Samsung phones take bite out of Apple
News from Spartanburg Herald Journal:

Published: Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.
Last Modified: Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 10:09 a.m.

That’s become a problem for Apple, which revealed last week that iPhone sales have slowed. Part of the problem is that the competition has found a formula that works: thinner phones with bigger screens.

For a dose of smartphone envy, iPhone owners need to look no further than Samsung Electronics Co., the number-one maker of smartphones in the world. Its newest flagship phone, the Galaxy S III, is sleek and wafer-thin. It can run on the fastest networks and act as a “smart wallet,” too — two things the Apple’s iconic phone can’t do.

Says Ramon Llamas, an analyst with research firm IDC: The iPhone “is getting a bit long in the tooth.”

Apple has become the world’s most valuable company on the back of the iPhone, which makes up nearly half of its revenue. The iPhone certainly has room to grow: Only one in six smartphones sold globally in the second quarter had an Apple logo on its back.

When Apple reported financial results for its latest quarter last week, a new phenomenon was revealed: Buyers started pulling back on iPhone purchases just six months after the launch of the latest iPhone model.

Apple executives blamed the tepid sales on “rumors and speculation” that may have caused some consumers to wait for the ne…………… continues on Spartanburg Herald Journal

Sony and LG ditch phones in Jelly Bean and ICS upgrade cycle
News from SlashGear:

Worth Reading?

Android fragmentation, what Android fragmentation? Oh, there it is. Sony and LG are surprising few but disappointing plenty with confirmation that several devices apiece won’t be getting new versions of the OS. For Sony, it’s the Xperia arc S and Xperia mini pro which have reached the end of the update line, with no chance of an official Jelly Bean release. However, the news is arguably even worse for some LG users, who still aren’t even on Ice Cream Sandwich.

LG Canada has admitted that neither the Optimus 2X nor the Optimus Black will be upgraded from Gingerbread. Both handsets were expected to receive Ice Cream Sandwich – the Optimus 2X in Q2 initially, with the Optimus Black said to receive an u…………… continues on SlashGear

Tired of high cost mobile phones? Feel guilty that while you’ve got a paper thin phone, it’s hard to recycle elements are destroying the planet ? Turns out, you don’t need Samsung or LG to stay in touch with those you love.

David A. Mellis, from MITs High-Low Tech group, has created a DIY mobile phone out of easily obtained electronic parts and a little bit of plywood. It may not have the internet connectivity or giant touchscreen of your current mobile phone, but it’s a completely self-made, operational phone, which means it’s low impact and free from the constraints of mass production.

According to Mellis, the initial prototype combines a custom electronic circuit board with a laser-cut plywood and veneer enclosure. LG announces second quarter April-June 2012 financial results
News from Pakistan Daily Times:

LG announces second quarter April-June 2012 financial results

Staff Report

KARACHI: LG Electronics (LG) reported a 46 percent increase in net profits for the second quarter of 2012 versus the same period a year ago. Despite the continuing recessionary conditions, LG’s operating profit in the most recent quarter increased significantly year-over-year.

Stronger performance in home entertainment and home appliances compared to the second quarter last year helped offset profit declines in LG’s mobile business.

Due to a combination of more premium products, strategic focus on developing markets and aggressive cost reductions, second-quarter net profit increased 46 percent year-over-year to $ 138.02 million while operating profit more than doubled to $ 302.95 million from the same period last year. Revenues, while 5.2 percent higher than in the first quarter, declined from last year’s second quarter by 10.6 percent to $ 11.16 billion due to declining feature phone sales and weak demand for IT products.

LG Home Entertainment Company posted significantly improved operating profit in the quarter compared to the same period in 2011. Due in large part to an increase in sales of more premium products and improved supply chain management, operating profit more than doubled to $ 187.5 million year-over-…………… continues on Pakistan Daily Times

Galaxy phones drive Samsung to record profit again

Galaxy phones drive Samsung to record profit again
News from San Francisco Chronicle:

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Samsung, the world’s largest technology firm by revenue, reported another record-high quarterly profit as customers flocked to Galaxy smartphones amid the absence of competitors, which helped the South Korean firm outdo rivals even at one of the most challenging times for the global tech industry.

Samsung Electronics Co. said Friday its net profit reached a record-high of 5.2 trillion won ($ 4.5 billion) in the three months ending in June, a 48 percent jump from a year earlier.

But the bottom line was lower than a median market consensus of 5.6 trillion won based on a poll of seven analysts by Yonhap Infomax.

