VMware’s virtualized Android phones coming to Verizon

VMware’s virtualized Android phones coming to Verizon
News from Ars Technica:

VMware’s project to bring virtualization technology to Android smartphones has locked up a major carrier partner in Verizon Wireless, which will start selling virtualized phones “in the coming months,” VMware announced today.

The technology, known as VMware Horizon Mobile, essentially creates two phones on the same device by installing a guest operating system in a virtual machine, resulting in a work environment that is isolated from a user’s personal environment, applications and data. LG and Samsung have both agreed to build phones containing VMware’s mobile hypervisor.

In addition to Verizon, VMware today said it has signed up Telefonica to sell virtualized phones in Europe, including the Samsung Galaxy SII. The Verizon announcement names LG as a hardware partner, but both Verizon and Telefonica will release devices from multiple Android ve…………… continues on Ars Technica

LG DoublePlay Phone Touts Two Screens for Multitasking Fiends

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

LG DoublePlay Phone Touts Two Screens for Multitasking Fiends
News from Wired News:

We 21st century humans are busy creatures. Bombarded by a constant stream of data flowing into our smartphones, we struggle to respond to text messages, tweets and e-mails in a timely fashion. But LG’s latest smartphone, exclusive to T-Mobile, may provide a solution.

Dubbed the DoublePlay, the handset boasts a 3.5-inch touchscreen display for viewing content, and a slide-out qwerty keyboard that should appeal to the dwindling numbers of BlackBerry faithfuls among us. And, in a strange twist of industrial design, the DoublePlay also comes with another 2-inch touchscreen that splits the keyboard in twain, and serves as a second app dock for fast task-switching.

At first glance, the second screen seems like sheer novelty. T-Mobile pitches the dubious idea that the additional screen is perfect for the world of “fast-paced social networking.” I can’t say I’ve ever been struc…………… continues on Wired News

LG DoublePlay Android Phone Sports Dual Screens

Monday, October 17th, 2011

LG DoublePlay Android Phone Sports Dual Screens
News from eWeek:

People might believe dual-screen phones are novelties, but apparently some folks want them enough to prompt Android OEMs to keep making them.

T-Mobile Oct. 17 said it will begin selling the Android 2.3 Gingerbread-based LG DoublePlay smartphone this holiday season, offering a handset with a 3.5-inch main display, under which sits a 2-inch sub-display.

Each screen can work together to provide larger screen real estate for users, or separately to allow users to multitask, including checking email on one screen and playing Angry Birds or other games on the other.

In that regard, the DoublePlay’s dual screens recall Sprint’s Kyocera Echo. That Gingerbread  phone that sports two 3.5-inch WVGA capacitive touchscreens (capable of operating independently or together.

New LG phone loaded
News from Louisville Courier-Journal:

LG showed off its new LG Marquee to the media recently. The slick-looking smartphone, available on the Sprint Network, is loaded with features.

It weighs just 3.95 ounces, has a .36-inch thick body along with a very responsive and impressive looking 4-inch glass Nova touch screen display.

While my demonstration of the phone was inside, company representatives assured me that since it’s built with the LG Nova technology, the screen will adjust for viewing in any light, including bright sunshine.

A 1-GHz single-core processor and Android 2.3.4 run the Marquee, which includes a 2-megapixel front camera and 5-megapixel back camera. The back is equipped with a flash.

Inside is a microSD card slot (2GB card included) for unlimited expandable memory to store photos, videos or music. Cards up to 32GB can be purchased separately.

Other features include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a 1500mAH battery good for about 5.5…………… continues on Louisville Courier-Journal

LG Esteem (MetroPCS)

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

LG Esteem (MetroPCS)
News from CNET:

MetroPCS will forever hold the distinction of being the first to offer the U.S. an LTE market and phone 11 months ago, but it’s also been the slowest in developing a 4G portfolio. The LG Esteem represents the carrier’s second LTE smartphone since MetroPCS first launched the Samsung Galaxy Indulge.

Unlike the Galaxy Indulge, the Esteem no slide-out keyboard to accompany its all-touch screen. It’s thick, solid, and square as a brick, but it’s also MetroPCS’ best smartphone to date. The large, vibrant touch screen, the dual cameras, and the faster processor all add to the appeal, but there’s a major sticking point that keeps the Esteem from reaching its potential: its abysmal battery life.

There are some other perks as well: the HDMI-out port, for one, and the 720p HD…………… continues on CNET

LG introduces first 720p 4G LTE phone
News from Digitaltrends.com:

LG has matched Apple’s Retina Display and upped it by an inch. The new Optimus LTE boasts a 4.5-inch 720p screen. Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus already has competition.

Apple’s retina display will have some competition this holiday season. Today, LG unveiled a new Android phone with 4G LTE connectivity and its new superbright “NOVA” display, which achieves a low-end HD resolution of 720p (1280×720 pixels). At 4.5 inches, the IPS LCD screen has a 16:9 aspect  and more pixels per inch than Apple’s famed Retina Display for the iPhone 4 and 4S. LG’s display gets 329ppi over 4.5 inches, while Apple’s achieves 326ppi over 3.5 inches. Unfortunately, the phone is currently only set for launch in South Korea.

LG unveils 4G phone

Monday, October 10th, 2011

LG unveils 4G phone
News from Stuff.co.nz:

LG Electronics, the world’s No3 handset maker, on Monday launched a new smartphone that runs on South Korea’s fast, fourth-generation network, in the company’s latest attempt to rescue its loss-making handset business.

The Optimus LTE will square off against Samsung Electronics Co’s 4G version of its flagship Galaxy S model and Apple’s new iPhone, which runs on standard 3G network, during the key year-end holiday season.

The high-end model comes after LG suffered five consecutive quarterly losses from handset sales and is set to report a wider loss for the September quarter later this month due to a lack of attractive high-end models.

LG has been slower than its bigger rivals to refocus on smartphones, and its smaller scale has held it back from profiting from rising demand for cheaper phones.

The firm now hopes its early move to the 4G segment can help revive its fortunes.

“Optimus LTE is our ambitious product that mobilizes our LTE and display te…………… continues on Stuff.co.nz

HTC Titan review – This Is My Next
News from HTC Titan review – This Is My Next:

The HTC Titan is exactly the sort of Windows Phone Microsoft wants to see from its hardware partners. It’s a big and beautiful slab of technology that invites great debate while still conforming to the chassis specs coming out of Redmond. The main question stirred up by the arrival of the 4.7-inch Titan is, inevitably, how big is too big? Ever since HTC’s own HD2 established 4.3 inches as a viable form factor for smartphones, that’s been considered a sort of ceiling for comfortable use, but this year Samsung has strayed beyond it with the 4.5-inch Infuse and
