LG Optimus Sol ‘affordable 1 GHz Android’ finally unveiled

LG Optimus Sol ‘affordable 1 GHz Android’ finally unveiled
News from TechRadar UK:

LG has finally taken the wraps off its poorly-hidden Optimus Sol, complete with Android 2.3.

If the news of the Korean giant actually managing to bring a handset to market with the latest version of Android isn’t enough to get you busting out the early morning bubbly (we know you all have it) then get this: it’s got an OLED screen too.

That’s right – LG has finally brought a phone out using the next-gen screen technology, despite proclaiming less than a month ago that “OLED displays are not suitable in terms of picture quality, response time, energy consumption and contrast ratios”.

Anyway – onto the good stuff: the LG Optimus Sol is being touted as one of the cheapest phones with 1GHz processor around, so it will be interesting to see how much it will cost when its gets its September UK release date.

ET Review: LG Optimus 3D P920 with eye-popping visuals
News from Economic Times:
NEW DELHI: For some people, 3D is just a gimmick that is worth little more than the odd look. It definitely has no place on a mobile phone. LG, however, thinks differently. The new Optimus 3D is not really the first 3D phone – the Spice M-67 offered 3D without glasses almost a year ago -but it certainly is the most muscular handheld device we have seen offering 3D. It is bulky (11.9mm thick) and at a hefty 168 grams, is not the lightest phone in town. Although built mainly of plastic, it feels solid to hold.

The front is dominated by the large 4.3 inch display with four touch keys for menu, home, back and search. On the left side are HDMI and micro USB ports and on the right is the volume rocker and a key which many might assume is a camera key, but is actually the key that lets in the 3D magic. A 3.5 mm audio jack and the screen/power on-off button are on the top of the phone. On the back is the dual 5.0-megapixel camera module with a single LED flash.

Hit that 3D button and y…………… continues on Economic Times

LG rejected Android pole position insider reveals
News from SlashGear:

LG, not HTC, was to be Google’s original partner on the first commercial Android smartphone, according to the latest industry rumors, with Android chief Andy Rubin being forced to turn to the then-little-known Taiwanese firm after LG backed out of the deal. Although negotiations had begun in early 2007 for hardware partners, a source tells the WSJ, first-choice LG opted out midway through the year leaving HTC to pick up the reins. It’s a decision which hindsight suggests did LG no favors, given HTC subsequently rode Android to its current prominence.

Although no reason for LG’s decision not to continue with Google on the Android project is given, the company’s existing touchscreen cellphone plans are …………… continues on SlashGear

Tethering a Windows Phone from LG

Friday, August 19th, 2011

Tethering a Windows Phone from LG
News from DeviceMAG:

As you may know if you have been following these guides on Windows Phone 7, tethering was not specified as a feature by Microsoft when the initial device partners LG, Samsung, HTC and Dell first came on board. The result of this is that only a few of the phones natively offer tethering, although this function is hidden from view.

Exactly why Microsoft disabled tethering is not known although it is likely this was either an oversight, a feature Microsoft intended to trumpet later on or simply to appease the big mobile phone companies such as AT&T. Thanks to having several device manufacturers, however, tethering has slipped in to some phone models.

Fortunately it is possible to tether the LG Windows Phones, as explained below.

Getting Started Tethering Your LG Windows Phone

Before we get started with this, you will need to make sure that you have the LG USB Modem drivers. These should be available from the LG website, but you will also find t…………… continues on DeviceMAG

Did LG save Android before it began?

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Did LG save Android before it began?
News from TechRadar UK:

The name LG could have been as synonymous with Google’s OS as HTC, according to an article on Android founder Andy Rubin.

The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) has published a look at the rise of the operating system – and the most interesting fact claimed is that LG backed out of a deal to be the primary partner for Android in 2007.

HTC brought the first three Android phones to market and now enjoys a status as one of the world’s largest smartphone makers, whereas LG is struggling to make waves in the same industry.

It’s an interesting point of conjecture – did LG lose out, or did Google and Android really win big by not having the Korean firm as a primary partner?

I’d have to go with the latter – we’ve seen LG’s propensity to make sub-par phones when it comes to user interfaces (S-Class’ spinning cube UI combined with a resistive touchscreen was never goin…………… continues on TechRadar UK

LG Thrill 4G review

LG Thrill 4G review
News from BGR:

The Thrill 4G is the second Android smartphone in the United States capable of recording and displaying 3D video and photos without the need for special glasses. We first saw the phone during CTIA earlier this year and, after delays, it will launch soon on AT&T for $ 99.99. I spent the better part of the last three weeks carrying the LG Thrill 4G everywhere I went. Are the 3D effects useful and fun or are they just a lame gimmick? Does the “4G” in its name equate to faster data speeds or does it surf on a par with 3G phones? All of this and more is answered in my review, so hit the read link to get started.

