LG Optimus 3D review: Is the world’s first 3D smartphone worth the fuss?

Review by
Ross Catanzariti
PC World Australia (online) 19 / 07 / 11

Bottom Line:

The world’s first 3D smartphone, the appropriately-named LG Optimus 3D, is limited in its use, with the 3D camera and 3D gaming the main highlights. The 3D concept itself is well integrated, but the Optimus 3D has mediocre battery life, and its chunky design is a turn off, making it difficult to recommend.

LG Optimus Black P970 phone review
News from Wired.co.uk:

LG might have been first out of the blocks with a dual core handset, and first to launch a phone with a 3D screen in the UK. But while those phones hit the headlines, the real money’s to be had from good quality midrange phones, like the Optimus Black, which makes do with a single-core processor and 2D screen, but still manages to pack a good range of features into its stylishly slim body.

And that slim body is pretty too, measuring a svelte 9.2mm thick and clad in, er, black, unsurprisingly, from top to toe. The entire front is covered by a smooth sheet of glass with the usual four Android buttons lining up beneath the screen on a touch sensitive strip. There’s a power/sleep button with microUSB port and 3.5mm headphone jack on top and a volume rocker and gesture control button on the side.

This latter of the above allows you to make use of the phone’s motion sensor for a variety…………… continues on Wired.co.uk

Preview: Google+ Mobile
News from InformationWeek:

BYTE — It’s bad form to roll out a new service without some kind of mobile app available. As expected, Google rolled out a mobile app with its beta of the Google+ social network — an app for the Android platform. BYTE took a long look.

Google was wise to launch this app along with its limited-use service. The service will need debugging from every direction before a mass rollout. I tried out the Android application on two different phones–a stock LG Optimus T running Android 2.2 and a rooted Motorola Cliq XT running CyanogenMod 7.0.3 (Android 2.3.3).

Excepting an issue with photos I’ll discuss below, the app ran smoothly on both phones. Here’s the main menu for the Google + app for Android. It’s clean and simple.

On launch, the app presents your choice of Stream, Huddle, Photos, Circles or User Profile — each selectable via a large icon.

The Stream view is a miniaturized version of the full website. Here you find tools at top for adding a…………… continues on InformationWeek

News from PopHerald.com:

LG offering Gingerbread smartphones? Wow!

Korean-based company LG announces two new Android devices, and surprisingly, the devices are packed with Gingerbread.

While the T-Mobile G2x and LG Optimus 2x communities are still waiting for LG’s Gingerbread updates, the company announces two new smartphones packed with the latest Android build, Gingerbread. One phone features a physical landscape QWERTY keyboard, while the other one is full touchscreen.

According to LG Mobile’s press release, the LG Optimus Pro that is sporting a form like a BlackBerry smartphone, features a 2.8 inches screen with 240 x 320 pixels, single-core 800 MHz processor, and will include Android Gingerbread 2.3.3 out of the box. LG Announces Two New Android Gingerbread Phones: Optimus Pro, and Optimus Net

LG Announces Two New Android Gingerbread Phones: Optimus Pro, and Optimus Net
News from TechCrunch:

It seems like some time in the last 5 months or so, all of the major Android handset makers had the same idea: they, too, needed a BlackBerry-esque QWERTY candybar handset. It’s as if RIM’s self-fueled fiery demise made them realize that BlackBerry owners might be abandoning ship soon, so they adopted a form factor that would make the transition to Android that much smoother.

While Motorola had the Droid Pro way back in Q3 of last year, Samsung joined the keyboarded-slab party just back in March with the Galaxy Pro. HTC announced their first Android QWERTY candybar, the lawsuit triggering ChaCha, back in February and will launch it in the US (as the AT&T Status) this weekend.

The latest OEM to board the ol’ Android-QWERTY-Candybar Express: LG. This morning, they’re debuting two brand new pieces of hardware, both running Android v2.3 (Gingerbread).

First up — the Optimus P…………… continues on TechCrunch

LG brings forth two new Android phones

LG brings forth two new Android phones
News from Daily News Engine:

Sometime in the last five months, mobile phone developers everywhere had the same idea and came to the conclusion they needed a phone that resembled a Blackberry and was created with the QWERTY candybar form factor. Perhaps, all these developers believed that Blackberry owners might want to change something and look in a different direction, therefore they wanted to make the transition to Android as smooth as possible. Motorola was the first one to start the trend, in 2010’s third quarter, designing the Droid Pro. Samsung followed a few months afterward bringing forth its Galaxy Pro and even HTC decided to launch its first QWERTY candybar, the HTC Chacha, which will hit US stores this weekend.

