Overcaffeinated LG Spokeswoman Does Lousy Job Of Explaining New Phone
News from MediaPost Communications:

While waiting to be flushed from my home by the now-annual turbostorm of the megacentury, I pondered my options for the time I had left. Viewing stock video footage farted out by the local electric company would only prompt me to think dark, socialist thoughts about nationalization of our utilities and railroads. Sharing my soulful weather photography with the local TV station would only encourage lazy, remote-sourced journalism. Running the family through emergency drills would be needlessly alarmist, especially when our storm strategy rarely deviates from “avoid windows and eat cake.”

So I decided to spend my remaining non-damp hours the only way I know how: by watching overproduced videos showcasing personal electronic gadgetry. And when

Verizon Wireless is now exclusively offering the LG Spectrum 2, a 4G-enabled smartphone that has cherry-picked a few key features from around the industry.

Priced at $ 99.99 after a mail-in rebate (that’s of course with a two-year contract), it may in particular pose a challenge to Nokia’s new Lumia devices, which share a key feature—wireless charging.

The Nokia Lumia 920 was introduced in September with accessories that make it possible to take a wire-free power nap on a charging pillow; the lower-end 820 has a removable back that users can swap out for a different color or a with back that enables the phone to charge wirelessly. Google and LG confirmed today the long leaked Nexus 4 smartphone, which will run on Android 4.2.

The Nexus 4 marks the first Nexus device built by LG, with Google looking to expand its partnerships and keep some of its partners thriving in the brutally competitive smartphone business.

“This is the first time we collaborated with LG to build a Nexus device,” Andy Rubin, who runs Android at Google, said in a statement. “They brought an extraordinary amount of talent to the project, and the result is a feature-packed device that feels great in your hand and blazingly fast under the hood.”

LG Nexus 4 User Guide Posted, Confirms 8GB and 16GB Models Plus Wireless …
News from Droid Life:

On Friday night, LG posted up quick start guides for the Nexus 4 (LG-E960), confirming that it will come in both 8GB and 16GB models. Along with storage confirmation, there is a mention of wireless charging, which will be built in, rather than an add-on through an accessory (Yay!). We also get full tours of the device, like the location of the notification light (same as the Galaxy Nexus), all switches, the 8MP camera, microphones, etc.

Unfortunately, due to Hurricane Sandy, this phone will no longer be unveiled officially tomorrow in NYC. Google has yet to announce a new date for another event, but if they plan on doing it in NYC still, it could be a few days (or a week) as the hurricane will likely stick around for a while.

Xiaomi Phone 2(Photo: Xiaomi)

While the U.S. is buzzing about the Google Nexus 4 smartphone made by LG, China is waiting for another high-end smartphone: the Xiaomi Phone 2.

Also known as the Mi-Two, Xiaomi Phone 2 is one of the hottest devices expected to hit the market. The smartphone is slated to launch in China on Oct.30, and its specs promise to make the wait worthwhile.

The Xiaomi Phone 2 sports a 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels at 341 pixels per inch (ppi), packs 2GB of RAM and a powerful 2,000mAh battery. The smartphone also features an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera capable of 1080p video recording, and will come with the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box.

What makes this smartphone special, however, is the fact that it packs a quad-core Snapdragon S4 chip under the hood, as well as the latest Adreno 320 graphics. The system-on-chip (SoC) is Qualcomm’s APQ064.

The Xiaomi Phone 2 was announced back in July, which makes it the first device to boast the quad-core Snapdragon S4 chipset, although the LG Optimus G beat it to the market. LG released source for Optimus 2X ICS
News from TG Daily:

LG has officially released the source to the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Optimus 2X phone.

The company previously rolled out the update to phone users in Korea, but then abruptly halted plans to do the same in the US. Now, it has released the source file to the update so modders can install it on their device if they want.

It remains unclear if or when LG will officially roll out the updated firmware to subscribers. In the US, the phone runs exclusively on T-Mobile.