Hardware

The LG Thrill 4G is identical to its European cousin, the LG Optimus 3D, in nearly every way. It’s equipped with a 4.3-inch 800 x 480-pixel scree…………… continues on BGR

Asian Phone Makers May Turn to Rival OS in Wake of Google-Motorola Deal
News from Mobiledia:

By Kat Asharya | Tue Aug 16, 2011 4:25 pm

Phone makers such as HTC, LG and Samsung have staked a claim in the mobile market on the basis that they sell phones running Google’s open-source Android platform.

The result is a group of manufacturers that helped propel Android into a dominant mobile OS. Android held a 44 percent share of the smartphone market at the end of the second quarter, according to data from research firm Gartner, ahead of Nokia’s 22 percent and Apple’s 18 percent.

But Google’s acquisition of Motorola, also a major Android manufacturer, may disrupt the Android market by conferring an advantage to the device manufacturer, despite Google’s stated intention to keep Motorola running as a separate company.

“The deal will make most Android players realize how depend…………… continues on Mobiledia

Google’s Motorola Play Could Alienate Android Teammates

Google’s Motorola Play Could Alienate Android Teammates
News from Wired News:

Google must work hard to convince its partner manufacturers that its new relationship with Motorola will not compromise its others. Photo: Jon Snyder/Wired.com

Google’s always been happy to stay in the software business, which has suited gadget companies just fine. They’ve all benefited from Google’s willingness to license Android to anyone. But today’s announcement that the tech titan plans to acquire Motorola Mobility Holdings will make them wonder if Google is about to start playing favorites.

A lot of companies — HTC chief among them — have profited nicely with handsets running Google’s free Android operating system. But the news that Google is getting into the hardware business won’t win it any points …………… continues on Wired News

AT&T LG Thrill delayed again; Launch pushed back to September 4
News from Droid Matters:

The launch of the LG’s 3D phone on AT&T, the LG Thrill, has been delayed, again. According to leaked documents on Android Central, the launch of LG’s 3D phone has been pushed back to September 4. This isn’t the first time the Thrill’s launch has been delayed.

The 3D phone was first speculated for an August 7 launch, based on data from RadioShack’s internal systems. The date was then pushed back to August 21, and now September 7.

Since AT&T or LG never officially announced a launch date for the phone, there’s a possibility that more delays could be on the way. The only la…………… continues on Droid Matters

Smartphone review: LG Optimus 3D

Smartphone review: LG Optimus 3D
News from Times of India:
The world’s first, and the most anticipated, glass-less 3D phone hits Indian stores by the end of this month.

Let’s get it out of the way at the very outset – I am not a fan of 3D. Yes, I do like watching 3D movies every now and then, but I refuse to believe the pundits who aver that 3D is the future. The biggest problem with viewing 3D is that you have to wear special glasses. This is fine for around an hour or two in a cinema hall, but quite an annoyance over extended periods of time. Besides, if you already wear prescription glasses, it’s quite a balancing act keeping the 3D ones on.

Some manufacturers-most notably Nintendo with its 3DS gaming console have done away with glasses by using ‘auto stereoscopic screens’ which give you the impression of action happening on and in front of the display, although this works only from a specific viewing angle. But even this has met with limited success. India’s first 3D p…………… continues on Times of India

3-D Video Reaches Out To Grab Consumers

3-D Video Reaches Out To Grab Consumers
News from InformationWeek:

YouTube has witnessed a steady uptick in 3-D uploads since HTC’s EVO 3D phone hit the market. Soon LG’s Thrill will join the 3-D party. This might not necessarily spawn a 3-D Hollywood shot-by-cellphone revolution, but putting 3-D technology into the hands of consumers certainly can’t hurt. Besides, even without the 3-D part, these phones are both worth having.

In the first part of this story, I talked about the impact of 3-D phones on 3-D adoption. Here, we’ll dive a bit deeper into the phones, but don’t mistake this for a full review of either phone. For that, check out the HTC EVO 3D review here.

The HTC EVO 3D started shipping in late June, and it’s available on Sprint’s WiMax (4G) network for $ 199.99 with a two-year contract. It is a 4.3-inch qHD 3-D phone, powered by Qualcomm’s 1.2GZ Snapdrag…………… continues on InformationWeek
