LG Quad-core 4X HD Smartphone Hands On

LG Quad-core 4X HD Smartphone Hands On
News from Mashable:

BARCELONA: Spend enough time at Mobile World Congress and soon you find that you can’t tell one gray slab, big-screen smart phone from the next. The screen sizes vary a bit, and some have smooth backs, while others offer ridges, but most of the handhelds unveiled at the show, especially the Android ones, look very much alike. On the outside, LG’s powerful Optimus 4X HD is a shining example of the look-alike super-phone species. You have to look inside to see what truly sets it apart.

LG’s Optimus 4X HD was the first out of the gate with Nvidia’s Tegra 3 quadcore CPU. This 1.5 GHz workhorse gives it enviable power, which LG likes to demonstrate by showing just how much work each core is doing right on screen. Those animated bars serve no real purpose except to make Optimus HD owners feel good about all the cores they have. Check out the slideshow and video and you can see the core indicators running in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. There’s also, by the way, a special, high-capacity 2000mAh battery designed to handle the extra needs of all those cores.

The pleasingly thin 8.6 mm device’s other claim to fame is its bright and sharp 4.7-inch True HD IPS display. It is stunn…………… continues on Mashable

LG Beacon (MetroPCS)
News from PC Magazine:

The LG Beacon ($ 39 direct) is a solid, affordable cell phone if you’re looking to talk and text on the cheap with an inexpensive plan from MetroPCS. It has a nice slide out QWERTY keyboard, a responsive touch screen, and pretty good call quality. It’s also a decent music player, though it stumbles when it comes to all other forms of media. But if you place texting above all else, it’s a good choice for the money.

Design and Call Quality
At 4.1 by 2.1 by 0.7 inches (HWD) and 4.4 ounces, the Beacon is light, but it’s also super thick. The back is a metallic red plastic, while the front is matte black. The 2.8-inch capacitive touch screen features 240-by-400-pixel resolution and is surprisingly responsive, but feels a bit cramped; the whole phone feels like it can stand to be a quarter-inch wider.

LG, HTC unveil faster quad-core phones
News from The Journal News | LoHud.com:

BARCELONA (USA TODAY) — Speedier phones, fresh tablets, news of all things mobile. This city is the center of the wireless universe this week as more than 60,000 people attend the Mobile World Congress, one of the industry’s top annual gatherings.

Set within the backdrop of a Spanish palace, the show attracts about 1,400 exhibitors, 12,000 app developers and executive headliners such as Google’s Eric Schmidt, Cisco’s John Chambers, Nokia’s Stephen Elop, and Ford Motor’s William Clay Ford Jr. Facebook Chief Technology Officer Bret Taylor is also scheduled to speak.

Later in the week, Microsoft is expected to unveil the “consumer preview” for the Windows 8 operating system.

Of course, this is also a device-centric event. A variety of ever thinner phones will be on display, some with more robust quad-core innards. LG announced the new LG Optimus 4X HD, a quad-core phone that runs Android 4.0, the latest version of the mobile operating system that’s best known as Ice Cream Sandwich. LG also is showing off the LG Optimus Vu, a device that’s between a tablet and smartphone and is vaguely similar to the Galaxy Note that rival Samsung is already selling.

Creative Strategies President Tim Bajarin, a leading tech analyst, says Microsoft and Nokia might announce lower-priced phones slated for the U.S.

OK Labs, LG Working on Secure, Virtualized Phones for DoD
News from PCWorld:

Government workers might not be best known for their sense of style, but some Defense Department workers may soon be carrying Prada – the phones, that is.

With a U.S. Department of Defense contract in hand, Open Kernel Labs is working with LG to develop a secure version of the Prada Android phone for the department’s workers. Employees who have the phones will be able to access government data using secure apps, OK Labs said.

The DoD has not made any commitments about the number of phones it plans to buy and OK Labs can’t disclose exactly which applications will be secured on the phones, said Carl Nerup, vice president of global business and corporate development for OK Labs. The DoD can decide to let users switch between a personal section of the phone and a work section or simply load the secure apps onto the phones.

