Battle of the Big Android Phones: LG Announces 5-inch Optimus Vu

Battle of the Big Android Phones: LG Announces 5-inch Optimus Vu
News from PC Magazine:

Hey, you got your tablet in my smartphone! You got your smartphone in my tablet.

And now, LG is hoping to get its newly announced Optimus Vu smartphone into the market previously owned by Samsung’s Galaxy Note – the world of the ultra-sized devices, that is.

Not content to wait for this year’s Mobile World Congress to unveil its big ol’ smartphone, LG has released some pictures and confirmed the specs of the second Korean-made Android smartphone to push the five-inches-or-bigger size classification.

But here’s the stinker for U.S. enthusiasts: The LTE smartphone’s scheduled to debut in Korea in March, and there’s been no announcement for when it might go international. In…………… continues on PC Magazine

Tech Talk Review: LG Spectrum
News from KWCH:

(WICHITA, Kan.) — The LG Spectrum has a lot of things going for it, but a few things going against it. It’s a sleek, cool looking phone and has all the cool features you probably are now expecting from an Android enabled device. But the things holding it back keep me from smiling wildly.

The phone has a very nice 4.5 inch HD quality screen and illuminating home buttons on the bottom. The default lay-out of the home screens were a pleasant surprise over other phones I’ve tested. With one screen dedicated strictly to media stored on it and others for weather and other widgets.

The phone I tested runs on the Verizon network, and usually Verizon has terrific call quality. But people I called complained about hearing background noise and sometimes were having trouble hearing me.

The phone ships with Android’s Gingerbread OS. This puzzled me because Ice Cream Sandwich is now available on quite a few phones. Even though the phone is supposed to compatible for an upgrade, not every Android app is compatible. The only reason I can think this phone is not shipping with ICS is because not all of the kinks with the OS have been worked out yet.

LG Spectrum 4G now just $79.99 at online retailer

LG Spectrum 4G now just $ 79.99 at online retailer
News from Technology Bloom News:

If you happen to have Verizon for your wireless provider of choice and at the same time do a lot of travelling overseas, your Verizon-issued handset would definitely be useless when in a different country. However, with the addition of the LG Spectrum 4G to the lineup of the carrier, that is about to change. You see, the LG Spectrum 4G is considered as the first global-ready world phone being offered by Verizon so if you have one of these babies, you no longer have to contend with the problem of finding a mobile phone in whatever country or territory you end up on.

However, if the $ 199.99 price point of the LG Spectrum 4G when you get it directly from the carrier somehow puts you off, then you would certainly want to consider the current deal that Amazon Wireless has for the handset. Currently, the wireless arm of retail giant Amazon is offering the LG Spectrum 4G from Verizon for an unbelievable low price of $ 79.99. You would need to sig…………… continues on Technology Bloom News

LG Prada Phone 3.0 teardown reveals typical Android components
News from The Verge:

If you’re in the market for a fashion device like the LG Prada Phone 3.0, it’s doubtful that you plan on ripping it apart, let alone give it a tiny single scratch. Thankfully the fine folks over at XDA.cn don’t quite share these sentiments, and have performed a teardown of the monochrome-UI Android 2.3 handset. We already knew what was under that fancy Prada exterior — a 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430 chip, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and an 8-megapixel camera — so there isn’t much surprising here, though XDA.cn did note that the engineering tolerances on the main board are impressive. If your interest is piqued by this carnage, the phone is available now on T-Mobile in Britain. Hit the source link below for the whole stylish gallery.

Thanks, tids2k!

LG Fantasy or Miracle gets Tango hands-on
News from SlashGear:

The next generation of Windows Phone devices appears to be soon approaching and with this glimpse of the device that may be called LG Fantasy or LG Miracle we get a look at the incremental software update known as Tango. What we’ve heard about Tango thus far appears to be true here: that it doesn’t look all the different from Windows Phone Mango and that it’ll work on devices with slightly lower specs than the highest breeds we’ve seen thus far. First head back to our newest notes on Tango, then head below to see the newest hands-on video straight out of Romania.

This hands-on video is showing off the LG Fantasy E740 (aka the Miracle aka the Myracle) and shows how very similar it is to other recent LG devices such as the LG Spectrum – though this time with Windows Phone instead of Android. This device will come with a 4-inch NOVA display with WVGA resolution, a front-facing VGA camera for video chat and a back-facing 5 megapixel camera. This device will have 512MB of RAM – leading us to believe t…………… continues on SlashGear

Pics of Tegra 3 LG phone spotted in the wild
News from TG Daily:

LG is apparently ready to step into the market of super-powered smartphone as it plans to launch a phone with a Tegra 3 chip.

The quad-core processor will offer immense processing power while also implementing technology to prevent excess strain on battery life. Modaco.com reports it will have a 2000 mAh battery.

The LG device will reportedly be called the X3, and uses the internal product number P880. While nothing from the manufacturer has been officially announced, it’s believed to have a 4.7-inch HD display and the latest version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

In addition, it will have an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, with 16 GB of internal storage and a microSD slot for extra space.

Based on screenshots obtained by Modaco, the LG X3 is clocking in with benchmark numbers far beyond those of the Galaxy Tab tablet and around twice the numbers of the already impressive Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

In other words, all that power under the hood actually means something. It’s expected that the X3 will make its official debut at the Mobile World Congress, which is to be held at the end of this month in Barcelona, Spain.

