LG (066570) has found new life with its flagship Optimus G smartphone. The popular handset has been selling well across the globe and even spawned a larger and more powerful successor earlier this year for the Japanese market, known as the Optimus G Pro. It appears that LG isn’t done tweaking its Optimus G line of devices, however.

LG Mobile Teases New Phones on its Facebook Page
News from TechnoBuffalo:

by Sean P. Aune | February 6, 2013

LG wants everyone to know something new is on the horizon, but they’re not going to tell us when we might be seeing it.

With Mobile World Congress starting up in a few weeks in Barcelona, there are sure to be many new phones and tablets being announced in the coming weeks. However, with HTC having an event prior to the big show, and rumors that Samsung will be holding back the Galaxy S IV to an event some time later in the spring, the truly big announcements seem to be skipping Spain this year.

Then LG goes and throws a wrench in the whole thing by posting an image to its Facebook page today that simply says a “new series will be unveiled.”

While quite a bit of the speculation online seems to be pointing to the Optimus G Pro,

LG Optimus G Pro market expanded, more please
News from Phones Review:

The LG Optimus G Pro has impressed us with notable specs and a decent design and although we recently told how it was heading for a release in Japan on NTT DoCoMo, we have also hoped that it will launch in other regions too. We now have good news that the LG Optimus G Pro market has been expanded as it is also being released in Korea. We’d very much like to see it in more regions please and wonder if you want it to hit the shelves where you are?

We think there are plenty of people who’d like to see the sale of the Optimus G Pro in their region and news that it is to release in Korea is promising. It will be available on all of the major South Korean carriers as slightly different variants over the next few months. For SK Telecom it’s model number LG F240S, for KT it’s LG F240K and for LG U+ it’s LG 240L.

This Android smartphone could be a big hit for LG if they release it more widely, especially if it is competitively priced. The Optimus G Pro specs include a 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad…………… continues on Phones Review

LG profits soar despite decline in revenue
News from The Nation:

The Nation February 5, 2013 1:00 am

The operating profit increased significantly in 2012 to $ 1.01 billion, from $ 342.06 million in 2011, despite a 6-per-cent decline in revenue from 2011.

Smart TVs, 3D TVs, and smart phones are the flagship products of LG. The company plans to continue to aggressively market 3D and Smart TVs and aims to expand its share of the premium TV segment in 2013 with Ultra-HD TVs and OLED TVs. The company expects revenue and profitability to see growth in 2013 with more competitive products, advanced technologies and a stronger focus on profitable regions.

LG Home Entertainment Co reported record sales of 9.3 million units of flat-panel TVs in the fourth quarter, resulting in a 17.4-per-cent increase in revenue quarter on quarter to $ 5.91 billion and full year operating profit of $ 480.92 million.

Revenue from 3D and Smart TVs increased with higher unit sales in the United States, Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Although the company had the strong…………… continues on The Nation

LG Electronics posts loss after EU fine

LG Electronics posts loss after EU fine
News from Financial Times:

LG Electronics, the world’s second-largest television maker by revenue, reported an unexpected loss for the fourth quarter as a big fine in the EU for price-fixing outweighed an improved performance in its mobile phone business.

The South Korean company suffered a net loss of Won468bn ($ 432m) in the October-December period, widening from a Won112bn loss a year earlier.

In December, LG, which derives about half of its sales from TVs, was fined €492m by the EU antitrust regulator as part of a record combined €1.47bn price fixing penalty on cathode-ray tube TV makers including Philips, Panasonic and Toshiba.

The profit margin at LG’s TV business shrank to 0.3 per cent in the fourth quarter from 0.8 per cent in the third quarter due to slowing…………… continues on Financial Times

Apple Ousts Samsung As No.1 Mobile Maker In US In Q4 2012 — Taking …
News from TechCrunch:

Apple took the title of largest mobile maker by volume in the U.S. in Q4 2012, according to Strategy Analytics, which said Cupertino rose to the top of the U.S. phone maker charts for the first time ever — taking a record 34 per cent market share, and shipping an estimated 17.7 million units in the quarter. Samsung came second, with a 32.3 per cent share, shipping 16.8 million smartphones. Third place went to LG — but the company was far behind Apple and Samsung, with only a nine per cent share, and shipments of 4.7 million units.

However, despite losing out to Apple in Q4, Samsung came out on top in the U.S. for the full year 2012 — taking a 31.8 per cent share of the market vs Apple’s 26.2 per cent. LG took 12.3 per cent for the full year.

Strategy Analytics said generous carrier subsidies and extensive marketing of the new iPhone 5 model helped Apple to claim the U.S. mobile crown in Q4 — taking the title from Samsung which had held it since 2008. Samsung still put in a good performance in the fourth quarter, according to the analyst — which noted that its market share rose five points from a year earlier. However this increase was “not enough to hold off a surging Apple”, it said.

As for LG, while it remains the third largest player in the U.S. it has struggled to compete with “an Apple…………… continues on TechCrunch

LG posts a small profit for 2012, phone division doing okay

LG posts a small profit for 2012, phone division doing okay
News from GSMArena.com:

LG announced its financial results for the final quarter of 2012 and for the full year. The company ended up with a small net profit, due to a big fine from the European Commission over the CRT price fixing scandal.

That aside, the company saw its full year revenue drop 6% year over year, but operating profit went from $ 342 million in 2011 to $ 1.01 billion in 2012. However, net profit was only $ 80.8 million as LG was fined €295 million (around $ 400 million), which accounts for a lot of the difference.

Anyway, LG’s phone business brought in $ 2.58 billion in revenues in Q4 2012, up both year over year and quarter on quarter. During that quarter, LG shipped 15.4 million phones, over half of which were smartphones.

Demand for LTE-enabled smartphones (like the Optimus G and Optimus Vu II) and 3G smartphones (like the Nexus 4 and the L Series phones) was strong. In fact, with LTE networks launching in more and more markets (especially Europe), LG plans to focus on LTE-capable phones and launch a successor to the Optimus G, the L Series and start a new F series of mass market LTE-enabled phones.

LG’s mobile division saw a decrease in revenue for the full year 2012, but the operating profit was in the black (the division posted an operating loss in 2011).

The TV business did very well– it posted record sales of 9.3 million uni…………… continues on GSMArena.com

Second-generation LG Optimus L7 leaks, supports dual SIMs
News from Phandroid.com:

LG will give their L series a second whirl around the sun with what is being called the LG Optimus L7 II Dual. How’s that for a name? To followup to last year’s L7, a budget phone with a focus on style, the new device will launch as a mid-range compliment to LG’s more robust Optimus offerings.

The phone is rumored to run a 1GHz dual-core CPU, 4.3-inch IPS display, 8MP am era, and dual-SIM support. The latter option usually indicates a launch in Asia (no brainer), but it’s typical in the smartphone industry for a company to manufacture a single SIM version for release elsewhere. The phone runs Android 4.1 and carries a 2460mAh battery.

The Optimus L7 II will be available in multiple colors towards the end of February, according to the leak. Last year’s models were released at MWC, and there is no reason LG won’t do the same in 2013.