Ice Cream Sandwich is one of the biggest updates to Android yet, and includes such features as scanning your face to unlock the phone, a much more robust speech-to-text software program, and an entire platform of data sharing that focuses on Near Field Communication (NFC).

Several other manufacturers have pledged support for the new update, and a bunch of phones currently running an older version of Android.

Ice Cream Sandwich is now powering a decent amount of active Android devices, despite having a slow initial rollout in the early part of the year.

Google saw Android 4.0 as a big reset button on the mobile platform, since it has much stricter hardware guidelines that it hopes will help prevent fragmentation in the future.

Of course, the release of Android 4.1, Jelly Bean, sort of quashes those hopes. Around 2% of all Android devices are already runn…………… continues on TG Daily

The Smart TV craze is about to hit WebOS.

LG has teamed up with Gram, the organization established by HP to handle the WebOS project, to create a television that will be running on the open-source operating system, according to a new report from WebOS Nation. That blog reports that LG and Gram have been working closely for several months on the project.

The road to Gram has been a long and hard one for HP. In 2010, the company made the ill-advised decision to acquire Palm for $ 1.2 billion. After a few product launches — including the HP Veer smartphone and TouchPad tablet — turned customers away, HP quietly folded the operation.</…………… continues on CNET

LG Releases Ice Cream Sandwich Source for Optimus 2X

Key to this trend is its abandonment of its first high-end Android smartphone in the LG Optimus 2X as well as its variant in the T-Mobile LG G2X after being updated to Android Gingerbread last year.

Both phones were known for being one of the first commercially available Android smartphones on the market with a dual-core processor at the time of its release in 2010, being powered by the first generation Nvidia Tegra SoC and released with Android 2.2 FroYo before being updated to Android Gingerbread…………… continues on PhoneNews.com

LG reports profits in its Q3 earning from smart phones

LG reports profits in its Q3 earning from smart phones
News from The Droid Guy:

Ever since the Apple iPhone and Google’s Android operating system came into existence, Apple and Samsung seem to be the only two companies which are making profits. All other companies which were in the smart phone market, including BlackBerry, HTC, Nokia, HP, Sony, and even LG, are in losses. But now, LG seems to have been picking up the pace. Once the world’s third largest smart phone manufacturer has reported profits again, after a year of heavy losses.

The company has said that it made a total profit of 157.1 billion won ($ 138.5 million) for the three months ended September 30. This is a huge recovery from the 413.9 billion won ($ 366 million) loss it faced in the same period, last year. “However, third-quarter revenue fell 4 percent to 12.38 trillion won ($ 10.93 billion) due to a decline in demand for feature phones,” CNET writes.

“LG’s mobile division recorded a third-quarter profit of 22 billion won ($ 19.4 million), compared with a 138.8 billion won ($ 125.8 million) loss a year earlier,” the online publication mentions. The profits have been credited to the demand for LTE based smart phones. In this quarter, the company has sold 14 million smart phones, which is supposed to be a 9 per cent increase compared to the last quarter. Optimus L series of

LG Electronics Posts 3rd-Quarter Profit on Phone Earnings

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

LG Electronics Posts 3rd-Quarter Profit on Phone Earnings
News from Businessweek:

LG Electronics Inc. (066570), South Korea’s second-largest mobile-phone maker, returned to profit in the third quarter on earnings from handset sales.

Net income was 157.1 billion won in the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with a loss of 413.9 billion won a year earlier, Seoul-based LG said in a statement today. The average of 22 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg was for a profit of 158.6 billion won.

The company is counting on its Optimus line of smartphones running Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android operating system to compete with Apple Inc.’s iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy devices, while cutting production of cheaper basic phones. LG also seeks to capitalize on demand for computer-like TVs and other appliances to fuel growth.

“They are improving,” Lim Dori, a Seoul-based analyst at Shinyoung Securities Co., said by phone before today’s announcement. “The handset business is steadily getting back on track. In home appliances, LG is competitive, widening their lead over smaller rivals.”