Also set to be unveiled at the mobile trad show is an HTC phone…………… continues on TG Daily

Is this Motorola’s first Intel Medfield-powered phone?
News from Digitaltrends.com:

A leaked image could be our first look at Motorola’s Intel Medfield-powered smartphone, which could also be its first to run Android 4.0 too.

Intel’s push into the world of mobile device processors appears to be moving forward, as a new image has been leaked of what’s believed to be Motorola’s first smartphone to use Intel’s Medfield system-on-a-chip.

A prototype phone using the Atom-based chip was revealed late last year, and although LG was rumored to be producing a device for Intel, it was Lenovo and Motorola who announced at CES 2012 they would be making use of the Medfield.

Lenovo’s K800 made a brief appearance at the show, but Motorola’s first efforts were nowhere to be seen. This could all change at Mobile World Congress though, as the phone you see here could take center stage.

The currently unnamed phone has been leaked to continues on Digitaltrends.com

iPhone 4S Rival Alert : Supersized LG Optimus Vu Appears Next To Galaxy Note
News from ITProPortal:

A picture showing the LG Optimus Vu posing next to the Samsung Galaxy Note, has emerged on the web (via Engadget) showing that the phone is slightly shorter than the Note but also a tad wider.

The Optimus Vu differs from the rest of the Android smartphones on the market by adopting a 4:3 screen ratio. Indeed, it is the first time we saw a phone with this resolution, one which has been made popular by the Apple iPad.

A screen capture of the LG Optimus Vu screen also shows that the device could come with a stylus tool, which would make it very similar to the 5.3-inch Galaxy Note.

The Vu is said to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread rather than Ice Cream Sandwich, with 8GB onboard memory, Wi-Fi, a microSD card slot, Bluetooth, 1GB RAM, a 1024×768 pixels resolution (like the iPad), an eight megapixel camera and a dual core system on chip clocked at 1.5GHz.

The phone will be released at the forthcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona end of this month during an LG event that will be held on Sunday 26th.

Prada phone by LG 3.0 review
News from Engadget:

LG and Prada have a history of collaboration; their debut phone arrived around the same time as the first iPhone, sporting a black and white display, a petite footprint and a 2-megapixel camera. Next, the Prada II brandished a sliding QWERTY keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera and arrived at a time when WiFi functionality was a big enough deal to note on the press release. Four years on, the pair have rolled their sleeves and attempted to reclaim a place among the top devices, with classy aesthetics backed up by a strong hardware and attractively customized software. This is the team’s first attempt at an Android device, and on paper it’s got some respectable specifications, including a 4.3-inch NOVA Plus display, a dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera sensor that appears to be the same one found on LG’s 2011 flagship models. Granted, LG probably wasn’t ever planning to include its latest HD IPS screen on a phone where branding was dominated by the other partner, but this smartphone still wants to appeal beyond its good looks.<…………… continues on Engadget

We are fast approaching the big phone and tablet focused show in Barcelona and another device has been leaked. The Miracle is LG’s next Windows Phone 7.5 Mango handset, according to Stuff.

We can see from the image a 5MP rear facing camera and other specifications include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz processor, 8GB of internal storage and near field communications (NFC) technology.

LG apparently has fitted the Miracle with a 4in Nova display. This technology was used on the LG Optimus Black and boasts exceptional brightness.

LG Miracle appears in real life, we start to believe
News from Engadget:

LG’s smartphone workshop is keeping itself busy. Alongside the manufacturer’s attempt to out-Note Samsung, its latest Windows Phone has resurfaced. A kindly mole has offered some better focused (but unfortunately watermarked to heck) shots of LG’s first Mango-laced Windows Phone. Skinnier that we expected, we can now make out a front-facing camera, paired up with a rear-facing five-megapixel primary shooter on the back. It’s still a prototype, judging by that not-so-subtle “not for sale” etching on the back, but expect the Miracle — when it does go official — to match those middleweight credentials leaked so far.

The Android conundrum
News from India Today:

Froyo, Gingerbread or Ice-Cream Sandwich? Dual-core or single-core? Keyboard or no keyboard? Motorola, LG, HTC, Samsung or Sony Ericsson?

Out in the market to buy a phone running Google’s Android mobile operating system? Welcome to the club of the largest mobile operating systems, but with over 200 devices running one version of Android or the other, choosing the right phone is hardly an enviable task. Let’s look at the two important things you have to keep in mind while buying an Android phone and the best devices at every Android price point.

Quad-core worth the wait:
Processors will only get faster every few months. Most of the fastest (and thus most expensive) Android devices are powered by either Qualcomm Snapdragon or Nvidia Tegra dual-core processors. But a greater number of cores does not make a processor that much faster; it just makes it more efficient at handling data.

Android devices can have multiple processes on at one time, but multi-core processors could prevent phones from hanging, which is a constant issue with early Android models.

Buying a multi-core processor is expensive, so getting a dualcore device such as the HTC Sensation with a dual-core Nvidia Tegra processor can be an expensive proposition. Sure, the Sensation has ‘Augmented Reality’ applications, great video processing and what not. But is…………… continues on India Today
