remarkable resurgence in 2013
News from IBNLive:

New Delhi: “LG! Why would I even buy an LG phone?” is an oft repeated exclamation that many of us would have heard. Such disparaging remarks are indicative of many things that haven’t been quite right with the South Korean electronics giant in the smartphone scene. But 2013 has brought in the beginnings of the change in LG’s fortunes and also the perception of the brand in the minds of the Indian consumer.

Once upon a time LG too had a decent share of the smartphone market and then Samsung introduced its first Galaxy smartphone to take on the Apple iPhone back in 2010. The success of Samsung’s Galaxy phones altered the smartphone universe and left its competitors such as LG struggling build their smartphone stars that could shine bright in this new smartphone sky.

It was perhaps the hurry to counter the competition that had LG faltering. After the lukewarm response to its initial range of Android phones, LG attempted, some albeit not so successful, innovations. One was its 3D phones. The Optimus 3D in 2011 and the Optimus 3D Max in 2012 couldn’t take LG into the smartphone dimension it wanted to be in.

2013 has brought in the beginnings of the change in LG’s fortunes and also the perception of the brand in the minds of the Indian consumer.

LG G Flex review: beyond the curved screen
News from Android Authority:

Smartphones don’t have to be flat. They don’t have to be rigid either. At least that’s what LG wants us to believe, and the G Flex is supposed to be the living proof of this radical concept.

Along with Samsung’s Galaxy Round, the LG G Flex is one of the first phones to feature a plastic-based display, the precursor to the much hyped truly flexible display. However, the G Flex’s design is arguably more radical than the Round’s and therefore probably a better embodiment of the technology. And LG’s curved phone packs a few more tricks that set it apart from any other device out there.

The G Flex may be futuristic, and it will definitely turn some heads when you whip it out in public. But, hopefully, you don’t buy phones just to stand out in the crowd. So, is the LG G Flex a great phone? When the novelty factor wears off, will you be pleased with its build quality, performance, and user experience? We try to answer these and more questions in our LG G Flex review.

Design and build quality

Leaving the curved shape aside for a minute, the G Flex is a large smartphone with a design and button layout that will definitely require some adjustment time. The 6-inch device may be too big for some users, and there’s no way around it, but if that doesn’t bother you, the good news is that G Flex is surprisingly easy to hold,…………… continues on Android Authority