In a press release about the deal, OK Labs said the companies are working on securing other devices including tablets and devices running other mobile platforms in addition to Android. The goal, OK Labs said, is to allow government workers to carry one phone. Some workers use two phones: one sanctioned by their employer for security reasons and another that the user chooses based on personal preferences.

For the OK Labs technology to work, OEMs must build software into the phones before they are shipped and then apps must be…………… continues on PCWorld

ASIAN mobile telecom giants Huawei and LG have launched new ultrafast smartphones in a race to catch market leaders Apple and Samsung.

China’s Huawei touted its new Ascend D as the “world’s fastest smartphone”, as it boasts a quad core processor, double that of other smartphones which are using dual core at the moment, making them at least twice as rapid.

“We are proud to … introduce a world first at the 2012 Mobile World Congress with the Ascend D quad, the fastest smartphone,” said Richard Yu, Huawei Device chairman, on the eve of the industry’s biggest fair in Barcelona.

“We’ve listened to people’s top demands from smartphones: speed, long battery life, high quality visual and audio capabilities and a compact lightweight handset,” said Yu, saying that the phone met those requirements.

Report: Mozilla to Introduce First Mozilla Phone by LG at MWC
News from Tom’s Guide:

Could a developer handset for Boot 2 Gecko go on sale as early as next week?

We already know that we’ll be hearing about the Mozilla Marketplace at Mobile World Congress, but last week we heard that Mozilla was also planning to reveal its partners for Boot 2 Gecko, the company’s mobile OS. Mozilla has been working on B2G for quite a while, and though Firefox will definitely benefit from the Mozilla Marketplace, it’s the company’s mobile operating system that will gain the most from the app store. But what’s an app store or an OS, without a phone? The latest rumors suggest that in addition to talking about the Mozilla Market place and Boot 2 Gecko, Mozilla will be unveiling a special LG device.

ExtremeTech cites a source that says Mozilla will be announcing that it has partnered up with LG to make a developer-oriented mobile device for B2G. The device is expected to go on sale sale next week, but considering B2G is still in its infancy and this is a developer handset, ExtremeTech estimates that it will be mid-2012 before the phone is usable. It’s possible that this could be just a part of the B2G partn…………… continues on Tom’s Guide

How Samsung Galaxy S3 Is Killing HTC One X & LG Optimus 4X HD’s MWC Debut
News from MotoringCrunch:

While all hopes were on the Samsung Galaxy S3 launching at MWC 2012, the Korean giant announced earlier this month that it would not be unveiling its flagship phone at the event and would be saving it for a later date.

Samsung Galaxy S3 rumors to cloud HTC One X & LG Optimus 4X HD MWC debut

Now as the Mobile World Congress event approaches, we are getting a taste of what is to come, in particular what the other reigning Android phone manufacturers have to offer – the HTC One X and the LG Optimus 4X HD.

Both the HTC One X and LG Optimus 4X HD look set to be the flagship Android smartphones for their respective brands and boast huge HD displays, quad-core processors and stellar camera sensors. So basically, they are model next-generation smartphones.

However this isn’t enough to stop consumers from wondering what the Samsung Galaxy S3 may have to offer. And in the case of the tech journalism community, while they may praise the HTC and LG devices, Samsung Galaxy S3 rumors will continue to cloud the stories given that the device is already being dubbed as the Android smartphone of the year.

Alas, no consumer waiting to get their hands on the best Android smartphone will make a move on these two devices until they get a glimpse of what the Galaxy S3 is all about. And that is likely when Samsung will unveil the device, the moment th…………… continues on MotoringCrunch

LG reportedly building first Boot2Gecko phone as Mozilla preps app store
News from Ars Technica:

Mozilla’s Web-centric Boot2Gecko (B2G) mobile platform is maturing at a rapid pace. As we reported earlier this month, the operating system has already attracted hardware partners and will be demoed at the upcoming Mobile World Congress event. Mozilla is also planning to unveil its new application storefront, called the Mozilla Marketplace, which will allow third-party developers to sell applications that are built with standards-based Web technologies.