Its second-quarter operating profit spiked 79 percent over a year earlier to 6.7 trillion won and its revenue rose 21 percent to 47.6 trillion won, matching Samsung’s guidance released earli…………… continues on San Francisco Chronicle

LG sells 13.1m phones in Q2 ’12, 44% were smartphones
News from SlashGear:

We know you’re excited about all these financial results, so we’ll just keep them coming. LG has managed a healthy profit overall for the second quarter, up 46% compared to the same period last year, but its cellphone business took a hit. That caused an overall decline in revenues too compared to last year, down by 10.6% to $ 11.16 billion. LG’s cellphone business may not be looking good, but its home entertainment section is looking better than ever.

LG sold 13.1 million phones worldwide in the second quarter, with 44% of those being smartphones, up from 36% last quarter thanks to strong LTE handset deployment. Revenues were down 27.5% year-on-year at $ 2.01 billion, resulting in a loss of $ 49.48 million for that section of the company. LG notes that it plans to rollout further LTE-enabled phones in the second half of the year across the United States and Europe that should bolster its smartphone numbers.

The other part of LG that helped offset the loss in the cellphone division was Home Appliances. Revenues increased to $ 2.50 billion, resulting in a third fold increase in profit to $ 143.23 million. That’s all thanks to a dive…………… continues on SlashGear

LG Elec profit doubles on TVs but phone business in red
News from Reuters:

Wed Jul 25, 2012 2:15am EDT

* Q2 operating profit 349 bln won, in line with forecasts

* TV division profit more than doubled to 216 bln won

* Cellphone division swings to a 59 bln won loss

* Shares end down 2.1 pct, underperform wider market

By Miyoung Kim

SEOUL, July 25 (Reuters) – LG Electronics Inc, the world’s No.2 TV maker, said on Wednesday quarterly profit more than doubled on a jump in TV sales but its cellphone business swung to a worrying loss, squeezed by growing competition from Apple and Samsung as well as low-cost producers in China.

Its cellphone division, which accounts for around one-fifth of sales and has drawn comparisons with struggling rivals like Nokia, faces further uphill battles with a widely expected launch of a new iPhone from Apple and robust sales for Samsung’s new Galaxy smartphone.

“LG’s mobile phone business will remain its biggest concern — under the most optimistic scenario, it will probably only make a very small profit for the current quarter,” said Kevin Lee, an analy…………… continues on Reuters

LG has been turning a corner of late, getting its mobile division out of a six-quarter-long rut.

Today’s Q2 report outlines a 46 percent increase in net profits year-over-year at $ 138 million, though phone sales continue to be an obstacle.

Overall revenues went up from last quarter, but are still down from a year ago. The handset division in particular had an operating loss of $ 49.5 million, which has a lot to do with the decline in feature phone sales. Smartphone sales, on the other hand, rose to 44 percent of all units sold, which is up from Q1′s 36 percent.

It’s not expected that LG compete directly with the iPhone, but the company…………… continues on TechCrunch

LG Spectrum 2 renders spotted?
News from Ubergizmo:

While we’ve heard that the original LG Spectrum will be receiving Ice Cream Sandwich soon, it might not be the only upgrade to the phone; it looks like LG has plans to replace it with a newer device. The folks over at Techno Buffalo have managed to get their hands on what appears to be a render of a new LG phone – the LG Spectrum 2. Considering that the original Spectrum only came out earlier this year, it seems a bit strange that the OEM is releasing a sequel to the phone.

The LG Spectrum 2 is said to feature a 4.7″ True HD IPS display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera, NFC capabilities, Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, Verizon 4G LTE connectivity, international GSM and UMTS support for global roaming. No word on a price yet, but I can’t imagine LG Spectrum owners being too pleased at this news if it turns out to be true.

LG Spectrum’s Ice Cream Sandwich is “very close”
News from SlashGear:

Everyone is talking about the latest version of Android, version 4.1 also known as Jelly Bean. But there are millions of smartphone owners who still haven’t gotten the update to version 4.0. That version of Android, known better as Ice Cream Sandwich, is now poised to grade the LG Spectrum phone, as Google and manufacturers continue to push out as many updates as possible.

A company representative posted a message on an official LG forum in which he wrote that the update to the recent version of Android, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, is “very close to release.” It seems that the only part of the process still needing to be finalized is on the Verizon side of things.

Ice Cream Sandwich is one of the biggest updates to Android yet, and includes such features as scanning your face to unlock the phone, a much more robust speech-to-text software program, and an entire platform of data sharing that focuses on Near Field Communication (NFC). Several other manufacturers have pledged support for the new update, and a bunch of phones currently running an older version of Android.