The latest company to board the Android Qwerty candybar train is LG. They have decided to launch two new smartphones, the Optimus Pro and the Optimus Net that will both run on Android 2.3. First of the two, the Optimus Pro is clearly LG’s attempt to bring forth something old Blackberry …………… continues on Daily News Engine

LG Optimus 3D mobile phone review

LG Optimus 3D mobile phone review
News from Wired.co.uk:

The LG Optimus 3D is a beast. That’s normally meant as a compliment, but in reality, being a beast is a bit of a double-edged sword. Sure, you’re big and powerful — enough to rip your shirt open at the slightest provocation, at the very least. But you’re also more than a little ugly and difficult to get on with. Don’t believe the fairytales about the beast going off with the princess after she’s discovered he has a heart of gold. Girls are far more fickle than that.

Ahem. We were talking about the LG Optimus 3D, weren’t we? Let’s start with that all-consuming power. The Optimus 3D has a dual-core 1GHz processor, which is more than capable of most tasks that you throw at it, including 3D 720p video capture. It has 8GB of internal storage, a SD card slot for expanding that further, and all the usual HSDPA, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity options.

The display is pretty impressive too — a …………… continues on Wired.co.uk

LG Thrill 3D 4G Release Date, Specs Revealed

LG Thrill 3D 4G Release Date, Specs Revealed
News from Video Gaming Pros:

It seems only a month or so ago the HTC EVO 3D 4G Sprint phone was the first-ever and only phone with 3D technology to grace a smartphone without the need of glasses. Well, it will always be the first ever, but it is alone no more. Consumer electronics, computer and phone manufacturer LG is about to release their LG Thrill 3D AT&T 4G smartphone, and it will join the Evo 3D 4G as the only two mobile phones to ever offer 3D without using glasses.

A recent picture of some LG and AT&T Thrill informational sheets sent to AT&T retailers lists a release date of July, with no further clarification. Far from ambiguous, this is a great announcement. Just last month, LG and AT&T were exclaiming “sometime this summer” as a debut for the Thrill, so with only 2 weeks left in July, this is a good sign.

The Thrill 4G is also called the LG Optimus 3D in other parts of the world, a…………… continues on Video Gaming Pros

Motorola Droid X2 Review
News from Digitaltrends.com:

In almost every respect, Motorola’s Droid X2 a better phone than the Droid X, which we gave high marks to one year ago. It has double the processing power, a better camera, and a higher resolution qHD display. However, the world of Android changes quickly. What is impressive one day is out of date the next. Motorola’s Droid has some great attributes and is not a bad phone, but in a few key ways, the device isn’t keeping up with the features and performance of its competitors. Let’s dig in.

Design

From a design perspective, nothing has changed between the Droid X and X2, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The original Droid X was thinner and larger than almost anything on the market. While the X2 doesn’t break new ground in size or thinness, it still…………… continues on Digitaltrends.com

Microsoft Baidu Deal, Android Royalties Marked Week

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

Microsoft Baidu Deal, Android Royalties Marked Week
News from eWeek:

Microsoft continued its Android march this week, with a report that the company plans on demanding $ 15 from Samsung for each Android smartphone produced by the manufacturer.

That information apparently came from unnamed industry officials speaking to the Seoul-based Maeil Business Newspaper, and found its way into a July 6 Reuters report. Were Samsung to enter some sort of royalties deal, it would become the latest in an increasingly long string of companies paying Microsoft an “Android tax.” Microsoft insists that Google’s Android platform violates a variety of patents it holds.

So far, most of those companies have been small: Wistron Corp., Onkyo Corp., Velocity Micro and General Dynamics Itronix have all agreed within the past 10 days to a royalty agreement. However, both Amazon and HTC pay Microsoft, suggesting that some big enterprises are also in Microsoft’…………… continues on eWeek

LG Optimus 3D: Fun, Powerful, and a Little Gimmicky

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

LG Optimus 3D: Fun, Powerful, and a Little Gimmicky
News from PCWorld:

One of the most buzzed-about phones at Mobile World Congress was the LG Optimus 3D, the first mainstream phone to rock a 3D display. On top of that, the Optimus has a slick design, a dual-core processor, and a 3D camera/camcorder. We were disappointed when LG announced that the Optimus 3D was neither a 4G phone nor destined for the United States. Imagine our joy, however, when we found out at CTIA that it would be rebranded for AT&T’s HSPA+ network as the LG Thrill 4G. The Thrill 4G isn’t available yet, but LG sent us an Optimus 3D review unit as sort of a preview of what’s to come.

LG Optimus 3D: The 3G phone that saves on specs
News from Mirror.co.uk:

LG Optimus 3D

Price dependent on contract ★★★

Following in the wake of Nintendo’s 3DS comes the first mobile phone with a glasses-free 3D display.

Relatively chunky when compared to Samsung’s Galaxy S2, the Optimus 3D sports a massive 4.3-inch parallax barrier-covered display.

Pressing a dedicated button brings up the phone’s three dimensional options, namely games, video and 3D options for the dual lens camera.

The screen’s 3D effect does work reasonably well – there’s not a great deal of crosstalk or ghosting, which is so often a problem with 3D displays –…………… continues on Mirror.co.uk