A new report from ExtremeTech cites anonymous sources who say that LG is one of Mozilla’s hardware partners. The company is said to be working towards the launch of a developer-focused smartphone that will ship with an early version of the B2G operating system.

The initial developer product will give B2G contributors and application developers a real-world hardware environment for testing their work. Mozilla’s road-map indicates that B2G will be ready for actual consumers in the second half of 2012. At that point, it will compete with Android a…………… continues on Ars Technica

LG To Unveil Mozilla Phone At Mobile World Congress?

LG To Unveil Mozilla Phone At Mobile World Congress?
News from WebProNews:

There are rumors this morning that LG Mozilla may be about to unveil the first smartphone to run Mozilla’s Boot 2 Gecko operating system at the upcoming Mobile World Congress.

Citing “a source close to the matter” ExtremeTech says that the phone could be ready as early as next week, but that the Boot 2 Gecko OS probably won’t be ready for public consumption yet. There are no details yet on pricing or hardware, but the source says that the phone could be available as early as next week, though a mid-2012 date is more likely.

Boot 2 Gecko is a completely open-source mobile operating system designed to use entirely with web-based technology like HTML5 and Javascript. The system is built on the same Linux kernel as Android, though it is not based on Android itself. It relies on the same Gecko rendering engine that powers Firefox.

This rumor comes hot on the heels of Mozilla’s announcement that they would be opening the Mozilla Marketplace to developers at the Mobile World Congress. The Marketplace will host HTML5 web apps that will run in Firefox 13, coming this summer. A B2G-based smartphone…………… continues on WebProNews

LG Extravert (Verizon Wireless)
News from PC Magazine:

The LG Extravert ($ 79.99 direct) is an update to the LG Cosmos Touch (3 stars). It adds a better camera and video capture, while retaining a roomy physical QWERTY keyboard, though it still lacks 3G. It looks like a decent, though dated, option for users that need a simple cell phone with a keyboard for texting.

Slightly smaller than the Cosmos Touch, the Extravert measures 4.1 by 2.1 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.3 ounces. The 2.8-inch touch screen is on the small side, but features acceptable 400-by-240-pixel resolution. The phone slides open to reveal a four-row QWERTY keyboard with slightly raised membrane keys. Though we haven’t tested the Extravert, we were quite pleased with the keyboard on the Cosmos Touch.

The Extravert is a dual-band 1xRTT (850/1900 MHz) device with no 3G or Wi-Fi capability. It features a 2-megapixel camera with QVGA (320-by-240-pixel) video capture, though this phone is certainly no replacement for a digital camera. As far as extra features are concerned, the Extravert has a slow Myriad Web browser, along with an empty microSD card slot, expandable up to 32GB to store music, photos, and vid…………… continues on PC Magazine

SEOUL, Feb. 21, 2012 – LG Electronics (LG) makes its boldest move yet in its strategy to attain smartphone leadership with the launch of its new design identity, L-Style, at the 2012 Mobile World Congress (MWC).

The core essence of L-Style involves a timeless design with finer details that further differentiate LG’s mobile devices from the competition. LG Launches 5″ Optimus Vue To Rival Samsung Galaxy Note
News from TheUrbanTwist.com:

By Daniel Mbure on February 21, 2012 at 12:13 am |

Just when you were getting used to the Samsung Galaxy Note Frankenphone, another phone turns up with similar disproportionate measurements and further confusion on what to think of these “phablets”. LG has announced it will be launching a 5″ phone and it will go by the name Optimus Vue.

The phone, which comes barely months after Samsung launched its Galaxy Note, will sport a 5 inch TFT display with 16 million colours and have a display ratio of 1024-by-768, which is less than the Note’s 1280×800 display. This is however because the Note has a slightly bigger screen coming in at 5.3 inches.

This bizarre set of phones leaking into the market are pushing the boundaries of what was previously known as large screen phones. Consider the Galaxy Tab, which is in actual sense and fact a tablet, is only 2 inches larger than these two 5 inch phones.
