Consumer Cellular Adds 2ND Smartphone
News from Twice:

By Joseph Palenchar — TWICE, 1/30/2012

Portland, Ore. – Consumer Cellular, which targets the 50-plus age group with an unusual no-contract postpaid service, has launched its second smartphone as part of a planned smartphone expansion.

The MVNO launched the Android-based 3G LG Thrive at $ 90 plus a one-time $ 35 activation fee. It joins the company’s first smartphone, the 3G Motorola Bravo, whose price was just reduced to $ 140 plus $ 35 activation fee.

The Android-based Bravo, which was the company’s first 3G phone, was originally launched last year at $ 165.

In 2012, the company will make the switch to an all-3G lineup and expand its smartphone selection while it continues to expand beyond its direct-to-consumer roots by rolling out sales through online and brick-and-mortar retailers, CEO John Marick previously told TWICE.

The Thrive features a 3.2-inch touchscreen, Wi-Fi, 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera and camcorder, access to the Android Market for apps, and the preloaded subscribers-only My Consumer Cellular app, which lets users access billing and account information, usage stats and scan-capable AARP information for member benefits

Market promo pushes LG mobile sales up by 75 percent
News from BusinessDay:

LG electronics says it recorded 75 percent growth sales on its mobile phones in the last quarter of 2011 in the Nigerian market. The increase in sales of various brands of its mobile phones was induced by the market promo the company organised within November and December last year. The star prize of the promo was a four-day all expenses trip to Dubai for two couples.

The promo was a reward system to the company’s customers and a platform to allow its variants of mobile phones, which are not as popular as its television sets, to penetrate the Nigerian bourgeoning market.
Though the company did not disclose the exact income from the sales, but said that the Dubai trip attracted a lot of consumers, pan Nigeria. “Within the promotion, we accounted for more sales,” Bukola Arabome, marketing manager, LG Mobile, told BusinessDay.

At the promo draw  last week to determine various winners of 110 prizes on stake, Jimoh Akeem Ayodeji and Adeseye Debo won the trip to Dubai, while Olusegun Joan Ebun and Balarebe Lamido were among those that won 3D LG phone. Other prizes won included 42 inches television, fridges, microwave and other types of mobile phones.

To qualify for the promo, a customer had to buy LG mobile phone and got raffle ticket. Over the time, firms have offered concession to customers as a way of w…………… continues on BusinessDay

LG Spectrum Smartphone HD Screen Shines for Multimedia Consumption

LG Spectrum Smartphone HD Screen Shines for Multimedia Consumption
News from eWeek:

The LG Spectrum smartphone, available now from Verizon Wireless for $ 199.99 on contract, is the latest in a long line of multimedia-friendly Android handsets that flaunts large screens, big battery life and powerful application processing.

It’s quite possible, this Android 2.3 “Gingerbread” 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) smartphone, powered by Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S3 processor, might have the nicest, most crystal-clear screen yet seen on an Android handset.

That’s because this phone’s 4.5-inch, True HD IPS (in-plane switching) display, boasting 1280-by-720 resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio features the same display technology LG employs for its HD TVs.

Think of Spectrum as possessing an HD TV screen, only vastly scaled down to fit in the palm of the hand, which it does well at .40 inches thin. The display is also made of Corning’s Gorilla Glass, making it incredibly tough and scratch proof. See the phone’s full spe…………… continues on eWeek

LG Optimus L3 E400 budget Android 2.3 Gingerbread phone appears in Sweden
News from Recombu:

We’ve yet to hear anything about the LG Optimus 2 headed to the UK, but we might be getting the similarly-specced LG Optimus L3 aka the LG E400.

Available to pre-order now from CDON for the equivalent of £120 (converted from 1290 kr), the LG Optimus L3 has a 3.2-inch screen (320×240 pixels) a 3-megapixel camera (no flash) and comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Design-wise it looks a little like Nokia’s Lumia 800 with that curved metallic edge on the front and sides and a bit like the Samsung Galaxy Ace’s latticed pattern on the back.

Coming in black and white editions the LG Optimus L3 is expected in stock on the 27th of February. It looks like the white versions have already gone, but GSM Arena managed to swipe a few pics of the white version which we’ve included here.

We’d therefore expect to see this on LG’s stand at Mobile World Congress. As for word of a UK release, we’ve contacted LG and are waiting to hear back – stay tuned for an update.

HTC Amaze 4G, Sensation 4G, LG DoublePlay, myTouch And myTouch Q Nearing End …
News from TmoNews:

Here’s a bit of interesting news to keep us talking over the weekend as a new T-Mobile inventory screengrab has fallen into our inbox indicating the HTC Sensation 4G, HTC Amaze 4G, LG DoublePlay, LG myTouch Q and LG myTouch are nearing their end-of-life status. We should remind you that “end-of-life” does not mean the Amaze 4G will immediately disappear from store shelves — if anything there could be still be weeks worth of inventory sitting in T-Mobile warehouses. That being said, the idea that the top two HTC Android phones on T-Mobile are nearing the end of their run hopefully tells us something new is on the horizon. The HTC Ville perhaps?

As we look down the list at the LG handsets nearing end-of-life, we’re asking ourselves if anyone out there is terribly surprised that the myTouch and myTouch Q along with the…………… continues on TmoNews

LG: More than 1 million Optimus LTE phones sold
News from BGR:

By: Todd Haselton | Jan 26th, 2012 at 12:15AM

LG announced on Wednesday that it has sold more than 1 million Optimus LTE handsets. A version of the device landed in the United States as the Nitro HD on AT&T, although it’s unclear if that phone is figured into the count. “The combination of LTE connectivity with LG’s True HD IPS display has resonated with the public regarding the potential of LTE technology,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. LG said it sold 600,000 Optimus LTE units during the first three months the phone was available. The company also sold 8,500 units in Japan on the phone’s launch day. The Optimus LTE features a 4.5-inch 1280 x 720-pixel True HD IPS display, a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and an 8-megapixel camera. LG’s full press release follows after the break.

LG Spectrum (Verizon Wireless)

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

LG Spectrum (Verizon Wireless)
News from PC Magazine:

Samsung and HTC may lead in Android sales, but LG is intent on catching up—even at the high-end. The LG Spectrum ($ 199.99) offers everything you’d expect on a top-notch Verizon Wireless cell phone, including 4G LTE data speeds, a true high-definition (720p) display, and a powerful camera and 1080p camcorder. Our tests revealed a few significant flaws that weren’t immediately apparent given the Spectrum’s high-end specs, but it’s still a solid choice nonetheless.

Design, LTE, and Call Quality
Another big phone, the LG Spectrum is not as big as its peers. It measures 5.3 by 2.7 by 0.4 inches (HWD) and weighs five ounces; that’s an ounce lighter than the HTC Rezound ($ 199.99, 4 stars), but just a tenth of an ounce lighter than the Samsung Galaxy Nexus ($ 299.99, 4 stars). The shiny plastic rear cover looks a little flimsy, but the phone is lightweight for an LTE device, so it’s a reasonable trade-off. The 4.5-inch Gorilla Glass display is one of the Spectrum’s star features. It offers an ultra-sharp 720-by-1280-pixel r…………… continues on PC Magazine

LG’s Optimus 3D successor reported to be called the 3D Max
News from SlashGear:

The Optimus 3D phone didn’t gain a huge amount of traction but it did set an important milestone as a flagship glasses-free 3D handset. And LG is poised to push that legacy forward with a phone we knew now only by its code-name, the CX2. Now, according to a new report, it looks like the shelf name might be the 3D Max.

This would make it the first smartphone with the term “3D” at the front of its name. The insider information comes from Israeli website GSM-Israel, which has a solid track record of leaking details that are later proven true. Based on earlier information we’ve seen, the phone will have a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3-inch display, and a built-in 3D camera for still shots and video.

Of course, the tough part of selling a 3D phone right now is the lack of content. Sprint put out an aggressive campaign for its Evo 3D device that encouraged users to create their own content with the built-in 3D camera. Third-party app makers have been less enthusiastic, but perhaps at next month’s Mobile World Congress, where the 3D Max is expected to be fully unveiled, we’ll see advancements in this area.<…………… continues on SlashGear

LG Connect (MetroPCS)
News from CNET:

Editors’ note: As we currently have only a preproduction model of the Connect 4G, we are withholding an official CNET rating until we have a final model.

At CES this year, MetroPCS announced two new smartphones that will run on its 4G LTE network. One was the Samsung Galaxy Attain 4G, and the other was the more spec-robust, LG Connect 4G.

The LG Connect 4G is MetroPCS’ first dual-core handset, but that’s not the only reason why it’s tapped as the carrier’s shining star. It also has one of the brightest screens on the market–complete with 700 nits of NOVA glory.

Of course, being a MetroPCS phone does come with a few cons, since it isn’t the biggest, fastest, or most reliable network available in the United States. But it’s always great to see more higher-end options for consumers who want to stick to a no-contract, prepaid plan.

The phone will be available to retailers come February, and there’s still no word on its pricing. Although we managed to get our hands on a preproduction unit, be sure to stick around CNET once we snag a postproduction unit to fully evaluate.

Hands-on with the LG Optimus 3D (photos)

Scroll Left Scroll Right

BARCELONA, Spain–Yes, I’ve been pretty skeptical about the concept of a 3D cell phone. But to my surprise, the LG Optimus 3D actually delivers what it promises. It won’t be like watching 3D on the big screen–and frankly, there’s no reason that it should–but it offers an experience that you won’t see on another smartphone.

I just returned from LG’s insanely crowded booth at Mobile World Congress where I was able to play with the phone. Since you don’t need glasses to view videos or games on the handset, the 3D effect doesn’t have the familiar blue and red contrasting shapes that you’d see on standard 3D. Instead, images appear to float slightly off the screen. The effect is subtle, and difficult to capture with a still camera, but it’s definitely there. We had better luck seeing it in…………… continues on CNET

LG Optimus 3D 2 is a second stab at the third dimension
News from CNET:

by Luke Westaway January 24, 2012 10:23 AM PST

(Credit: Pocketnow)

Looks like LG is having another go at making a 3D phone. The follow-up to last year’s Optimus 3D has leaked online and is set to offer another round of glasses-free three-dimensional kicks.

Pocketnow has acquired leaked images of the new phone (reportedly code-named the CX2), as well as a selection of specs. The exciting news is that the Optimus 3D 2 will reportedly be able to convert 2D material into 3D before firing it out of its 4.3-inch display, and into your eyes.

We have to admit, when we’ve seen 2D-to-3D conversion before (in 3D televisions, for example), it’s never wound up looking particularly good. We’ll reserve judgement until we’ve laid eyes on this phone for ourselves though.

Images and specs of a new LG phone codenamed the “CX2″ were recently leaked. The phone is thought to possibly be the successor to the Optimus 3D and may be unveiled during the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona next month. Pocketnow, which leaked the image and specs, says the CX2 sports a dual-core Texas Instruments processor clocked at 1.2GHz, a NOVA display capable of displaying 3D content, a 5-megapixel camera capable of snapping 3D photos, 8GB of storage, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC and support for 21Mbps HSPA+ networks. The phone could launch as soon as this spring, but unfortunately the phone is said to run on Google’s older Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system rather than Ice Cream Sandwich.
